The Projector #82: What Can We Do For You? (Patreon)
Content
by Keith Phipps
It’s been brought to our attention that we’re close to reaching our $2,000 goal on Patreon. First off, thanks to all of you for helping make that happen. Second, it looks like we promised more content at the $2,000 level. If new members keep coming on at the same pace, we’ve got a month or so to think about what we can do. But, first, we wanted to ask you what you’d like from us. A few options:
More written materialWe hope you’re enjoying this newsletter. My goal has to been to keep it light and informative work as an extension of what we do on the show (with some occasional digressions about the movie Ghost). Would you like other kinds of written material? As with all potential additions, there are limits in terms of resources. We’re all working pretty hard already, in other words, especially Genevieve, who does a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to editing. But that’s why I want to gauge interest to see what people want before wee start working on anything.
More bonus episodesOur approach to bonus episodes has been to try to keep them coming at a steady flow based on what’s out there that interests us. (Like, say, movies featuring King Kong and Godzilla.) Are we on the right track? Do you like some of the topical episodes we’ve knocked out, as when Warner Bros. announced it would be premiering movies simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters?
Audio commentariesWe enjoyed doing the audio commentary for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World? Would you like more? Are there any particular types of films you’d like us to hit? (Maybe Ghost? Or something with King Kong and Godzilla? Probably not, though.)
Other stuffHangouts? A bonus episode on a movie voted on by Patreon supporters. A while back, someone requested a Discord channel, which seems like a good idea. What else? We’re listening.
And — here comes the segue — we’re hope you’re listening to our current episodes on revenge movies pairing The Limey with Nobody starring Bob Odenkirk (still trying to get a handle on that).
If you’re looking for items to read, here are a few pieces we enjoyed (or wrote, or both):
• Speaking of Nobody, at Polygon, Ben Kuchera considers it as the dark (or even darker) side of John Wick.
• For Criterion’s The Current, our pal Donna Bowman wrote about movie afterlives.
• The Oscars might be over by the time you read this, but the argument will probably remain valid: At Slate, Sam Adams suggests the Academy can and should look beyond Pixar for its winner.
• At GQ, Keith Phipps looks Oscars’ acting nominees for 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020 to see what’s changed and what hasn’t.
• At Decider, Charles Bramesco celebrates 20 years of Freddy Got Fingered (warning, the photo attached to the piece is unpleasant!)
• At Vulture, E. Alex Jung talks to Mads Mikkelson (‘nuff said).
