Plot twist: Duane exists and is alive. He did recover well that fateful night and was healed. It's just that our second favourite villain (the favourite being obviously a certain gifted Crescian wright) took a blue print of his brain and chucked that into some random Soud guy who happened to die that night. The first days of Duane's plod memories are fake, they start correctly from Sharteshane on.

Unrelated, sorry, but it just crossed my mind. Probably not the first to have this idea either, nah: I think Narys actually an okay dad to Sette. The whole mission was indeed to test her, but not her obedience. Indeed it's a test of her resolve and her bravery to make her own decisions and follow her heart. Because brownnoses are a dime a dozen. Nary doesn't want Sette to follow his orders - if she's gonna be boss one day, she gotta do her own thing instead of trying to please him. So she did right in Narys eyes. At least that's what I like to think.
