So you misunderstood the beginning. Steven wasn't mad that the gems tested him. He was upset at himself. Because he feels like he failed. And didn't prove himself. So the reason he gets mad that they rigged the test. Is because he wonders if they truely believe in him. How can their team work if they treat him like someone who needs protection. Not a member himself. And he is worried they are correct as well. So what's sad here. Is that he puts the gems first. He hears they are just as scared as he is about his progress. So he decided not to confront them about how he feels they treat him. And on one side we accept that the gems are doing their best. Not really trying to sabotage his growth. But... they should be able to talk about this. Steven is just too kind to bring it up. And we even see this in Warp Tour. Where Steven actually gets angry that Pearl won't listen. Anyways. Even if some stuff like rigging a test is something done in shows. This is actually a good take. Because it's not about the troupe it's about the characters and how they effect each other. It's real. It's a realistic situation that happens in real life.

Yeah, it was a bad read on my part the first time I saw this episode, I still stand by my feelings on the episode at the end broadly though(You point out that they should be able to talk about this, definitely an aspect of it that would become more important as the show progressed, but I still think what Steven did here was a good thing, even if not for himself) The characters being at the center of why this story happened, and it making perfect sense, made me love this episode more than I ever expected to.

Not at all, one of the best parts of doing these videos is substantive comments. Even one's that point out my mistakes. :p
