Arien woke with a splitting headache and no idea how he had gotten into bed.

Only after soothing some of the pain with Life mana did the events of the previous day begin returning to him. He remembered leaving the hall furious, then collapsing somewhere outside.

When he had received Serig Voltorey’s invitation, Arien had expected threats hidden beneath polite words and enough money to make yesterday’s incident disappear. The offer to end his friendship with Reyna had already gone further than expected. The mental attack had crossed an entirely different line.

He was furious with Reyna's father.

Arien had no idea what Skill Serig had used, but it had been nothing like Sir Samwell's Command or Velyn's subtler influence. Even thinking about it made him feel dirty. His will had been bent under pressure, and throughout the entire struggle he'd known with absolute certainty that if he gave in, he would lose some part of himself.

He had never fought so desperately against anything inside his own mind. Serig's influence had pressed in like grasping tendrils, tearing at the defenses around his thoughts while Arien clung to them with everything he had.

He had known that Faction conflicts involved assassinations and worse, but those struggles had always seemed distant. At the Academy, it was easy to believe that people outside them could live under some basic protection of law and status.

Serig had proved otherwise. He could have killed Arien, and very few people would have cared enough, or been powerful enough, to do anything about it.

If Arien wanted that to change, he needed either someone powerful standing behind him or enough strength to stand on his own.

He thought of Ramsy's superior smirk and of Serig speaking to him as though he were barely a person at all. One day, when Arien was strong enough, he would repay them in kind.

For now, at least the last two days hadn't been entirely wasted. Surviving Ramsy and Serig had produced some impressive gains.

Level: 23Experience: 2060/2400 (+1280)

Assigned Skills: 8/9

Mana Sense (Uncommon): lvl 39 → 40First Specialization: Hawk Eye

Mana Manipulation (Rare): lvl 54 → 56First Specialization: Magic ResearcherSecond Specialization: Mana Weaver

Lightning Aspect (Rare): lvl 33First Specialization: Lightning Mage

Fire Aspect (Uncommon): lvl 47 → 50First Specialization: Fire Mage

Unshakable Mind (Rare): lvl 30 → 40First Specialization: Blissful Sleep

Life Aspect (Rare): lvl 55 First Specialization: HealerSecond Specialization: Guardian of Life

Earth Aspect (Uncommon): lvl 29 → 31First Specialization: Earth Mage

Words of Magic (Rare): lvl 28 → 29First Specialization: Inner Voice

Ten levels in Unshakable Mind was absurd, even by the System’s tendency to reward extreme situations.

More importantly, Fire Aspect had finally reached level fifty.

Whether the breakthrough came from watching Ramsy, defending against him, or Arien’s own desperate attacks hardly mattered now.

Possible Skill Specialization – Fire Aspect, Level 50 I Specialization: Fire Mage II Specialization:

Pyromaniac: Burn, world, burn. You enjoy seeing everything around you engulfed in flames. Increases the range and power of area-of-effect Fire Magic spells.

Firefighter: Take the matches away from children before they burn themselves. Increases the effectiveness of defensive spells against Fire Magic and allows easier influence over foreign spells.

Battle Flame: Fire was always meant to be a weapon. Significantly increases the damage of combat-oriented Fire Magic spells.

Fire Adept: A hotter flame is useless if half your mana goes to waste. Reduces the mana cost of Fire Magic and increases its overall efficiency.

Fire Researcher: Fire is not only destruction, it is life. Significantly increases the efficiency and control of Fire Magic in non-combat spells.

Four advanced specializations was a respectable result. His first advancement had offered six, but the initial choice usually provided the widest range of paths. As they had learned in Introduction to the System, later options depended partly on his other Skills. How he had actually used Fire Magic mattered as well.

Arien read through the four choices again.

Fire Researcher was easy to discard. It pushed the Aspect toward academic and crafting applications, neither of which interested him. Firefighter was useful, but he wanted Fire to remain one of his main offensive tools.

That left Battle Flame, Fire Adept and Pyromaniac.

