Hi guys! Here is the next part of the Goblet of Fire Book Review, and we yet again have some cracking chapters!!

I.... LOVE the misunderstanding between the Merpeople and Harry! I actually feel really bad for them! They were probably having such a lovely day until Harry starts swinging his wand! XD

Black's stuff here is SO good. I think this may be my favourite scene of his so far! The context of Crouch really add so much to his character, and the further mystery.

As always, we have some amazing discussions in the Book Club! Weirdly, I get through it pretty fast, so I hope I didn't miss anyone (I know already I missed someone that DM'd me, so we will be starting the next episode with their comment ((SO SORRY, IF YOU ARE READING THIS))). As we have a bit of time at the end, I open another of Dara's amazing boxes! Some incredible stuff inside!

Thank you all so much for being a part of these videos, guys! I look forward to reading your comments on the next chapters! :)

yay 5 points off is only one point per judge. there are 5 judges, giving scores out of 10. so, Krum got the minimum deduction from each judge (on average). i do not thing it is prejudges agents the merpeople. it is Harry took the song seriously as noted by Ron.

Lydia57

Happy Friday ✨ thank you for posting today. Needed some magical good vibes 💕

VeggieGamer

Thanks, Garfnob! Didn't Krum get 40? Wouldn't that be 2 points off each? It is Harry that gets 45. unless I misunderstand what you mean, sorry!

Katik

Yay, a Friday treat! Like your head cannon Veggie about Flitwick teaching the summoning and then banishing spell because of Harry's first task - but unfortunately it wasn't that cool in the book. If you remember they were learning the summoning charm before Harry's first task - that's how Harry thought about it so quickly, he'd just been rubbish at it in class up to the point he realised that's what he needs to do to get Firebolt - then he starts the extra training with Hermione. But it had been on the syllabus already. On Animagi vs human transfiguration - I think the boring answer might be that it's one of the many plotholes. But if we want to pretend that's not the case and everything makes sense in this world, this is my best understanding: transfiguration is something you can perform on yourself but it is still kind of external. You definitely need a wand and a spell for it and I would guess it has temporary effects. If not, someone needs to change you back, as while you're transfigured into an animal you can't use a wand and cast a spell to transfigure back. Becoming an Animagus is an extremely difficult, dangerous and time-consuming process which kind of changes the person from within so that instead of casting a spell they can change at will, without a wand. Remembering Sirius in the last book describing his experience in the Azkaban - while he was being a dog his essence changed to the point that Dementors didn't have as much effect on him. He would have definitely not been able to achieve the same effect with transfiguration. (And he couldn't have done that anyway as he didn't have a wand on him in prison) Thinking of The Marauders initially though, why did they not just learn transfiguration - I'm not sure if the above answers that? But I guess it might have been the duration of the transfiguration spell or inability to undo it once you're transfigured into an animal - I guess it didn't fit with what they needed it for? No idea if that's the real answer, just me thinking out loud!

rreowenn

I think with regards to animagi and transfiguration, the process of becoming an animagi is difficult and long but once completed you can easily and quickly turn into an animal without a wand. With transfiguration, it might be quicker and you get to choose what to turn into but there is more chance of it going wrong and it might require more concentration with each transformation. Furthermore, if you transfigured yourself fully (into a shark for example) you would probably not be able to use a wand to turn back, meaning you would have to rely on others or non-verbal magic. (correct me if wrong)

Tiegan

I think being an animagus is just more convenient since it’s a permanent skill you learn and can do as much as you like while transfiguration requires difficult spells and uses up energy. And I’m not sure if this is true or not but I’ve always understood it as: when an animagus transforms they are actually, fully becoming that animal while keeping their human mind but with transfiguration they’re just changing the way their body looks but on a biological level they’re still human. So if the marauders just transfigured themselves they’re still human enough to risk getting bit by werewolf Remus but an animagus as a full animal doesn’t have to worry about it. Could be wrong though so I’ll consider that my headcanon 😂 Also yes, an animagus form and patronus can be the same animal but not always. McGonagall’s patronus is also a cat though 😸

Garfnob

i just went by what i heard you state. i thought you said Krum get 45, i did not check. still an average of 2 is not that much. i am sure Karkaroff gave him 10, and Malkin gave a low score. no one made it back in time, but Harry would have it he got Ron and left.

