We might not hav officially announced this yet, so here's a little secret: our next episodes will be inspired by Nope, a film about which we know virtually nothing. But we definitely expect it will give us plenty to talk about, based on Jordan Peele's previous films and, even if we didn't, there's really not much else opening that we could see ourselves building a pairing around. (Sorry to those hoping for a DC League of Super-Pets episode.) But we understand that it's at least partly an alien invasion story, so we decided to take our best guess and pair it with the grandaddy of all alien-invasion movies:  the 1996 Charlie Sheen classic The Arrival. Just kidding: we'll be pairing it with Byron Haskin's 1953 film The War of the Worlds.

Will it be a good fit? Eh...? Hopefully! We try not to put ourselves in this situation too often. Usually we've either seen the movie we're picking or have a pretty good idea what it's about. This one? Nope? Nope.

But here's the thing: I can't speak for my co-hosts, but I don't mind the stretch. I think it's okay when the connection is a little tenuous. Beyond being set in Australia and being, broadly speaking, mysteries, do Picnic at Hanging Rock and The Dry have that much in common? No, not really. But I like those episodes. And I also feel like if we'd found a mystery with more in common to the plot of The Dry we might had less to talk about. (Also, I'll take any excuse to talk about Picnic at Hanging Rock.)

What about you? Do you prefer it when we're closer to a 1:1 in the film's we're covering? (I think the current pairing of Grizzly Man and Fire of Love are pretty close to that.) Do you mind it when we stretch? And if we were just way, way off—maybe Nope is a stealth musical—would you listen anyway?

I like the pairings that deal with similar themes, but in contrasting ways, like last year's pairing of Deliverance with The Power of the Dog. Yes, they both deal with performative, toxic masculinity, but are otherwise very different films. On the other hand, when the pairings are extremely close (Nightmare Alley/Nightmare Alley), I think the episodes can get a bit repetitive. FWIW, I'm very much looking forward to your thoughts on The War of the Worlds and Nope, even if they don't end up being all that similar. In fact, if they end up being very different movies, that could lead to a productive discussion about how Hollywood scifi has changed in the past 69 years (nice).

Well, I guess I'll welcome any opportunity to hear people talk about Paths of Glory. /in reference to what I'm guessing was the biggest stretch of a pairing. It might be a false impression, but I feel like the less 1:1 pairings get slightly older movies, and for some reason those interest me more. And I don't know how much of that interest is the Gen-Xer in me refusing to acknowledge the 90s were over 20 years ago.

I dunno if it’s necessarily blind pairings I enjoy so much as less-obvious matches that get thought up. Two of my favorite pairings were Memento-Finding Dory and Mean Girls-The Favourite

Edwin Arnaudin and James Rosario

Y'all are smart and could make engaging shows out of ERASERHEAD and BAMBI, so the 1:1 isn't essential to me.

If I’m being totally honest, how much I like a pairing is probably a clear function of how much I like the film itself. But beyond that, I think both closer-themed films and more random/unusual pairings can work well. The one thing I think doesn’t work well is remakes because there the films are *too close.* On the other hand, one of my favorite recent pairings was Throne of Blood / The Tragedy of Macbeth, which are obviously very related in terms of narrative source but also wildly different films. (Also tho Throne of Blood.) And I also tend to like 2 films by the same director, which often have stylistic and thematic similarities while the narratives can be very different. So I guess I’d say having one or the other is helpful (as a listener).

Yeah, I think the best pairings are ones with some connective tissue but not so much that it feels like you’re covering the same basic material/information

Billy Thompson

You all could pair it with the phone book and still make it interesting. You do you and I will be into it I’m sure.

I mean, it sounds like I'm brown nosing but honestly, I just like hearing the four of you talk about film. I mean, film, TV, board games...I just like listening to the four of you talk about nerdy subjects. Let's just put it that way.
