Seven years after starting this podcast we recently took a break. Admittedly, it was a short break — we just decided to sit out the month of August — but it was kind of weird, at least for me. This podcast has become part of the rhythm of my weeks, from the weekly planning meetings on Slack to the bi-weekly recording sessions (usually but not always on a Thursday night) to the ceremonial tweeting out of each new episode. It’s nice, really. And during the lockdown phase of the pandemic it became more important to me than ever. I may not have been able to see my podcast friends in person anymore (true, Genevieve had already moved to Michigan), but at least we could still hang out and talk movies.

Still, that break felt pretty necessary and August didn’t really present that many enticing pairing options. (Bullet Train and… Terror Train?) And I think the break did us good, giving us a chance to catch our breath and regroup. We’ve got one bonus episode in the can — everyone brought two recommendations taken from what they watched during the break — and we’re recording two more tomorrow night. We know the rate of bonus episodes slowed a bit, but that should be turning around now.

We’ll keep this one short. Here’s some quick background reading for our next pairing (and a pretty good hint as to what it will be). We’ll be joined by returning guest (and Tolkien fan extraordinaire) Roxana Hadadi about the pleasures of fantasy entertainment where you can actually see what’s going on.

We’ll be back with more soon. Thanks, as always, for your support.

Welcome back! It sounds like the next pairing could be The Lord of the Rings and The Rings of Power, which would be an interesting pairing, given how "cinematic" (whatever that means) the Amazon series is.

Very accidentally, my Bullet Train pairing was Alfred Hitchcock’s 1932 film Number Seventeen, which at first seems to take place solely in a hallway but ends with a train heist and crash with some pretty good models. Unfortunately I think it is Hitchcock’s worst train movie.
