Years late to say this, but yeah it's safe to assume that was Hawk's first time ever bottoming. His father walked in on him performing oral with his first love, which was a profound trauma, and Matt Bomer has somewhat confirmed in interviews that the shame and suffering associated with that memory is a big part of why he's so fixated on sexual domination as an adult. He seems to both be an exclusive top and also not even go down on his partners until Tim comes into his life. While I'm also not a huge fan of loud sex noises in my headphones (and as a lesbian I’m not particularly interested in the visuals beyond finding it very funny that they’re both “hours a day in a modern gym” buff in a show otherwise very dedicated to historical accuracy), I do enjoy trying to make the connections between the specific acts being shown and what they're meant to say about the overall storyline and the relationship at that point in time. In this case, he's letting Tim in in a way that he never did during their first fling-- he's envisioning a future for them, with regular meetings and a hideaway to call their own. This is a brief moment of vulnerability and openness for Hawk, and his choosing to bottom for the first time reflects that.
