With the unveiling of the Oscar nominations yesterday, this year’s awards season entered its final phase. What does that mean to you? For me, I feel a professional obligation to fill in the most conspicuous gaps in my 2021 viewing, starting with the top categories. This year I’m in pretty good shape. I just need to watch The Eyes of Tammy Faye and King Richard to be up to speed, allowing me to speed some time trying to catch up with categories like Documentary and Best International Film.

What’s everybody else’s strategy? Do the Oscars ever put a movie on your radar, or do all the titles already sound familiar when you hear the nominations? I’m personally quite intrigued by Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom, Bhutan’s entry in the Best International Film category and a movie I had not heard of until yesterday. Will you be trying to cram in as much as possible before March 27th?

The bigger question: should you? It’s not like the Oscars has a great track record for consistently nominating the year’s best movies. There’s a good chance your time might be better off seeking out better movies. True confession: I never got around to Hillbilly Elegy. I also don’t really regret it. We only have so many hours on this planet.

For those who want to catch up, Tasha’s staff published a guide to where to watch all the nominees at Polygon yesterday. (Sadly, Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom’s not yet available.) Whatever your approach, we’ll doubtlessly be dropping some special episodes around the Oscars between now and the awards.

In the meantime, we hope you’re enjoying our tragic Macbeth double feature. And if you want to familiarize yourself with a special guest we have coming up, check out this excerpt from rom-com expert Scott Meslow’s new book From Hollywood With Love.

I try to watch all of the Best Picture nominees, but that's it. Maybe best Director if I feel up to it. I never bother trying to watch all the Actor/Actress nominees as those are often filled with Big Performances in terrible biopics. The prestige biopic is probably my least favorite genre of film and I get enough of those in the Best Picture category.

I usually try to see as much I can though I often have a couple docs and international films that don’t appeal to me, and usually one or two acting award only films like Richard Jewel, Judy or the aforementioned Hillbilly Elegy that I don’t get to. This year I’ve seen all the top category stuff except Ricardos, which I hadn’t necessarily been planning to get to, Lunana and the 3 docs that aren’t Flee and Summer of Soul. Probably will see one or two of those, especially with so much time till the ceremony, but I’m lucky that my natural viewing habits lead me to see most of the nominated films already.

I went through the nominations and made a private Letterboxd list of what I haven't seen, and I have to be honest and say there's not a great deal of desire in my heart for most of the titles on there. I wanted to see West Side Story in theaters but didn't because I wanted to see it with my mom and sister, so we'll stream that when it hits Disney Plus in two-ish weeks. I was excited to see Flee is on Hulu, so I'll be sure and cram that in, and I'm pretty sure I could talk my IRL friend group into watching Tick Tick Boom for our Discord movie night. Outside of that, ehhhh. I know I should see Drive My Car but the theater it's playing at here has iffy seats and I don't want to cram myself into one for three hours if I'm being honest.