He spent a long time comparing the three before settling on Pyromaniac.

The name was unfortunate, but the specialization fit what he wanted from Fire. Battle Flame offered greater raw damage, while Fire Adept would have continued along his current, more versatile path. But with his Second Specialization, he knew he couldn't keep choosing the safest option every time.

If Fire had been his only offensive Aspect, he probably would have chosen differently, but Lightning already gave him another option against powerful individual opponents.

That left Fire free to fill a different role. Arien could already imagine waves of flame clearing weaker enemies during a Portal raid while Lightning dealt with whatever survived. Childish, perhaps, but still useful.

He assigned Pyromaniac.

Warmth spread through his body as unfamiliar configurations and applications of Fire Magic settled into his thoughts. Then another notification appeared.

Arien grinned. He had expected it, but seeing the words still felt extremely satisfying.

Seven choices.

That was more than he had received during his first Profession selection, partly because he had chosen the broad Mage path rather than one of the rarer specialized alternatives.

He immediately crossed out Fire Mage, and Life Mage. The Academy had covered Profession advancement often enough that none of those surprised him.

Most students began with Mage Novice, later advancing into Mage or a more specialized Profession suited to their Skills or family traditions.

Profession advancement was a favorite subject of speculation among students, but Arien preferred the Academy’s simpler explanation. Future options were believed to depend on level, Skills, Specializations, and Traits,  but the Masters deliberately avoided teaching detailed advancement trees, warning that trying to manipulate the System too directly could narrow or distort later choices.

As far as Arien knew, the advancement he was aiming for required at least three second-tier magical specializations, one of them in Mana Manipulation, along with several developed mental Skills. He had expected Battle Mage, Mana Master, Fire Mage, and Life Mage. Elemental Mage was a pleasant surprise, though he already had more discovered Aspects than available slots.

The final two were completely new to him.

Mage of Vengeance was almost certainly connected to his Avenger Trait and looked like a more specialized version of Battle Mage. The only concern was what might happen to the Profession if he ever lost the Trait.

Magic Explorer was harder to place. It overlapped somewhat with Mana Master, but the Rare tier, additional attribute points, and bonus experience made it difficult to dismiss.

Arien had spent years wavering between Battle Mage and Mana Master, though lately he had been leaning more and more toward Battle Mage. Its bonuses to combat magic seemed like the safer choice for someone who expected to spend at least part of his future in Portals, expeditions, or anywhere else where a mistake could get him killed.

The two Rare Professions changed that completely, turning an already difficult choice into a nightmare.

He could wait and ask Lamaral. Over the years, she had become one of the few people whose judgment he trusted on matters like this. The problem was that he was already close to another level, and advancing before choosing a Profession would cost him several attribute points. The miser lurking inside him practically writhed at the thought of losing between three and a half and four and a half attribute points.

He was also certain she would immediately figure out where the whole revenge theme had come from. After that, she might start steering his development away from combat-oriented paths, justifying it as concern for his safety.

His practical choice was Mage of Vengeance. The combat bonuses suited his current priorities, while the additional Endurance and Agility would help address some of his weaknesses. Before today, he probably would have chosen it without much hesitation.

Instead, his attention kept returning to Magic Explorer. The Profession was less focused on survival and probably less useful in a direct fight. But it matched the reason he had wanted magic in the first place.

Arien had not spent all these years learning mana simply because he wanted to become difficult to kill. He wanted to understand it. To discover what else it could do. To see the places and magic he had only read about.

Choosing purely for safety would have been sensible.

It also would have been familiar.

He had already rejected safer paths before: leaving Sir Samwell by the roadside, choosing to develop without Spellcasting, refusing Serig’s money when accepting it would have made his life much easier.

Those decisions had not always been smart, but they had been his.

Years ago, carried in Terry’s arms beneath a sky full of unfamiliar stars, Arien had promised himself that this life would belong to him.

His eyes returned to Magic Explorer.

How would you guys build Arien’s class based on his current Skills?

Also, EoN just had an Advancement of its own: 5,000 followers! So tomorrow we’ll have a bonus chapter!

