Elka's got a pretty tough skull and skeleton thanks to a fancy pymaric implant that makes them extra hard or extra flexible, as needed. Wouldn't it be great if, before they joined the military, you could make your kid get some kind of device installed that you knew would up their chances of survival? Little qualify-of-life niceties like this are why fantasy is my favourite genre.