VeggieGamer

Oh it is best to not go on what I say, I get things wrong all the time, as you know! I am pretty sure I say that Krum didn't make it in time, in fact I don't think anyone did, hence why Cedric didn't get 50. I believe the score are as followed - Ced - 48 Harry - 45 Victor - 40 Fleur - 25 Hope that helps!

S1lm4r1l

Human Transfiguration requires great skill to do properly, which is partly why Krum struggled with it. He's presumably been practicing for weeks and still mucked it up. Animagi can turn into and back at will without effort. Although the process of becoming one is extremely long-winded. Animagi protects them for Lupin's Lycanthropy. He cannot infect them if they are transformed. The assumption is that Human Transfiguration does not prevent Lycanthropy. My headcanon has always assumed that something greater was going on than simple changing body parts to look like something different. Animagi are changing their own fundamental essence in a way that inhibits Lycanthropy. Lycanthropy is a similar process, but driven not by agency but by the cycles of the moon. Even when he is not transformed, Lupin is frequently described as gaunt and grey. This is neither the time nor the plaice for fish puns Veggie. (Not sorry) I'm reading Orient Express now, having already read Death on the Nile. (Which is excellent btw.) Yes I read them out of order.

Garfnob

yep. i think at the start you stated different but after the tack you give the proper list. i was commenting as i go. i should hold off until the end :(

Dara Jeeling

good morning and happy weekend. We're going back to Hogwarts, the Hogwats express leaves September 1st. So yay thank you for the gift! Transfiguration is a dificult subject. It's easier if the object you want to transfigure is closer in look into the thing you ant it to be. human transfiguraten is not thought at Hogwarts before year 6 or so. Also... I think you need a wand to transfigure and retransfigure. Which means you'd either have to rely on a friend/relative to transfigure you back or use wnadless and wordless magic and both are tricky as hell as well. To become an Animagus you have a LOT of steps to complete starting with havong a Mandrake leaf in your mouth for a month (without swallowing or chewing it) and brewing a complicated potion. You need a tunderstorm to hit the potion at the right time and need to learn a spell. You can not choose your Animagi form it's given to you randomly: but then the few of the animagi we see (like Mc Gonagall and Sirius) have their animagi form and their patronus match. And you have to register to the ministry of magic with your special markings (Like Mc Gonagalls spectacle shaped forms around your eyes). so what the Marauders do is actually a crime. We do not meet a lot of Animagi since therer are restrictions and it is incredibly hard. Also makes me wonder why people assue Peter Pettigrew is not good as magic. He managed it and many more "skilled" wizards and witches did not do it. So no choice and thinking about it it might have been reasonable Harry s Animagi form would also have been a stag which would not help at all. about the Merepeople (and Goblins as well) they are not allowed wands and it's clear that a lot of the other human like secies are afraid of what wizards can do with wands. fast forward - I did not remember everything we ut into that box. I have another n between lying here, since the Goblet one is still to early and would have spoilers XD Actually have two in betweens - one nearly ready and one I am done with, Just need to get my lazy arse to a UPS XD Also... once I get to the Tour this year I will buy the gift tickets there. No idea why they will let my buy my tickets online and not a gift ticket (or two) for you. *sigh* I am selfish - I want to see a blog of you at the tour, I know you would enjoy this a lot.

Rod

Hey Veggie - I understand you're following two chapters per video now, but you should consider have 32, 33 and 34 as one video. Those chapters are much shorter than the rest, and the three are interconnected in a way it would be weird to split them.