PJ

Thanks for the chapter ! The descriptions seemed a bit biaised against elemental mage. Since its the same rarity than the explorer one, it should have more bonuses, moreso that you said you had to have more than three aspects to unlock it. It should have xp bonus for aspect usage or something like this since the guy that unlock should already have the means to unlock aspects, more aspec "luck find" is not that useful Arien must specialise as you said at one point and he seems to be able to unlock all aspects, he should focus on his strong suit and build around this With 7 or so aspects unlocked, it may even exist a "basic aspect" or something to regroup some on one powerful skill?

DevilHeart77

I dont understand why Magic Explorer is even a choice for him. Up until this point basically all the magic we've seen from him has been aspected. A class that focuses on non-aspected magic seems directly disadvantagous to him and he needs the combat power, as recently indicated, to survive.

Sammot

Level 23 or proffesion upgrade thats random, i would have thought 25. Also didnt he already have the option of the elemental one the first time around?

Andi Scherndl

Thanks for the chapter! I hope he will choose Mage of Vengeance…

Jacob Garza

One thing to consider is how rare having 4 aspects and 6 unlocked aspects, or however many aspects he already has unlocked, could impact his classes. So possibly an epic class or legendary class that allows for either aspects to be removed from asignd skills into its own category or possibly gives 2 or 3 free slots for aspects or reduces aspects to half a slot cost hence must add 2 at a time? Or a class that allows him to merge multiple aspects into a better understanding. Idk his large understanding of aspects should be a major consideration for his future class. Maybe Archmage class? Just spitballing here but hope it helps!

Jachin Nelson

2 uncommon and 2 rare aspects. Fire and Earth are uncommon, Lightning and Life are Rare

K

Magic explorer explorer seems to pick up the gap of spellcasting. Arien can always adapt non-aspected spells to whatever his elements require. And it’s an unknown profession path. Looking forward to his choice!

PJ

I second that

Nev

It was pretty obvious he was going to pick magic explorer

JUSTAS

I don’t understand why the Profession advancement happens at level 23 instead of at level 25 for example because I doubt specialising Fire Mage gave that much experience. Also, I at least hope he acquires some Traits that increase his other Stats in the future because at this rate the story will end with him casting nuclear bomb-level spells while at the same time having literal glass bones and quickness of a literal sloth. A glass canon build of this level of disparity between Stats is a little ridiculous.

The Human

Idk why I thought it was 10 slots

JUSTAS

“The miser lurking inside him practically writhed at the thought of losing between three and a half and four and a half attribute points.” Should’t it be between three and a half and five attribute points?

Froyo Baggins

With all this, he seems doomed to look like an elf forever lol. Also I agree with what some other people have been, his interest in Magic Explorer seems out of nowhere. Of course, he's always been interested in the Portals and discovering how this world works. But what does that have to do with non-aspected mana? And lately, in his older years, he's had a practical focus on ensuring he has a more comprehensive build but still picking choices that don't wall off future options. I mean, a part of him might be tempted to take Magic Explorer but it would be inconsistent with his choices so far if he does take it in the end--Froyobaggins' wife

Zeke

One of the earliest things he did after learning to manipulate mana was try to absorb some from the environment, which apparently nearly killed him? (That was never revisited, but I hope it is at some point.) Arien has consistently been primarily interested in how magic works in general, and his exploration of his aspects has always been more about understanding how the aspected mana behaves differently than about a deepening spiritual connection to the aspects he's using.

Nick Pincus

I don't think his level matters for the profession advancement at all, just that he has 3 skills that are 2rd specialized.

Zeke

All the rare classes give +8.5 stat points, while the uncommons give +7.

Snooze Bear

Like the options, I think mage explorer suits him. Mage of vengeance seems a bit limiting, while ME would give him more options in the future.

JUSTAS

Ok that makes sense, thanks.

