Two pages today! Quigley just calling Duane out on his bullshit. It's satisfying to see, even if the messenger isn't exactly a paragon of personal honesty either.

Duane's terrible line about the children dying shifts immediately - to my ear - into propaganda speech. It's a rote line and he's repeating it. Do you think he actually believes it? Or is this the sort of thing he's been telling himself ever since he watched all those young people die during the Foi-Hellick Affair? Where's the crime? Anything unfortunate that happens to these shrine girls - where's the crime?

The Clag

He may be right but I won't hate him any less for it. One night of drunken fatherly effort does not excuse a life of destructive selfishness Quigley.

i do think he believes it! it's not a matter of if but when you will start believing a lie when its told over and over ,especially to justify something

God damn do these pages have atmosphere! Or something, idk, but I've been really Feeling these last several pages more so than anything before it! Its like this comic is just constantly getting better!

Don't let your guard down Duane. He's a dirty player.

I feel like there's symbolism hiding the the backgrounds here. Like the whole plot is spelled out here in secret corners that I can't quite see into

The Apprentice

That was a really satisfying sequence.

Chase

Good to see that even though Duane's having a very bad day, he's still as graceful as ever, that kick was awfully impressive.

Quigley realizing he’s been fighting his own reflection, though. And then that expression. 🤣

Duane simply throws all Crescians in the same pot. In his mind, all Crescians are responsible for every crime by some Crescian he ever had to suffer under. Anyone up for #NotAllCrescians? No? Thought so.

There is no therapy for a child who has been through something like this. Matty has this ugly betrayal planted in his gut, and it will be there forever. On the other hand, this is Matty...

I mean... I've kinda felt a little lonely being sympathetic to Duane in these past few pages (which is a change now from feeling a little alone in feeling Quigley is reasonably sympathetic despite his flaws). Duane is not in his right mind right now. In some ways he seems barely able to tell reality from fantasy (like when he asserted that the girl had been beaten when he knew better). He's literally had his mind jerked around like a puppet on a string and forced into a situation he'd never have agreed to. It's an awful lot to handle on top of the literally inhuman things he normally has to handle. I mean, yeah, this ugliness is inside him and this has let it come out. That's true. But given his history, where he came from, and most importantly what was done to him and his daughter... I dunno, I just think it's to his credit that it took this incredibly stressful situation to push him to this point. Most of us are quite capable of demonising and dehumanising people for very much less then what Duane has personally experienced (or thinks he has experienced) at the hands of Cresce and its queen.

If he really believed it, he'd do it. And he'd be lost.
