Listeners may recall that when we had Douglas Sirk superfan Odie Henderson on the show to compare Rebecca Hall's Netflix movie Passing with Sirk's classic Imitation of Life, he talked about Sirk's work in cinema beyond melodramas and issue films. He particularly recommended 1947's Lured, starring Lucille Ball as an American in London who agrees to play detective for Scotland Yard when a friend of hers disappears and is suspected to have run afoul of a serial killer. In a role guaranteed to surprise anyone who only knows Ball from her comedy work, she heads into the weirder underside of ’40s London to investigate people placing lonelyhearts ads looking for beautiful, unattached women — including a man played by Boris Karloff, in a thoroughly amazing sequence that's worth the price of admission on its own. Tasha checked out the film and came away heartily recommending it in this latest Your Next Picture Show mini-bonus.
