You kind of expect someone to reply: "That's some conspiracy dogshit, Ald! What in the hell are you talking about? We don't do THAT. You're totally out of line!"

Ah, but no, that's kind of how it goes, even if Duane's put the sacrifice in terms a little harsher than "Sending a twin to the gods."

Ever since we arrived at the shrine I've played with the established shifting of Duane's sanity and coherence. Since it's always dark in the shrine due to the storm, it can be hard to know for sure if Duane is himself or if Duane's the nighttime monster. We want him to be his monstrous self when he acts so cruel and bigoted and atrocious. We don't want that to be our hero. But the fact is these outbursts and this insecurity are facets of his personality, and not the fault of a slavering zombie.

And that sucks, man.It also sucks that the Gefendur faith is a lot darker than feuding celestial twin sisters and skull decor. It's hard to know who to even want to get behind. It would be nice if our representative from an alternative faith could be a little more civil and charitable to these ostensible victims, but he's not making much of a case to more sceptical kids like Siya by shouting at them.

It's all a bit of a mess.

I was thinking the unfinished faces means he saw the children as something less than him in a more negative context, but he preaches that they are victims of false religion. Is this like a savior of lesser beings context?

SET

Duane seems a little more back to his senses now that he seized the reigns back from sette; and the commentary in this post is so insightful, love it!

“It’s a bit of a mess” is a fair description of the human condition. We can want puppy dogs and fairy godmothers all day, but that ain’t how it is. And you never forget that in your writing. Ah, Miz Cope, you continue to astound, even as you dismay…

The Clag

I love angry passionate somewhat unhinged daddy Duane.

Also I still say Yerta's got a good PR agent. I dunno if the story will ever go there, but I'm willing to bet what went down with Tirna wasn't like the story the Gefender believe. I'll put a dollar on it.

Probably not going to be making myself any friends by saying this, but I don't think Duane is doing anything wrong. Imagine if, during the Gilded Age, Rockefeller was offering poor families $1,000 to eat their children. We wouldn't be going "aw man that sucks, but those families really need that money". No! We'd be saying Rockefeller needs to be held accountable for this crimes. This temple and its ritual is a testament to the depravity of the ruling class, and it should be burned to the ground. Duane isn't an asshole, he's a revolutionary! These children should be saved - against their will if need be - and he has every right to be beside himself with anger. Even without the mind control, that he's been as calm as he has, this far, is commendable. It's time for him to stop humoring this depraved play, even if he has to become hated to do it.

A part of me envisions Duane suddenly having the voice of Cave Johnson. ‘When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade! Get mad! What the heck am I gonna do with these! I’m gonna use these lemons to make a weapon that’ll burn your house down!’

PS: the horrid pageant director's ability to detach from her personal freak-out enough to appreciate the lightshow is the thing she's said that makes me like her most :) My holy vision is toast, but still, awesome leaping green lions!

This isn't a Revelation. We all knew this was in Duane. And after he told the story of his brother and the salt lizard,he was becoming reflective enough to possibly grow,But the lady stopped him. She turned him from that growth deliberately. Frankly I'm surprised at anyone who is surprised at Duane here. But Maybe no one is, and it's just the explanation with this post that made me think people had been upset by it. As a long reader rather than a post-by-post reader, I wonder if I wouldn't profit more by reading it on the site. I'm not sure. I really do want to be part of the community.
