I like the Salt Lizard's little dig on Roger here. "You had a great time playing the troll and making Alderode hate you. But if you want victory, you'll have to trade away everything you are - and you won't get to enjoy the prize."

Roger doesn't seem too keen on that, understandably. It's one thing to die unintended in the heat of battle. It's another to march coldly towards a certain and terrible death. It's no wonder Salty waited to tell him the final step of this scheme until it was too late for him to walk away. She's more cunning than she looks.

She doesn't seem overly upset to be telling him about it, either.

I can't pinpoint exactly why the fact that Roger knew all too well what his fate would be upon agreeing to be Ruck's human popsicle has made me about ten times more upset about it than I was originally, but here I am.

She promised to help. She did not promise the help to be kind or nice. Also, bye-byeeee firewall~. Time to see the Etalarche in action.

I'm starting to see a motif with your characters that are, let's say, of a revolutionary mindset. I'm going to think this out some more and then present you with what is probably a fairly complex and intrusive question about said motif, but I also think we need to see more of Roger's story so I can tell whether or not my interpretation of how the narrative is presenting him is accurate.

Unrelated: garbage legacy code plagues information security wherever I go! I can't even get away from it in my fantasy webcomics! And it's always some high-level non-tech asshole nobody can say no to implementing it! I'm willing to pay for an AU fan-comic drawn by someone else where the Tainish Wrights of Yore, who were developing the security standards, decide to pull a Senate-on-Caesar moment on the King of the Rotidians when he tried to fuck up the code base forever.

Play stupid games win stupid prizes, Roger.
