The disappearing letters refers to letters that may or may not have been sent the whole time, for the not visiting at all. Not for this particular event. I do feel a little bad for Masuho-no-Susuki. She genuinely put a lot of time and effort into the two kimono, so for the prince to not even show up that has to sting.
