The Lobby: Bacurau and "Virtual Cinema" (Patreon)

Kino Lorber is distributing Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles's new Bacurau via a new spin on the streaming model that we're already seeing proliferate in the age of quarantine and closed theaters: the "virtual cinema" release, which shares revenue for the film with independent theaters across the country. In part because it represents a curious merging of the streaming and theatrical experience, and in part because Bacurau is a film that benefits from knowing as little about it as possible going in, Scott and Keith devote the first half of their discussion of the film to what "virtual cinema" means for the future of theaters, independent and chain alike. Then they dive into Bacurau (shallowly and with great care to avoid spoilers) to talk about what makes it a prime example of a "gearshift movie," and how its take on Brazilian politics plays on a more universal level. Check it out, and if you haven't checked out Bacurau yet, it's still playing, virtually, in theaters across the country — just take your pick.
