God even though I read the novel and knew what was going to happen, this episode still had me at the edge of my seat. That cliffhanger is absolutely diabolical and I can see why people were recommending watching episode 12 and 13 together lol. I can’t praise the VAs enough- all of them absolutely nail it with the emotions and madness (Megose’s VA stole the show for me this ep). Here’s some spoiler free explanations for certain things that the donghua has only glossed over or didn’t explain fully (in short here comes the essay lol): - Beyonder characteristics can be more easily explained as the spiritual remnants of the potions within a Beyonder- when someone takes a potion to become a Beyonder, the powers given by the potion take on a physical characteristic within a Beyonder’s body, usually in the form of an organ, blood, crystal, etc., and remain within the body of a Beyonder until they die. Even if a Beyonder completely digests a potion, the characteristic always remains and grows stronger with each potion consumed. The characteristic is the physical and spiritual manifestation of the powers granted by sequence potions- consuming the characteristic of a Beyonder can grant said powers to whoever consumes it as it acts as a key ingredient to a potion itself. It’s why when Klein was divining for the formula for the Clown potion, Ray Bieber and the Secret Order Clown’s Beyonder characteristics (the glowing brain and the crystallized blood) where shown to him- basically, Klein could have used one of the characteristics to concoct the Clown potion as well. To me, this further shows how messed up the world of Beyonders is because being able to gain powers by consuming Beyonder characteristics absolutely means that there are people out there who hunt other Beyonders solely to kill and eat their characteristic. Hopefully this explanation helps a bit, and I do think season 2 will offer an even more in-depth explanation on why characteristics matter so much - Dunn consuming the characteristics of deceased Nighthawks directly affects his potion digestion negatively because for each characteristic consumed, Dunn essentially has to devote energy to digesting the remnant Beyonder powers of said characteristics. It’s why despite being so strong for a Sequence 7, Dunn has thus far been unable to fully digest his potion- the remnant powers of the characteristics slow him down exponentially as he’s basically shotgunning potions. Consuming too many characteristics can lead to a higher risk of losing control, so Dunn is really living up to the “we are guardians, but also a bunch of miserable wretches constantly fighting against threats and madness” quote here - like potions, Beyonder characteristics should only be consumed by others on the same pathway. The Sleepless pathway is the most common pathway for the Nighthawks, hence why Dunn consumed Kenley’s characteristic but not Old Neil’s (even though in the novel, he still wanted to despite the risk just so he could have a piece of Old Neil with him always) - it’s not explained fully, but whenever Dunn consumes the characteristic of a deceased Beyonder, he is able to see them in his dreams. This is what he means when he says that he wants to keep them by his side as a Nightmare, Dunn is often unable to differentiate between dreams and reality so the mental strain of seeing all those you’ve lost mixed in with the present reality must be devastating to deal with Amazing reaction as always, I can’t wait to see your reaction to ep 13. I love your theory and how you really pay attention to the show and the story- it shows how engaged you are and how much you respect the donghua which is what makes you a top-tier reactor for me lol EDIT: sorry forgot to include that Megose is such a tragic victim- she was manipulated by a Sequence 8 Swindler who had a Sequence 7 Psychiatrist on his side. This heavily implies that Megose never had a choice to begin with and was hypnotized by Lanevus and Hood Eugen so she would remain complacent while a vessel for an evil god was forced into her body. It’s a miracle she lasted as long as she did as the True Creator is infamous for driving people to madness with ‘His’ ravings, and Megose had to live with that corruption for months which absolutely destroyed what little of her mind she had left.
