For some context about Saber's past, you need to look into Arthurian Myth a bit deeper than most people actually know about King Arthur. While King Arthur's story is pretty well known, that he drew a sword that proclaimed him king and founded a prosperous Knightdom known as Camelot with a Round Table at its core, the reality is a little different. Arthur, or rather Artoria in this case, was actually prophesized to draw the Sword of Selection and become King, and she was told by Merlin that upon doing so, she would forgo her humanity and die in her efforts as King. She pulled the sword anyways, believing it not only to be her destiny, but that she was capable of maintaining the greatest kingdom ever for eternity. But because of the way she governed, and how she closed herself off from people, including her allies, and attempted to do everything herself and make absurd and martyr-like decisions for both her allies and serfdom, fractures began to show among her greatest knights, as defined by multiple key moments that led to Camelot's downfall. The knight that Saber claims abandoned Camelot while claiming the king did not understand the hearts of men was a famous Round Table Knight named Tristan, and his departure was something of a harbinger for everything going to hell. Her greatest knight, Lancelot, was having an affair with her wife, Guinevere, and because Artoria knew that her marriage was for show (she could not have an heir, after all), she did nothing about it. But when the news of the affair broke and the kingdom called for Lancelot's head, Artoria refused to punish him. Many of the knights splintered from this decision, as the idea she would let such blatant disrespect and subterfuge go was a point of huge contention. Lancelot even went mad in the aftermath, not able to deal with a life where his crimes were known but he wasn't held responsible for them. Everything came to a head when one of the newer Round Table Knights named Mordred confronted the king, revealing himself as Artoria's blood heir, and that he would love to be formally inducted as such and be set up as the next king of Camelot. The story behind Mordred and how he was born in Fate is obviously a little wacky because Fate changed Arthur to be female, but magic and sorcery was involved to create Mordred. Artoria denied Mordred the throne and did so very poorly, unable to properly convey what she thought of him and not budging on the matter. Mordred then led a rebellion against the king, rallying the portion of the knighthood that was beginning to be upset with Arthur, and in a great civil war, Artoria eventually died in a mutual kill with her son Mordred. Artoria then decided, on her last breaths, that she was not worthy of the sword and that Camelot's fate was only guaranteed to be destroyed by the prophecy because she would be King. If she was not king, the whole prophecy didn't matter, and thus Britain's fate could be averted. She doesn't realize though, just how much her story altered the course of history and defined knighthood and heroism in the centuries following, and that even if many of her knights could not understand her, they very much respected and admired her, and in the end, to undo all of that is to undo every one of their experiences, struggles, and triumphs, while at the same time altering the course of history from then forward. Iskandar sees that and believes it to be foolish and disrespectful. Sorry for the loooong lore dump the Saber of all characters in Fate has gotten the most explained of her backstory throughout all the different anime and books and games, so it's fun to read about. PS: The three Hellenistic Kingdom's that Alexander the Great's empire splintered into where focused in the general areas of Egypt, Syria, and Greece. It was not a quick process though, and the reestablishment of borders took decades of war.