Alias93

I see a lot of people have commented on the transfiguration/animagus thing, so I will not add to it. However I have one point to bring up about animagus form vs patronus: I wouldn't say a person's patronus is ''what they are'', more like ''what their guardian/protector is''. Harry's is a stag, not because Harry himself is represented by a stag, but because his father, his protector, was (in some way) a stag. Of course your animagus form could be the same as your patronus, but I don't think it would be the case most of the time. About Fleur's outfit during the task: she was actually wearing her robes like Harry the whole time, since at the end it is said her robes were torn, presumably by the grindylows. Guess they didn't tell the students to bring swimwear as well as dress robes at the start of the year... The time limit was probably there to make sure the champions would not take too long to get their hostage back, maybe the spell that kept them asleep underwater was limited in time and they would have needed to be taken out of the lake if their champion took too long? Also since no one in the stands could see what was going on, it would have been boring to have to wait for hours and hours for the champions to get back, and they probably wanted to make sure everything was wrapped up before lunch... And finally, there IS an easy way for wizards to go underwater: the bubble-head charm, which Cedric and Fleur used. It might even be considered so obvious that this is the reason why it's never mentionned in the books Harry & co were reading...

Alias93

I guess your point still stands if you consider that Krum got points deducted for two things: messing up the transfiguration AND being late/2nd place. So if each judge takes out 2 points, then he does end up with 40 points. As for Harry getting top marks, when he got to Ron and freed him he had done everything perfectly and was still on time, so if he had left then he would have been first, within the 1 hour limit, and as such would have gotten 50/50 (in theory, Karkaroff would probably have taken out some points for ''showing up late'' at the start or whatever). He only got 3rd place and was late because he decided to stay and make sure everyone got ''saved''. As such, they probably decided to award him part of the points that would be deducted for being late in 3rd place (let's say he would have gotten 35-40 points, and they added 5-10 points). I agree with Veggie that giving him 50/50 would have been a little too much, but 45 seems reasonable when the only thing he ''messed up'' was misunderstanding the level of danger the ''hostages'' were in.

S1lm4r1l

It is possible that the Bubble-head charm is on the Syllabus, but that Harry and Co aren't old enough to have learnt it yet.

Alias93

Yeah that's a possibility, especially since a lot of people were using it the next year (but maybe it was brought back in popularity after its use in the second task?). Then again, you would expect Hermione to have at least read about it, I doubt she hasn't taken a look at the entire curriculum to prepare in advance, we know she mastered stuff that's only studied in 6th and 7th years.

S1lm4r1l

I want to 2nd this idea. You really cannot split up these chapters.

S1lm4r1l

Lupin does say in Book 6 that "spells do go in and out of fashion". I'm paraphrasing obviously. All the evidence suggests she's been looking ahead to what they have to do next.

S1lm4r1l

I'm 99% sure they became Animagi in order to prevent Lupin infecting them.

Embran

Pettigrew was taught by the other Marrauders (likely with endless patience) and eventually able to it. Fudge claimed that being surrounded by brilliant students helps. Same way someone like Neville being able to conjure a tangible Patronus under Harry´s tutelage, something that apparently many grown ups struggle to be able to - remember Harry´s trial where the interrogators were shocked by it?)

Alias93

I guess that would also allow to spend more time on the book recap in the last book club since there would only be one chapter at the end instead of two. But I suppose it's for Veggie to decide.

Embran

I think Veggie you´re forgetting that everyone had someone dear to them kept under water. So if Cedric´s attitude was as you described, I feel would not be in character towards Cho who he loved. Seeing them tied up there (way worse in movie) should still be mentally scarring to him as well. Contest or not. And Cedric being lost can just be because of a misty dark lake even beneath where you easily lose sense of direction. I don´t think he went there before - too risky. Sure the giant squid helps you out sometimes, but the Grindylows and likely unseen other dangerous creatures make me doubt any human easily goes in there. Krum experimenting as a shark is doable I guess. Plus The merpeople the top of the food chain in the lake keeping it safe for the day of second trial. Months on end would be too much i feel.

Annette Elliott

Transfiguring into something is a temporary spell and you can choose something different each time you do it. Once you become an anamagi you are always an anamagi and it's always the one animal. The merpeople are friendly with Dumbledore..not necessarily with the Ministry.

Neellohit Basu

Wait hold on, what exactly do you think happens to children conceived using love potion? The movies don't say anything about that. You might be stepping into non-canon stuff here!

