Currently uploading the Heartstopper Reactions to Google Drive. Will post AS SOON AS THEY ARE AVAILABLE! In the meantime, I wanted to give our Patrons a chance to share their favorite films to watch for PRIDE Month. One of my recent underrated discoveries is the 2020 film, "Straight Up" written by and directed by AND STARRING James Sweeney as a Queer man with OCD living in LA, struggling in MLM relationships only to find himself connected with Katie Findlay (who is NOT the ugly stepsister from "A Cinderella Story" SMH) who shares his eccentric sense of humor. Imagine Gilmore Girls meets Wes Anderson and you have a pretty good idea of this hidden gem. One of my favorites and can currently be streamed ON NETFLIX in the US. Comment below some of YOUR FAVORITE FILMS!

PS: Reaction requests WILL BE IGNORED/DELETED. Let's try and just share what makes US happy and let people naturally discover something new!

I know I’m kinda late to the party, but The Half of It by Alice Wu is genuinely one of the best movies I’ve ever seen

Chael

Korean film The Handmaiden, hands down.

Love that film! One of the stronger Netflix originals!

pinkpatreon

I've heard ALOT of good things. Looking forward to checking it out.

OMG that's the one with John Leguizamo, isn't it?

Lauren Sekelsky

It is! He plays a young drag queen who ends up on a cross country road trip with a couple other more experienced queens on their way to a pageant. They get stuck in a small town and hilarity ensues.

Lillian Lee

What immediately came to mind for me was a TV show, not a film (hope that’s ok!): “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay.” I don’t know that I’ve ever personally connected with a story more in my life. It explores a variety of different sexualities and relationships as well as featuring characters (and actors) on the spectrum.

I enjoyed Straight Up a lot. I loved the bond those two had. I think it reminds us how we're all looking for that instant connection. Tbh though, Heartstopper has been the only LGBTQ+ anything to make my heart melt. Not only did I fall in love with the characters but I liked how wholesome the show was. It didn't have to be rooted in tragedy like most LGBTQ+ stories. I liked how we got to follow Nick discover his natural feelings for a boy. Nick just wanted to be around Charlie all the time and how can that be wrong when it's so right!? 💕

Oh I saw the poster for that series! Looks awesome and that’s so cool to find something you genuinely connect to!!!

It was incredibly wholesome and that was such a welcomed breath of fresh air. I honestly think Straight Up fits in that category too! It has some drama and “tragedy” - but nothing more than your usual rom-com!

DriaZia

Agreed! I haven't watched Straight Up since it cane out though. 😄

I stumbled across a movie on Amazon a couple years ago called Uncle Frank. I only saw it the once but I thought it was really good.

Alexandra Calero

But I'm a Cheerleader, Kissing Jessica Stein, Pride, Before Night Falls, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Imagine Me and You, Outing Riley, Breakfast with Scot, Flawless

Fried Green Tomatoes. Unfortunately they made the movie in the time of No Homo Hollywood so they wouldn't let there be any actual physical intimacy, but I adore the story nonetheless. I'm trying to read the book which does have them be out and about lesbians but I can't get through it because it is Southern Cooking Porn and I can't get through a chapter without needing to go get cornbread, barbecue, buttered green beans, and a steaming heap of gravy smothered mashed potatoes.

My favourite is "shelter" 💗

Not really a film but a pro-shot of a musical. It’s called Falsettos. It’s a musical with a cast of just 7 people. It’s about a man who leaves his wife and son for another man, his psychiatrist who married his ex-wife and the lesbians from next door who are the godparents of his son. Incredibly flawed people who try to be one big happy family while planning a bar mitzvah. Okay, your description of Straight Up convinced me to watch it.

But I'm a Cheerleader, Pride, Dear Ex

quintennyson

I really loved the miseducation of cameron post, it was one that helped me with coming out and really hit home

Mars

My go to yearly pride watch is a Brazilian film called The Way He Looks.

Mark Harker

I prefer movies with a happy ending so Trick, Prom Queen and Big Eden are high on my list. Get Real does not exactly have as happy ending , but at least it not sad. Fried Green Tomatoes, Shelter, Latter Days, Kiss the Bride, Chicken Tikka Masala, The Wedding Banquet, Pricilla Queen of the Desert, History Boys, The Perfect Wedding, Fire Island, Make the Yuletide Gay and a dozen other gay themed holiday movies. and a little movie called Broadway Damage. The actors try hard and the intention was sweet, but it is not very good .

Book Smart is fantastic! Most are documentaries tho; Brothers Outsider, James Baldwin: The Price of The Ticket, Lorraine Hansberry: Sighted Eyes/Feeling Hearts, Major!, etc

pinkpatreon

LOVE Book Smart! Will have to check out the rest

I've heard that movie is SAD! lol but I wanna watch it!

Ashley Laduranteay

Oh no, it's got its sad moments but overall it's a happy film. I think both of you guys would really like it, and Kathy Bates is amazing in it. 10/10 highly recommend.

Would have to say Would have to say Maurice (1987) since I made a zine about it! It is based on novel by EM Forster and I would say ahead of its time with giving their gay protagonists a happy ending. same-sex relationships were still criminalized so he never tried to get it published during his lifetime. And yeah, kind of a lens into attitudes of the time! And also up there I'd say Hedwig and the Angry Inch - I see the character as non-binary tho at the time that lexicon wasn't around (director now says the same thing). there's also this untangling of sexuality and gender the main char has to do- I dunno, best that I can describe it!

Megan Sinarath

I like the movie, boy meets girl. It’s about a trans girl from a small town who strikes up a friendship with a rich cisgender girl who is engaged to a guy in the military and their relationship turns into something more. Meanwhile her hetero best friend (played by Michael Welch aka mike from twilight) has been secretly in love with her and it’s really sweet and cute and not very problematic except when it has to be (again the setting is small town America).

Walder Frey

If you haven't seen the documentary "Flee", it's an excellent film about a refugee escaping the Taliban. It's also a moving LGBTQ+ story. It's like watching an animated drama and I completely forgot that I was watching a documentary. It was nominated for a bunch of awards last year, including three Oscars (Animated, Documentary, International).

Silvern7552

One of my favorites is called "The Half of It" its a very well made netflix movie about growing up in a different culture somewhat as well as being gay.

Matthew Abel

Omg Trick and Big Eden, very yes!

Sarah.the.clumsy

I just found another Amazon origi al, it's new and it's called The Lake. Very funny

Rob Olivier

One of my favorite films is “A Beautiful Thing”. It’s from the UK and it is a sweet touching film, not unlike “Heartstopper”. Check it out if you can.
