All four of your Next Picture Show co-hosts count themselves as fans of the Broadway musical phenomenon Hamilton — though as we'll discuss in this bonus episode, not unequivocally so — which means we were all looking forward to experiencing the recent Disney+ premiere of the filmed version of the original Broadway cast production.  After spending our July 4 weekends watching the movie at home with our families (with intermissions of varying lengths), we convened to discuss our reactions to seeing this material we are all so familiar with translated to the medium of film — as well as our reactions to the old criticisms of Hamilton that flared back up over the movie's premiere weekend.

When Keith cleverly asked who he'd be playing in the second act, my first thought was the "Local Man" he appeared as in The Onion. But Genevieve's comeback was better. Unrelated: another segment of Hamilton Hate was from rap purists who thought of this as "fake rap"...perhaps with echoes of what jazz purists thought about Gershwin and rock purists about Weber & Rice. I'll note that the few times I've heard this it's from men just as white as the History Purists and Broadway Purists.

Most of the criticism I've read has been really insightful and acknowledges that it is an entertaining musical that's a good thing, because it's amazing quality and energy and starting discussion, etc., but it's representation instead of presentation; it's still not telling the stories of POC, telling stories of slavers without being about slavery. I only had a low quality bootleg before this so I really liked having visible lips and subtitles.
