The school day had left me raw.

By the time Emma and I got back to the safehouse, my face ached from smiling, my voice was hoarse from keeping it soft and high, and every inch of my body felt like it belonged to someone else. The preppy plaid outfit had been cute in the mirror that morning, but after hours of tugging the mini skirt down, adjusting the blazer, and feeling the tights cling to my smooth legs, I just wanted to disappear into something softer.

Sarah had laid out clothes for me on the bed in the pink room they’d given me. A pink ruffled camisole top with delicate straps and a matching pair of frilly white shorts that barely skimmed the tops of my thighs. A big pink gingham bow sat waiting on the pillow. I changed quickly, tying the bow into my hair the way Emma had shown me, and climbed onto the bed.

The room was too girly. Pink walls, pink bow-patterned bedding, a white ornate headboard, little pink lamps. It looked like it belonged to a princess, not a man in hiding. But that was the point.

I lay on my stomach the way I had seen girls do in movies — legs bent, chin resting near my hands — and stared at the diary someone had left on the bed. My fingers brushed the ruffles of the shorts. The fabric was soft. The skin underneath was even softer, still smooth from the full shave that morning. Every tiny movement reminded me how exposed I was.

The school day replayed in my head like a film I couldn’t turn off.

Jake’s easy smile when he called us “the new twins.” The way his eyes had lingered on me a second longer than Emma. The whispers in the hallway. The feeling of the mini skirt swaying against my thighs every time I walked. The tights. The boots. The constant, exhausting performance of being Ella. And underneath it all, the low, constant thrum of tension I hadn’t been able to shake since the transformation started. I was alone. Emma was in her room doing homework. Sarah was downstairs with Ryan. The door was closed.

My hand slipped under the ruffled hem of the shorts almost without thinking. Just pressure. Just relief. Just something to quiet the noise in my head after a full day of being someone else. The feminine clothes made it feel dirtier somehow — the little white shorts, the bow in my hair, the smooth skin under my fingers. I closed my eyes and tried to lose myself in it for thirty seconds of peace. The door opened. I froze. Sarah stood in the doorway, one hand still on the handle. Her eyes took in the scene in one sharp sweep — me on the bed in the frilly white outfit, hand where it shouldn’t be, the guilty flush on my face. For a second neither of us moved. Then her expression hardened.

She stepped inside and closed the door behind her with a quiet click. “Do you have any idea what you’re risking?” Her voice was low, furious, barely controlled.

“One slip-up. One moment of you acting like a man instead of the girl we need you to be, and we could all be found. You’re not just putting yourself in danger, David. You’re putting Emma in danger. Do you understand that?” I sat up quickly, the ruffles of the shorts riding up as I moved. Shame burned hot in my chest. “Sarah, I—”

“Don’t.” She held up a hand. “Don’t even try to explain. I saw you. After everything we’ve done today to keep you safe. After the wig, the makeup, the clothes, the voice coaching… this is what you do the second you’re alone?”

She pulled out her phone. I watched, stomach sinking, as she typed something. A moment later there was a soft knock on the door. Ryan stepped inside.

He took one look at me — sitting on the edge of the bed in the tiny white ruffled shorts and camisole, the big pink bow still in my hair, cheeks burning — and his face stayed perfectly calm. Professional. Like this was just another operational problem to solve. Sarah closed the door behind him.

“He was touching himself,” she said flatly. “In the middle of the afternoon. In full girl mode. If anyone had seen through the window — if Emma had walked in — what then?”

Ryan nodded slowly, like he’d been expecting something like this.

“It’s a common issue in deep-cover work,” he said quietly. “Especially when the operative is required to maintain a female persona for extended periods. The body still has… urges. But urges lead to slips. Slips lead to exposure.” He looked at me directly. Not unkindly. Just steady.

“There’s a simple solution we’ve used before. A chastity device. It removes the temptation entirely. Keeps the mind focused on the role instead of… distractions. It’s discreet. No one will know. And it ensures you stay fully in character.” I stared at him. “You want to lock me up.”

“It’s not about punishment,” Ryan said calmly. “It’s about protection. Yours. Sarah’s. Emma’s. The longer this operation runs, the more important it is that you don’t give in to old habits. This keeps everyone safe.” Sarah was quiet for a moment. Then she nodded. “Do it.” The next twenty minutes were the most humiliating of my life.

Ryan left and returned with a small black case. Sarah stayed. I sat on the edge of the bed while they explained how it worked — clinical, matter-of-fact, like fitting a piece of equipment. The device was cold when they fitted it. The metal felt alien against my smooth, sensitive skin. Ryan worked efficiently while Sarah watched, arms folded. Every tiny adjustment made me flinch. When the ring went on and the cage clicked into place over me, the final lock engaged with a quiet but final snick.

I felt the weight of it immediately — heavy, restrictive, and impossible to ignore. The locked metal sat against me like a constant, unyielding claim. Sarah took the key.

She held it in her palm for a second, then slipped it into the pocket of her jeans. For a brief moment her expression softened — not quite regret, but something closer. A flicker of the woman who had once been my wife crossed her face before the resolve returned, harder than before. Fear, maybe. Or the first spark of something darker she wasn’t ready to name.

“You’ll wear it until we decide otherwise,” she said. Her voice had shifted — still angry, but colder now. More resolved. “No arguments. No exceptions. This is how it has to be.”

Ryan gave a small nod of approval. “Smart decision.” They left me alone after that.

I stayed on the bed exactly where they’d left me, the ruffled white shorts still on, the pink bow still in my hair. The device felt strange and heavy between my legs — a constant, inescapable reminder that pressed against me with every tiny shift of the frilly fabric. There was no relief. No way to forget it was there.

I stared at my reflection in the vanity mirror across the room. A girl in cute loungewear. Long hair with a big bow. Smooth legs. The picture of innocence.

Except now even that last private part of me was no longer mine. The relief I’d felt at school — the strange, dangerous comfort of being Ella — curdled into something heavier.

This wasn’t temporary anymore. Not really. The click of that lock had changed everything. And somewhere downstairs, I could hear Sarah and Ryan talking in low voices. Their voices were calm. United. I lay back down on the pink bow-patterned bedding, exactly as I had been when Sarah walked in, and closed my eyes.

The first night of many.