PJ

Yes but the Author said that after level 25 there is massive gap in xp needed to go to the next level (lvl x 10 become 5000 + lvl x 10 if I'm correct) so a bonus xp to some tasks is huge and as an aspect genius Arien ought to take something where he's "guaranted" to have massives progress if he dont want to end in a dead end (or need some shady plot armor)

CMA27

Agreed. Feels like it should more be elemental explorer. Similar benefits except catered to elemental spells. This feels like a plot point created just to get Arien access to cool non elemental spells. Does not feel like a natural progression.

Rip Woodham

I think Magic Explorer is the clear choice. It doesn't make Aspected magic any harder. In addition to the typical boons it *dramatically* increases his understanding of magic and additional experience is gained from magic skill levels. His magic skills affect him across every Aspect. The skill he is lacking that is making everything tremendously more difficult for him is not an Aspect skill so don't underestimate them. If anything, Arien already has an edge in Aspect magic. He benefits more from an edge in non-Aspect magic. Compared to Elemental Mage, it gives him far more that he needs right now. Compared to Mage of Vengeance, it has far less issues. Who knows what could happen with a variant dependent on vengeance? And it's dependent on combat. Getting experience from combat is good, being thirsty for it, not so much. Non-Aspect is always doing some work, whether in combat or casting Aspected magic. Most concerning, it gives him a reduced number of Profession Variants next time. What kind of reduced options is he going to have after picking an evolution focused on vengeance? Comparatively, what kind of non-reduced options will he have after picking a class focused on the exploration of magic? The stat allocation of it is a little annoying but at least he has his healing/defensive specializations and training with Life which it seems like will be the answer for his lacking physical areas going forward. Compared to the Uncommon variants, it's notable that it gives less options for the next evolution however at some point you cannot just keep picking weaker options for more possibilities next time. He'll need to learn more non-Aspected spells but I'm sure that's already part of the curriculum in later years and something he may not have even been able to do without picking this specialization since he passed on the Spellcasting skill.

Jasper Burch

It also wouldn’t have been hard to write in some cool non-aspect uses Arien discovered by not taking whatever shaping skill everyone else has.

Yozora

i wouldn't pick magic explorer, but i like that he is walking a bit far from elements, i wouldn't like him getting his army of undead, or smtg to teleport like shadow jump or spatial teleport, or smtg really broken like spatial control or time control or blood control, even though as a player in a game, i would pick elemental mage as it is obviously his main strength now and generally i go for specializations on the my strengths in games, but yh, i think some aspects can be really hard to balance and giving him smtg that help broading how u can develop him is really great. P.S.: íf u make him go for death aspect that he already has, i hope u make him go for things like spells hitting harder like a black lighting or smtg, or go for curses.

Emissary of Nothingness

For his First Mana Manipulation Specialization, he took Magic Researcher (boost in comprehension of mana and spell structure), and he never assigned Spellcasting, so for four years he had to rely on Mana Manipulation alone. One of the spells he can cast instinctively is Mana Shield as well, which is an Aspectless spell. In my mind, he’s earned Magical Explorer.

DevilHeart77

I get that part but so far we have nothing else spell wise that choice benefits. Aspectless casting has been very much not present in the story despite mentions at certain points imo

Emissary of Nothingness

I know Arien has been collecting Aspects like crazy (mythical Trait), but as it was in previous chapters, each additional Aspect becomes harder to discover. Four is basically the limit even for the top 1%. Five or more is something only Elemental Mages can reach, so to me that’s already a pretty major boost. And when I say they can cast more complex Aspect spells, I usually mean about one circle higher than their Mana Manipulation would normally allow. So if an Elemental Mage would normally be limited to third-circle spells, then fourth-circle spells suddenly become possible as long as they match one of their Aspects.

David Burchfield

So the parts that throw me are the technical terms as they have been defined in universe. I think my understanding is off because non aspected means not using aspected mana (which almost everything he does uses, and spells are the rote forms rather than rawn mana manipulation which is what he does.). Based off context I am clearly off in my understanding but it makes it harder to judge what would actually be good/fitting.

