I’m getting close to writing the first Portal, and I thought it might be fun to let you guys have a small say in what kind of theme it could have.

I’ve got a few ideas for future Portals, but I’m curious what kind of themes you’d enjoy the most.

Pick as many as you like, this isn’t a promise that the winner will be next, but I’ll definitely keep the results in mind.

And feel free to throw your own ideas into the comments. I’m curious what you can come up with :)

This is tough.

Every story told to t he MC about the wider world and the dangers that lurk have been uncanny powers and entities preying on humanity. Maybe stay on theme with that sort of world building?

Jacob Garza

It depends if its random or he is specifically tailored for a build to enter it. As an example the spiders was a great one for him. But possibly a cave/dark one would allow him to better use his advantages even if opponents are primarily illusion users

Froyo Baggins

I say don't use dark dungeon or undead, they're overused themes in stories. --Froyobaggins' wife

*picks Ancient Ruins without reading the rest* *finally sees "Trust the author"* "Dang, now it looks like i dont trust the author 😢"

I also chose ancient ruins. The premise and Ariens own life goals of exploring the unknown have left me, the reader, also hungry for more of that in the story. I want to explore alongside our MC and trust the author to cook up some truly exciting mysteries and yet to be known beings. Hopefully stuff that ties into future plot points like our band of murder hobo mages in the tyranny.

Ondrej Hanslik

I very dislike when the author is so insecure that they have to ask what the readers want to see.

I agree with the uncanny/enteties and humanoids preying on people theme. It would be very cool to get more lore through ancient ruins - but it would fit that the vibe is ominous/creepy i trust your vision anyways

Hmmm, I'm assuming this is the known permanent portal as a reward/training exercise. There's interesting trade offs between how much the characters are prepared for this specific portal versus portals in general. Like, assuming a veteran is going in with them, it might make sense to not explain the environment much beforehand so they can be trained in methodology. Some stupid acronym like Survive, Evade, Resist, Escape as opposed to, "Okay, let's climb the first hill, lookout for the Demon Hawks" I guess the 2nd would make a little more sense if they're only expected to enter known portals. The 1st allows for more tension when things go inevitably wrong cause the vet has a heart attack or something

Daniel Velasco

As long as the dungeon matters more than just kill monsters make numbers go up

Adurna

Illusions and psychological pressure both sounds like playing to his strength and a more interesting choice, possibly combined :)

Halfcrzy

Illusions could be fun, and re-motivate our heroes. But the lost magic and ruins may give him an actually edge up in magic since he seems painfully normal.
