####### EPISODE SPOILER REVIEW BELOW! APPARENTLY SOME OF YOU ARE WATCHING FOR THE FIRST TIME ALONG SIDE ME, SO PLEASE DON'T READ BEYOND THIS POINT UNTIL YOU HAVE SEEN THE EPISODE YOURSELF! ######

------

Hi guys!! Sorry this is late!

So the twist of the last two episodes have been 'it's just a coin'. XD

Good episode! It feels like the only real progression was the very brief Dawn and Joyce scene (which scared the hell out of me XD), but it was great to get more development between Riley and Buffy.

GRAHAM'S BACK!!!!!!!!!one

Riley... I kinda get what he is thinking, but he IS an idiot (IMO).

The surgeon may be the MVP of this episode! Genius!! XD

That last scene 100% GOT ME! XD I wonder if I was the only one?

Hope you guys are having a great weekend!

As always, if you click the video just after this post, you may need to  download it first.  This should be fixed in a couple of hours!

The actor who plays Xander played both parts in The Replacement , his twin only was in scenes where both are together, also Spike being in love with Buffy is part of his character arc

I feel like a lot of fans don’t like Riley and are pretty harsh with him, but I have a soft spot for him. I don’t know I guess I understand where he’s coming from and I don’t think his fears/insecurities are totally invalid. I don’t see it as him being disrespectful or insulting of Buffy. The twist at the end with Spike and Buffy gets me every time lol

Yknow Veggie, in the overall context of season 5 this might be my least favorite. And that is why I love watching reactors like you. It is great to share in your joy at this (IMO) dumpster fire of an episode 😂 I’m going to watch now, and I’m sure I’ll appreciate it anew!!! But seriously Riley….. what kind of stupid toxic macho crap is this????? (Part of the inspiration for Riley was Captain America - virtue and purity and American justice - and I guess that’s where the super-soldier idea came from.)

Was that four candles or fork handles?

I can understand Riley feeling a bit lost without a mission, when that had been his life for so long but mostly I just think he's a bit pathetic. I like Dawn in this episode, most of the time I find her annoying but she's quite adorable in this, with the way she was trying to be helpful. Oh Spike! I remember being shocked, a little disgusted but mostly disbelieving when I first saw it, years ago, I remember saying out loud "there's no way Buffy would do that" , and the person I watched with was "well clearly she is", and then it was a dream, and I gloated a bit. And then I felt kind of sorry for Spike.

I just love Harmony this episode. She is so funny. And concerning the French Revolution discussion between Buffy and Willow, I have to say that Robespierre wasn't so bad. A lot of his political enemies forged a black legend about him. And some of his former political allies put on him some of the exactions they did. If Robespierre ideas were followed back then, France may be a more tolerant and equal country today (even though, as a French man myself, I have to admit it's not so bad). Edit: I think Graham has a point though. Riley doesn't have anything in his life but Buffy. It is not a sane base for a relationship and not a good way to live your life...

The Replacement, since you're mentioning that in the beginning. Xander did go to Buffy, as Suave Xander. Since we are following the camera with Snoopy Xander and *his* POV, it's easy to feel frustrated that, "Hey, Xander, just go to Buffy and Giles!" It's easy to pass over the fact that Xander -- Suave Xander -- did indeed go to Buffy and Giles. Snoopy Xander also doesn't confront everyone at Giles' flat with his "replacement" being right there. Which would have cleared up the whole thing a lot faster, LOL. Well, or ended up with one being killed, so there's that. It makes perfect sense that Snoopy Xander would go to his lifelong comfort-buddy and security blanket, Willow. Even then, he is unsure she will believe him and very insecure. These are Xander's weak traits (and let's face it, we all have our insecurities). His reasoning power is also lessened, the more logical brain going to Suave Xander. The twist is fun, but seeing the magnified details of Xander's personality is fascinating.

Never seen such a big Graham fan! Very random. :)

I've always liked and been a defender of Dawn - I think she's way over-hated by some of the fandom and I've never heard a convincing argument against her. "She's annoying" is such a boring and shallow comment that I'm honestly so sick of hearing. She's a very compelling character in her own right and I'm glad you like her so much Veggie :) The scene with Joyce in the kitchen always gives me chills. I'm not a Riley hater by any means, but he frustrates the hell out of me sometimes. His insecurity and borderline martyr complex make it pretty hard to take his side. Do I think Buffy loves him as much as she loves Angel? No, but she still loves him in a different way. He's so wrapped up in his preconceived notions and unhealthy mindset that he's actively causing the problems that he's so afraid of. Spike...Spike, Spike, Spike. I know he's a fan-favourite, and up until this point I enjoy him for the most part (he's funny and charismatic and well-acted for sure), but this is the start of where I really begin to dislike his character. I won't go into it fully now, but this is the start of his decline for me. I'll admit that part of my reaction to him has been shaped over the years by some members of the fan base who refuse to acknowledge his very obvious flaws and treat him as a (to quote Harmony) "platinum baby" who can somehow do no wrong despite literally being a soulless monster. The amount of people who take Spike's side over Buffy's baffles me. As you say, I know it's a popular ship for some people, but the thought of them together and that last scene just makes me cringe. Unpopular opinion, sure, but I don't care. I was waiting for your reaction to Graham and you didn't disappoint lol - I cracked up when you saw him 🤣 Thanks Veggie!