Jo Winters

These chapters are getting so good!

Jo Winters

It is a bit like that. Basically what was said is this: 'Ravleen: How much does the fact that Voldemort was conceived under a love potion have to do with his non-ability to understand love is it more symbolic J.K. Rowling: It was a symbolic way of showing that he came from a loveless union – but of course, everything would have changed if Merope had survived and raised him herself and loved him..' So, it's not such a stiff rule, since if the mother would have survived it would be changed and affected.

Neellohit Basu

"symbolic" being the operative word here. It's the opposite of literal

Inseriousity

Your reaction about the merpeople is interesting particularly the laughter bit because the way I interpreted that scene is that the merpeople were told to act menacing and it was only revealed once Harry got to the surface that they were more friendly than they had pretended. As for the time limit it was just a ruse to get the contestants to hurry. You can sort of see how these tasks have been set up to be challenging but the more dangerous risks that could lead to death have been reduced.

Simon audsley

Kind heats and coronets is one of the classic British black comedies and a great showcase of alec guinness acting talent's it is no spoiler to say that he plays seven characters as it's in the credits. The allocation of points in the task makes sense if you consider that the evaluation is based on performance as well as speed and they will be taking into account that if harry had not stayed behind he would have likely won the task. Also it's pretty lucky we are where we currently are in the story as it would have raised awkward questions from Ron as to why harry was tasked with rescuing ginny.

Alias93

I mean Ginny would only have been picked as Harry's hostage after they started dating publicly, so Ron would have known about it.

Simon audsley

Possibly but harry does start having feelings for ginny before they date so it would have been an embarrassing predicament if the second task had outed his deeper feelings prematurely, would personally find it amusing if harry was stood there awkwardly saying to Ron " look mate I've no idea why I had to rescue you sister honestly".

Simon audsley

oops forget to point out in my earlier post that how did we get throug the book club without someone mentioning the idiom the pot calling the kettle (sirius) black. And also you were going on about teachers and behaviour, my high school had one teacher whose wife turned up in the middle of his class and dumped all his clothes on the floor, another teacher who punched a student and faced no punishment and an old school science teacher who was brilliant, that when break came after a lesson on evaporation me and my friend stayed behind to ask some questions about the subject and he spent the break period teaching us how to make a still for making hooch, the plans for which are still in my science workbook to this day, this was mid 90's so I was about 14 at the time.

Alias93

Oh that's an interesting way to look at it, you mean that the "hostages" were chosen by an independant and kind of omniscient source, like the goblet chose the champions? I personally thought that they had been picked by the organizers, possibly the judges, based on what they knew about the champions. I don't think it was an accident that this task happened after the yule ball.

Caroline

Hi Veggie :) Great Episode!! I think you need to distinguish a little more precisely between the levels of magic, otherwise, it will only confuse you. 😉 The magic is much more complex. Just because a spell is there doesn't mean that everyone can use it the same way. We see how difficult it is for students to transform something small into a simple object. So you can imagine how far they are from turning into animals without putting themselves in great danger of something going wrong. From the lessons, we also learn that it is not enough just to say a magic spell, but that there is also a lot of imagination and concentration behind it. Otherwise, the students wouldn't have to practice. I think Krum was just strong enough to turn into a shark for one hour, but with difficulties. We know how incredibly complex it is to become an Animagus and that there are only about 4 registered ones in the whole of England. If you are an Animagus, it means that you can transform into a certain animal for the rest of your life and at any time without having to perform a complicated spell. It's as if half of your soul becomes the animal. This seems to have quite serious consequences for one's own life and most wizards might not want that at all. Dumbledore or Voldemort, for example, would have been powerful enough to do it but obviously chose not to. For all other people, there are certainly various transformation spells to turn into an animal, but they are probably very complicated, dangerous, or don't last long. I think with most spells you always have to consider how well they work and how powerful the person casting them is. That all influences the end result. For example, we also learn that adult magicians specialize in specific areas of magic and are particularly good at that. Lockhart, for example, was stupid but apparently better at memory spells than others. Or maybe Molly isn't that good at combat magic but can do spells that help her around the house. And yes, all wizards have a patronus, which has nothing to do with the Animagus ability. A Patronus is a spell to protect you. I think it is confusing because both are connected to an animal form. JK tried to reflect the character of a certain person in an animal. That this is consistent with both the Animagus and Patrons is logical, I think, but not necessarily a must. We just don't know of any other counterexamples. It's just established that a cat fits Mac Gonnagal and a dog fits Sirius's character. If both had a parrot and a butterfly as patrons all of a sudden, I think that would confuse a lot of people, even though it would be possible. We learn about very few Patroni in the books because the spell is so complicated and only very powerful wizards can create an animal form of it, otherwise, it's just like a light mist. Omg and I'm so annoyed with Harry in general (that's a different topic) but here in particular: the fact that he is so naive that he thinks that the whole tournament is dangerous and that the others would have drowned if he hadn't rescued them from the lake is so stupid. It's basically a school tournament in the form of a trash TV survival show. His job was to bring ONE person to the surface. Nobody really needed to be rescued. The focus of the task was on their magical abilities and speed. 🤦🏽‍♀️ If one of them could not be saved because the champion did not complete the task, they would have simply been taken out of the water and nothing would have happened. We find out in advance that the whole ministry and the teachers are involved in the preparations. It's supposed to look exciting and dangerous on the outside but of course, everything is secured behind the scenes. Not even wizards are that incompetent. I think that everyone knows that except Harry. 😂

