Going into this with you saying "I know this is a romance film" was uh. Interesting😂 But it does those yuri vibes to be fair. I think the knife part came from Noriko seeing Anna use one to sharpen her pencil earlier. So she knows Anna has one, and she told her mother about it at some point. Either her mother remembered that conversation and used it to embellish details, or Noriko just lied about what happened. I *think* Anna being able to see Marnie had to do with the tides. So when she was saying she forgot about Marnie, it's because she forgot to get there in time for high tide. But the film was really subtle about it and I only got it on this watch myself to be fair. I do think we can call what Marnie went through abuse. Bullying is abuse, it's not inherently lesser for it even if the word is often used to imply such. Neglect from the parents, emotional and physical abuse from the nan and the maids. Even if they weren't directly hitting her or anything. The bit that didn't sit right for me was how uninvolved the Oiwas were. Like this kid is found passed out on the side of the road and you're not going to keep a closer eye on her? Just tell her to look for her missing shoe in the marsh? And like I appreciate them not being harsh with the Noriko situation but also they weren't there how can they just trust her so much? I do quite like the credits song. I like that Anna was able to make friends with Sayaka and Hisako and Toichi, but not with any of her peers. Oh and about the knife! I dunno how normal it is nowadays, but one of my high school teachers sharpened his pencils with a knife. It's what would have been done before they invented pencil sharpeners.