Through that whole scene in the cave where Buffy is trying to get Riley to go to the surgeon... if she'd only said the words "I love you", it would have changed his whole outlook. But she's still never said it.

Paul Maki

I’m caught up with you! All in one month of patronage. I’m sticking around, Season 5 is my favorite!

Amanda Logsdon

Still on season 3 but I'm catching up fast love ur reactions can't wait till I get to season 5

Raven Dark

I love Dawn too. Literally my only problem with her is that she can be very immature. I know, she's supposed to be a little bit that way, but I mean too much even for a little sister who's supposed to get on Buffy's nerves. I did think she was annoying sometimes, but then I found out she was supposed to be written as a 12 year old. They cast Michelle Tractenburg (sp?), and made her a little older to match, but then they didn't rewrite the characterization to fit an older Dawn. Suddenly the kind of whiny, immature thing makes more sense, and I give it more of a pass because it's a casting/writing glitch, I guess you might say. But outside of that, I love her, and even the immaturity didn't bother me enough to interfere with liking the show, or Dawn. There is almost an irrational level of hate for her in the fandom sometimes, and it drives me up the wall.

See, Riley's already "toxic". People take huge issue with his being a masculine man. He's not toxic. He's a man whose a soldier and who isn't afraid to admit those things. That's just not something that's acceptable these days. Riley doesn't have anything in Sunnydale, and it's not who he is. What's he supposed to stay for? A woman who he knows doesn't love him and nothing else? Also, he doesn't trust doctors after all the crud he went through with Walsh and those doctors who poisoned him.

FandomReferenceHere

Well, the part I think is toxic is that he lies about his health and refuses to go to the doctor, that he has had an issue in the relationship for weeks (months?) and hasn’t brought it up with Buffy, and that he seems to be making Buffy responsible for him feeling adrift and purposeless. I love that Riley is a traditional manly-man soldier, but he’s been cheating on Buffy with vampires rather than have a conversation about whether or not the relationship is still working for both of them. That feels pretty toxic to me. I completely agree about Riley needing more in his life! Being “just one of the Scoobies” was never going to be enough identity for him; he needs a mission of his own and truly I’m glad he finds one. But I just can’t stand how he never even tries to talk to Buffy about how he doesn’t feel truly loved in the relationship…. dude, we could have fixed this with wayyyyy less drama if you’d spoken up earlier, but you were too busy feeling hurt that Buffy wasn’t relying on you in the way that you wanted. Lol, sorry, got off track there. I think S4 Riley is great, but in S5 for some reason they wrote him with the emotional intelligence of a toaster oven. Just my opinion, of course, and I love that we both love this show 😊

FandomReferenceHere

True, but Riley still hasn’t told Buffy that he needs to hear it. Sure, sure, it should be a given, but Riley has gotten himself so worked up over this that he’s going to vampire hookers. Surely somewhere before that you have a conversation with your SO and tell them the words are important and you want to hear them? I’d never noticed before watching reactions that Buffy had never said the L-word back. And I do agree that Buffy probably doesn’t “love Riley back” in the way that he needs — but she THINKS she does. She’s giving Riley what she has to give. Sorry, I’m just at the stage of my fandom where I’m really compelled to point out that Riley never told Buffy he needs to hear “I love you” from her. THAT could have solved the whole thing earlier too!

When I watched the last scene for the first time, I didn't have my glasses on... You know what I saw? Spike waking up in a bed with a blonde girl. And for years I thought it was Buffy :D It took me years until I rewatched the whole show and I found out, that it was Harmony

Mo

I loved your reaction to Spike's dream, the befuddlement was valid! I only recently realized the importance of this dream happening after he failed to get rid of the chip/kill her again. It's like a subconscious strategy shift. Also loved how defensive of Buffy you were, you're right, Riley was insulting her by saying he wouldn't be enough.

Thom Purdy

SPOILER! You're talking about things not yet in evidence!

Eric Hunter

Note that when Buffy finds Riley in the Initiative cave, Buffy tells Riley, "I need you.", rather than "I love you!". Much of BtVS fandom insist that Riley is Toxic Masculinity personified, but he's just a man who is head-over-heels in love with a woman who won't say that she loves him. That is the root of the Ruffy problem.

Frederique Gillespie

Hiya Veggie, This episode showcases very well why I'm a fan of Season 4 Riley, but less so of Season 5 Riley. What, suddenly he's all insecure because Buffy won't actually say the words "I love you"? Are we really supposed to believe he's that shallow? That he hasn't known her for over a year now? Who is he so in love with if he doesn't know her better than that? And, honestly, how dare he lay all of that at Buffy's door. Like, if only she did this, he'd be alright. It's either where he wants to be or it isn't. That choice has nothing to do with her. Great reaction as always. I loved your reaction to Spike's dream. And I share your love of Harmony. She's really special, isn't she? I can't wait to see your reaction to what's coming. At some point, though, we're gonna get nearer to the episode you've already seen. How much of a warning do you want to have on that? Because the comments on here usually respect your desire to avoid spoilers. But, if you want to avoid that episode, we're gonna have to spoil you at some point. That's up to you, of course. Just wanted to check in case you'd rather we tell you before you get a nasty surprise, you know? Love to Woozle, Freddie