Katie

I think it's heavily implied in the books that Dumbledore's patronus is a phoenix cause at the end of this book he sends his to Hagrid as a message and it's described as a ghostly bird. The only bird that would make sense would be a phoenix

Caroline

oh, ok thanks! ☺️ all the sources i have found have never quoted a specific book chapter but only other articles. I have corrected it above 👍🏻

S1lm4r1l

Harry's feelings about Ginny only really begin after he loses interest in Cho. I think the Heads of the schools picked the hostages. Naturally Karkaroff picked Hermione for Krum. She's not one of his students and he probably keeps a close eye on Krum. Ensuring he has to save the love of his life provides a special incentive to do well.

Katie

The scene where Snape reads out the magazine article in front of the whole class takes me back to something similar happening to me at school. I was nine and I was going out with a boy in the year above. I had a diary and I'd been writing in it about my feelings for him. I was always away with the fairies and left my diary lying around in the playground. We had an assembly for the whole school and the headmaster brought out my diary and then asked whose it was. He then proceeded to read out the latest entry as mentioned above and then loads of kids turned to look at me and started pointing, identifying me as the owner of the diary. I still remember the out of body feeling I had in that moment and how even now I hate any attention given to me. I've also never had a diary since. As an adult I can't believe he thought it was a good idea to read out my diary to the entire school. Many of Snape's scenes also remind me of how I was treated by another teacher at the same school who taught me for four years. She would belittle me when I got maths questions wrong and I remember one time she made me sit in the corner facing away from the rest of the class. Thankfully, after the diary incident, my parents transferred me to a different primary school, which had no problematic teachers. Because of how I was treated by that teacher, I really sympathise with Neville and how he is treated by Snape. I still remember the feelings of dread I had when going to school and Neville must have felt that way too, except he couldn't leave the castle and go home every day. Anyway, sorry I ended up writing an essay. I think I needed to write this out. Keep up the great work Veggie. Been catching up on the last few of these videos in a surprisingly short space of time. I chuckle every time you say 'Dumbledore said calmly' at every opportunity 🤣

Katie

I'm wondering if Veggie might see the mention of patronuses being used as messages as being a spoiler as that hasn't been confirmed in the books yet?

