Given Robert Eggers' track record as a writer-director, with The Witch and The Lighthouse under his belt, we went into his new Viking revenge saga The Northman primed for a story that doesn't feel like anything else on movie screens. We also expected another story that blurs the line between reality and the supernatural in ways that are challenging to think about and compelling to watch. (And also startling to read about — as usual, Eggers put years of research into his new film, and he was obsessed with creating the most authentic Viking story ever put to film, though that didn't stop him from adding some CG testicles to the end result.)

Tasha and Keith got together after their screening of the film to discuss how well The Northman and its cast deliver on those promises — particularly Alexander Skarsgård as the Hamlet-like displaced protagonist prince, Anya Taylor-Joy as a Russian witch, and Nicole Kidman as the wife of the murdered king. This one goes into spoiler territory, so if you're able to check the film out in theatrical release before hitting play, we'd recommend it.

There’s a reason THE NORTHMAN shares so many story elements with HAMLET: the legend of Amleth, which it’s loosely based on, was also Shakespeare’s inspiration for HAMLET. The Wikipedia article about Amleth has a pretty good explanation.

Just out of curiosity, have any of you been watching/watched Apple Tv's Severance and are there any plans to switch channels for a discussion? I don't want to sound ungrateful for the abundance of great content you all already give us, I'm just selfishly hoping for a discussion of my new favourite show from my longtime favourite podcast.

Haha, sounds like me with my friends. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the future and satisfy my hunger with the Vulture coverage for now. Thanks for the response!
