I love how this show uses the fourth wall breaks. I don't think Phoebe Waller Bridge has ever publicly talked about what exactly she interpreted them as being when she wrote it but a common viewer interpretation is that it's Fleabag disconnecting from reality as an unhealthy coping mechanism, performing for an imaginary audience so she can disconnect from her feelings temporarily. I've also seen some people interpret it as her talking to the memory of Boo or talking to the audience in the same way as she would to Boo as she can't deal with her loss. They use it in a really interesting way in season 2.

I have watched so many UK shows over the years, and I will say it does get easier to understand the accents without subtitles after awhile. Using them does help a lot in the beginning tho lol.
