"What's the campfire doing here?" Smoke signals, Native-American-style. Build a fire, add bundles of wet grass or something else that produces lots of smoke, then hold a wet blanket over it to trap the smoke. Yanking the blanket away lets the smoke out in one big puff, and different agreed-upon patterns of smoke puffs convey the messages.
