First a fun fact, Maomao's name is written 猫猫, or Catcat. It is absolutely intentional and I love it. Second, about the setting. There are a lot of things the anime doesn't outright state, as (I think) they are assumed basics of the setting. The light novel this is based on does go into more detail on how things work, so maybe less assumed basics and more cut for runtime. Anyway, to briefly explain a few of those points: For legal reasons, this is Not China. It is mostly inspired by China from a couple periods of time, the medicine side of things is more modern, and there a few things thrown in out of sync with real history (like the chocolate next episode). On the kidnapping: The servants are paid for the work they do. Some servants send money home to their families. Some families force their children to work at the palace to receive that money. The people regulating this have no way to tell the difference between a person being essentially sold by their parents, or by kidnappers, and in this society they're more likely to believe the word of the man than the girl. So on Maomao's paperwork, she's got the kidnappers listed as her "family" and some of her pay gets sent to them, but her contract is up in two years and then she can leave. There are some things specific to this setting, which I'm going to err on the side of not explaining for now as I've seen many comments on other people's videos along the lines of "Well actually, [thing that is explained in-universe several episodes down the line.]" There's one character in particular who is portrayed one way at first and differently once we know more about them, but from first meeting people will leave comments like dissecting the language used and how the subtitles went with X but that phrase could also mean Y, and basically people just aren't as subtle as they think they are. One last point, this is one of those shows where you're going to want to keep track of who is connected to who

If I'm to take a stab at who I suspect you mean, it's the head woman over the concubines.

Gotta love anime and video games dedication to China not existing but everything about whatever country is showcased being China. So essentially indentured servitude. I had a pretty big feeling the political connections would be a big part. I'll do my best to keep track, it can be tough though with side characters, especially when, because anime, everyone kind of has similar faces.

You need an explanation or diagram or anything, just let me know. I'm more than happy to make one that doesn't include stuff you haven't come across yet. I wouldn't suggest googling as there are 15 light novels out and the first season of the anime covers the first two.

I will keep this in mind, I feel like if I don't have a good grasp by episode 6, I'll know I need something like that.