Ashley Evers

I think that the reason that Harry gets such high marks for this task is because he *would* have been back within the time limit if he hadn’t taken the instructions literally. I tend to agree with you that giving him full marks would have been wrong, since taking the other champions ‘hostages’ would have been unfair for them. But I also think you are being unfair to Harry. I think that most of the judges realized that his misunderstanding was their fault. The wording of the clue was not vague, it specifically said they wouldn’t be able to get back what was taken from them if they failed. They realized it was unfair to dock Harry for believing they meant what they said. It’s also possible that the other judges realized that Karkaroff was going to dock him *more* than was fair, so the others gave him full marks to make it even out. I actually think it might be a bit hasty to assume that because Dumbledore is friendly with a group of people, that that means that the Wizarding world in general knows that they are chill and friendly. Dumbledore specifically has a habit of befriending people who are not seen as safe or friendly by most people. I don’t know for sure, but Ron never mentions that mer people are cool despite knowing the task, and Fleur doesn’t seem like she really believed her sister was safe. And he wasn’t showing ‘moral fiber’ in some random way unrelated to the task. He specifically couldn’t finish the task because he couldn’t morally allow the other ‘hostages’ to die so that he could win at a game. Obviously, Krum wouldn’t have gotten extra points for stopping to help a puppy during the Dragon task, but he did get points docked for allowing some of the eggs to be crushed. That wasn’t specifically mentioned as part of the objective of the task, but he got less points because he wasn’t careful enough to not do harm in his attempt to win. Also, I think it’s actually cool that Harry only gets there first because he’s been polite (not even nice really, just polite) to Myrtle. It’s so obvious that almost no one bothers to be kind to her. It is very much in line with the themes of these books that treating Myrtle like a person pays off. Also, he did give ‘her a thumbs up to show his thanks’, because he literally couldn’t talk. Finally, I’m not sure that “I can see a real teacher doing that” is actually an argument that means that behavior is definitely okay. Plenty of real teachers do things that are completely out of line. I agree that Snape was well within his rights to punish the group for not paying attention in class, but I really do think at some point while reading the article, he crossed the line from reasonable response into deeply inappropriate.

Ирина Устюгова

Being an Animagus saved Sirius' life in Azkaban. Transfiguration would have been useless since he didn't have a wand. It seems like Transfiguration has its limits and most likely wears off over time. An Animagus can transform into an animal using his will and for many years (Pettigrew). Sirius also mentioned that his thoughts became "simpler" when he was a dog. Perhaps the Animagus transformation affects the very essence of a person. Presumably, Transfiguration only changes the form, but the essence remains the same. Therefore, you can transfigure into inanimate objects (submarine), but an Animagus will always transform into something alive.

H

I agree with that Rod said earlier here: "Hey Veggie - I understand you're following two chapters per video now, but you should consider have 32, 33 and 34 as one video. Those chapters are much shorter than the rest, and the three are interconnected in a way it would be weird to split them." I've thought the same myself. I would add one thing to that: Chapter 35 would easily have enough for one video. If you combine chapter 35 with another chapter, I suspect it would end up being seven or eight hours! So my suggestion: do 32, 33 and 34 as one video. Then do 35 as one video. And then end it with 36 and 37 as one video. I know you (Veggie) can't know if I'm right here since you don't even know what chapter 35 is, so maybe you could ask someone else if they agree about that way of doing it.

Mary

I’m at the scoring of the second task and I think the important thing to note is that it was BAGMAN who said everyone wanted Harry to get full marks… he was trying his best to make Harry win

Jacqueline Chaiton

Very excited to hear you’re going to do the hunger games movies! I do think you should read the books after, the same way you did movies first for HP so when you do see the stuff that was changed/cut for the movies you’ll still have an appreciation for them. There aren’t as many and they aren’t as long as the HP books so that’s good too!

K

There's really no indication that all of wizarding society has a great relationship with merpeople and knows they're perfectly harmless. There's a lot of things that suggest otherwise in this chapter, like Fleur and Percy being terrified for their siblings, and the fact that the whole school sees this task as frightening and takes Ron's stories seriously! The only real information we get here is that Dumbledore gets along with these particular merpeople. We don't know anything about the civilization as a whole and their overall relationship with wizards and magic. We know that wizards have pretty ignorant attitudes towards a lot of different magical species. We've also seen other species like centaurs and giants who have their own societal rules and can be quite dangerous to humans as a result, while also being capable of having friendly/romantic relationships with humans. It seems that everyone takes the hostage thing very literally aside from Dumbledore, who is the one with the personal relationship.