Baconwargod

Well hey at least he’s progressed and with a rare variant! Will be big for getting over the middle levels. And getting it a bit before 25 means he maybe able to get some momentum going in I wonder if this will also give exp not just for skill increases but any and all breakthroughs magical. For discovering aspects, how the aspects interact with each other and aspect less mana, and other breakthroughs not necessarily tied to his skills

m2wester

I wonder if he'll pick up another skill now. Picking up Water or Wind should immediately give him lvl 24, and halfway to 25 or so, where he'd get his next slot, if I remember correctly. Danger Sense might also be a decent idea, even if it doesn't synergize with is class as much. Though he might prefer to try to find a rare skill? Maybe that's something to discuss with Lamaral.

BerciTheBeast

Limiting the boost to only non-aspected spells seems super weak... This feela like it gives nothing to the rest id his magic, unlike when he first got Mage, if I remember correctly. I also find it weird that he either never inquired or we never saw it written that he did so about what the requirements are for Archmage. I _also_ find it weird that no profession offered gives even a half-point in Wisdom, a learning and/or information processing stat

Daniel McConville

Doesn't he have Death as well? And Water Aspect? Just not slotted?

Christopher Leland

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Explorer, seriously dont gas light our main character lol. Ya he wants to be one so be one. You dont need magic sub school for it. Plenty of non magic exploring skills out there. But surving combat not optional!!!! Combat will be under pressure, and contested skill vs skill will vs will no second chances with death on the line... wait that tent needs magically set up really really well.....

Kev

Please dont go explorer that so lame, he is already turning like a afraid and meek person and that start to be bad. Battlemage, he just said he want to be strong enough , mana explorer is just bad, would have been nice to have a epic arcane mage one, battle mage but with broad approach to all magic

Bereftreader

I was just thinking I would pick magic explorer after I reviewed all the class descriptions lol. Elemental mage was a close second though.

Halfcrzy

Bonus improvement to non aspected.. so none of his current elements get an increase? Is that right? That does feel kind of weak then. He is semi plateau'd on lightning and slowing down on life. So how does he still have his avenger title? He hasnt taken any major steps in years, and when given the choice he stems away from combat options. Honestly feels like he should lose it, since he mainly is just curious about mana.

D'landis of LAH

I like elemental mage more for its aspect based increases but increasing non-aspected mana understanding might be the more long term goal. Explorer also has the same number of apparent upgrade options available. Meh, both good but he would likely gain more from the non aspired knowledge. You're quite evil for presenting such a difficult choice; poor little Arien, suffering under the weight of your options! Love it though.

dxpt12

Finally caught up after a few days of reading. Perhaps this is an unpopular opinion but I cant wait for the academy arc to end. Its done well but at the same time I feel like it has turned into just another isekai with arrogant nobles, talented MC hiding his power, rich girl character who takes an unusual interest in the underdog MC etc etc. I guess I have isekai burnout lol The opening of the book though was great - I liked mysteries behind being Abyss touched. I liked the stories the adventurers shared about the academy girl getting cocky. I liked the sea adventures. Maybe its just isekai burnout but I cant wait for the exploration and adventuring to begin because I feel like I'll get to see the more unique aspects of the story that way. Either way great job so far and I am looking forward to the future chapters!

Joel

I’m kind of surprised there wasn’t anything rarer. But maybe the rare thing is getting the class advancement so early?

Ivan

Thanks for the chapter - the only reasonable choices were the explorer or the vengence ones - and the explorer says "dramaticly increase understanding" vs the vengence "increase understanding". The explorer is the right path if he want to be a pure mage and will even imporve his combat magic somewhat - which is a plus. Its the better of the two.

Xander

Thank you for the chapter and hurray for a bonus chapter!

forgotten mob

I think that kinda the problem this it feel like he had a arc that was really needed for this class that happend without us. I know time skip but time skip are normally there to get us to the important part not skip the important part. This just feel like he got the class he wanted without us seeing the work

Hellnhavoc

I’m not sure why but i wasn’t super excited about that one. I’m surprised no epic choices since he is such an outlier.
