In case you were wondering why he's been so bizarrely quiet for the last two-hundred pages about this world-shattering plot twist - 3/10, Duane wasn't a fan of it. Really an example of that old adage: "There are two tragedies in life—not getting what you want, and getting it."

A crappy sentiment maybe, but I can sympathise too. We only know people as deeply as we perceive them; it's ultimately a reflection we carry around in our heads, some more accurate than others. Mikaila has strayed awfully far from memory. (And to an objectively troubling new self at that.)

Its weird but I get it, one pillar he's had in this horrible strange new unlife of his has been grieving for his slain daughter. Now that is not true! It would be... off putting, to say the least, to have that pillar knocked out.

Even without the confounding issues of deaths that weren’t, too many years of mourning both ways, and Duane’s horrendous form, many parents can never accept that their teenage/adult children are not the paragons they imagined them to be as young children. They tend to blame anyone other than themselves or their “perfect” child for the discord , so I expect Duane will blame his brother.

I definitely get why he's bummed out about it. Mikaila being alive is a complication. Things were very simple when he was deluding himself that God cursed him for his failures and the silver is his path to redemption. Life for Duane has been attacking that delusion with a sledgehammer for the past few weeks, and now he's left with nothing. I can't see it being very pleasant :(
