Looks like I'll be needing that break after all. End of the year insanity at the day job didn't leave much energy for writing (or anything else, really). Change in scheduling, though:

Dec 26: C184

Jan 2: Break

Jan 9: C185

Anyway, enjoy!

Monus

That was fun! Thanks for the chapter

Ziggy

I do believe that Rain just used "Filth", mentally, as a curse.

Metierian

Frankly SS, I'm surprised you're writing at all. I hope you have a lovely break, you've earned it.

JC Silver

Take care of yourself! Very much appreciate the new hook of a town stuck between the guild and adamants. I'm looking forward to seeing how Ascension develops from here.

Umut Numanoglu

I've no idea how you can get 106% thumb up but go get that break, you deserve it

Conor McGroarty

So did an Adamant knives team (or something) come along and do this or was it someone else claiming to be Adamants? I would claim desertion but with how fanatical and disciplined they are, the chances of someone living (even if they got the idea) after acting on it is slim to none. Maybe if they happened to be one of a few survivors of a tough battle and slipping away in the chaos but besides that, not happening with an active and alert legion. Would be nice if they are able to find a lair (making elemental refinement a strong choice after glancing at the tier 4 trees of his chosen specializations) but that would be nice any time. Was this cagey (and kinda ungrateful) robbed person was probably attacked by looters and thieves native to this place instead of whomever did this. Probably not enough resources to make some steam ships or the like. Unless there is, in which case they need to secure the area and prepare for crafting. Also it seems “whales” are monsters in this world (silver rank most like and found in ocean) instead of aquatic mammals. Would it be much the same as our world’s whales (big) except stronger or would it also have magic and maybe they are bigger? Guess a leviathan would be a gold rank creature at least. In any case, them having sea advantage would probably help equalize some levels if the person/party wasn’t prepared

Maybe some commando group of adamant who get deep into the territory and hit and run on every city they can With the power of this world and the system that will just be a nightmare (specially with a group of "soldier" with skill build specialized for this task) when "every" sylver can in 10 mn kill hundred or thousand of civilian and raze part of one city and just run after

Doodlyboy15

Seems like a town full of weirdos, I'm sure Rain won't make some friends and enemies. Take a break, gotta take care of yourself first.

Starless

Prolly would have been better to invent a quick Flair Gun device or accolade warning than involve your team's mentalist in an unknown potentially hostile situation. Also a bit disheartening to see the company commander greenlight an operation into a litteral war zone with zero Intel. What were the scouts/precog/clairvoyant doing in the days since the black smoke went up?

Chris

Your comment’s annoying. You come across as massively entitled dick.

James Heskett

Thanks for the chapter, but if works getting mental you could always quit and write full time! Then we could get more chapters!!! ... Wink wink nudge nudge!

TFTC. I am a little unclear on the goals of ascension with regards to traveling. Where are they going and why? Why did they leave the crack delve? What do they hope to accomplish in cities aside from leveling up and recruiting? These things were probably answered but it has been a while. I am excited to see the tier 4 skills. Happy holidays and see you next week.

Ascension is a chill place to hang out and level where everyone isn't a huge prick 24/7. Cuz these NPCs have been absolutely insufferable thus far. With the notable exception of that super nice and patient shopkeeper and his daughter from the beginning of the story. Hopefully they avoided the various tragedies, cullings, and general unrest going on. Ascension is currently headed to the Badlands to do some dungeon delving and avoid the Empire. Tallheart decided it was a good idea to leave evidence of his presence and direction of travel, which may have contributed to the current state of affairs in Three Cliffs.

Cirvante

Typo: "Adventures don’t help,” the man muttered <- should be 'Adventurers'.

Cirvante

Ok, there seems to have been a translation error. Whales and Leviathans are monsters here and apparently silver and gold level. And now that I'm thinking about it, it makes perfect sense. Essence density gets higher the deeper you go and while land-dwelling monsters are confined in biomes for the most part, in the ocean you just have to swim up. So silver or gold sea monsters could just come to the surface for a short time to wreck a ship and then dive back down to their preferred essence density before they leak too much. A large sea monster would also be a nightmare to fight against from a ship, especially when your ship isn't build to withstand silver or gold attacks. Now with that being said, there is a skill called Water Breathing according to Ameliah. There might be additional skills for underwater movement and combat, Hydro Evocation and Water Manipulation seem to be the magic trees. Now imagine a party of awakened specialized in underwater combat and delving, who go deep sea diving to find lairs and blues.

Andrei

January break is ok, by that time the other authors will have come back out of their own breaks, so no biggie!

If Delveworld has tectonic plates like Earth, I'd be interested in seeing if the plates' shifting and allowing ocean water to penitrate deeper into the planet's crust would create pure Essence lakes at the bottom of the ocean. Much the same way as this process produces brine lakes in our world's oceans.

Eliot Blane

Enjoy your break, you deserve it.

Loipers

Hmm... Skywhales?

Starless

Would be pretty funny if Rain accidentally went back a level after testing the Anti-Purify aura on a Crystal Slime. Purifying slimes awarded +100 EXP, so corrupting them should theoretically award -100 EXP. Could even take this to the extreme like Rain did in the cave-in arc, with EXP going so negative that the paling shrinks and becomes more dense, rather than pops.

Thenais

"If whales are ‘Whales,’ then what the hell are Leviathans?" stay tuned for futur chapter "how i culled a plethoric cast with a single mob"
