I think you're vastly underestimating how manipulative Mother Gothel was and how she was utilising the isolation. The only sense of the outside world Rapunzel has is that window and her three books, she doesn't have any other frame of referance. Mother Gothel is the only example of a mother she has ever known. And her technique of insulting while pretending it's out of love is effective enough when real abusers use it against their much-less-isolated victims.

I can see that. I have a relatively low tolerance for characters who have significantly less common sense than they should, so I may have been harsh.
