Haha, this one completely got me! XD Never saw that twist coming!

This was an excellent episode! It was cool finally seeing Dawn being Dawn without the rest of the gang, all be it not ending very well for her.

The last couple of scenes was so powerful. I really get the feeling that things are heading towards a complete meltdown in the group! Some really good subtle lines, as well as Buffy just being like "talk to Dawn thanks bye" to Giles! XD I can definitely feel the temperature rising in the group!

I definitely think that’s the worst thing Willow has done so far, there are enormous ethical ramifications to making someone forget they are mad at you. It’s essentially denying her free will in the relationship. I agree the decorations didn’t seem that bad, but I guess it’s supposed to tell us that Tara has noticed this pattern before and correctly predicted that it is starting to go too far. It’s interesting seeing how we are supposed to feel like Buffy should be stepping up and is using Giles to avoid things she should be doing. But then I think, she’s only 20. That is so young to expect her to be able to raise a teenager or deal with home ownership or any of this. They need to talk about it for sure, but she really does need help.

Well, actually, Veggie...XD To compare what Willow did to the real world: imagine you deliberately drugged someone into having memory issues, so they are unable to remember what happened. And then you continued to be romantic with them. Is that morally, ethically, or legally, right? It's at this point the Willow I loved was lost to me. Which is, needless to say, reason #3 I don't like this season.

Wrapping presents in wrapping paper or putting them in gift bags is "wrapping". Someone at a store putting things you bought in a bag is "bagging". Dawn wouldn't have been able to get a tattoo, anyway. You can't get one in CA until 18, even if your parent gives permission. I used to love Willow but really can't stand her at this point. I feel like these writers really like to do character assassination because they seem to do it with almost everyone.

(Veggie: please don't read. Will elaborate spoiler-free in a later episode.) The writing sends very mixed messages. Makes magic comparable to drugs (especially evident in 6x10) but says it's okay in the right circumstances and in moderation (Season 7)? That's not how hard drugs work.

If the writing for Willow these last few episodes is considered character assassination, then I’m a fan of it too.

Turning a character that is extremely beloved to most fans into one that a huge number of those same fans really really dislike is character assassination. Willow was loved, and they completely changed her into this. You can like her all you want, but so many people have issues with what she has become and for good reason. She herself in this episode even completely insulted her former self that was the self people loved. It's just sad.

i'm sorry but if giles expects buffy to be the slayer he needs to pick up some slack with dawn. it should just be the expectation that if a slayer has a dependent their watcher helps them out. it should ESPECIALLY be the case if this dependent was not one the slayer signed on for and their watcher, idk, loves them? and giles says he does. i mean come the fuck on, if two extremely busy and broke college students are happy to do what they can then what's your excuse? and why the fuck did you leave those broke and busy college students with a hellmouth, a child, and no source of income?? buffy is barely out of what he thinks was YEARS of torture and giles is discontented that she needs him to help out with disciplining. that is so unbelievably selfish it's insane. (while we're talking selfish, let me once again say that HE WAS GOING TO LET TARA AND WILLOW RAISE DAWN ON THEIR OWN) his literal only job rn is to help buffy, why can't he idk, WORK for the salary he is keeping so tellingly to himself?

Fair enough if you dislike her now, but I wouldn’t call it character assassination since this has been building for a long time now, including her hatred for her former self.

I will fully admit my take on the Giles, Buffy, Dawn situation is probably heavily influenced by my age, but clinical depression symptoms aside, Buffy is an adult and she is Dawn's primary carer. Remember Dawn's words to Buffy on the tower when Buffy was first resurrected? When she spoke about how much she had tried, and how hard it was without Buffy. Dawn doesn't want or need a substitute parent figure, she needs Buffy to step up. That Buffy isn't capable of doing that at the moment speaks volumes to how difficult mental health issues were to talk about, in a very real world context, even back in the early 2000s (honestly you'd think we would've at least made some more progress by then). As for Willow, I know a lot of people think season 6 destroys her character, at least from what we've seen so far. I think season 6 Willow is a very natural progression of her character from at least season 3.

I agree with you about Willow's character progression, over the last season we've seen her become a powerful witch and, well, there are a couple of well known sayings about power!

Sorry I didn't quite finish my previous comment, I ran out of energy (currently laid up with a stomach virus the night before Christmas, wonderful). I absolutely agree that Willow's memory spell is the worst thing she's done, in a long list of bas things that Willow has done. I've always seen people arguing that season 6 arbitrarily destroys Willow's character, and honestly the first thing that comes to mind when I hear that is, "Are we even watching the same show?" I love Willow, I will never not love Willow, her and Giles are two of my absolute favourite characters in any TV show ever. Having said that I also love that their complex characters, with darkness and flaws. This is Willow we're talking about: the same Willow that rather vindictively tricked Cordelia into deleting her entire work in season 1 (you can argue she deserved it, but it still showed Willow has a capacity to not always be the good girl); the same Willow that sneaks magic texts Giles says she's not ready for; the same Willow that blows out the town's energy supply attempting a spell she wasn't ready for; the same Willow that immediately resorts to magic to try and end her semi relationship with Xander, whilst straight up lying to Xander about her intent until she gets caught out; the same Willow that then attempts to barrel her way through fixing things with Oz until Oz has to basically tell her he knows what she's doing and it's not his problem; the same Willow who decides to perform a dark spell with someone she barely knows, and ends up summoning a dangerous doppelganger of herself, all because she was feeling upset at people seeing her as reliable; the same Willow that screams "I'm not your sidekick" at Buffy, gets shirty with people questioning her use of magic, and then proceeds to attempt a spell that goes wrong; the same Willow who's first idea to deal with Oz's infidelity is to come close to placing a very dark hex on both Oz and Veruca; the same Willow who claims she could have made Oz stay with her if she had any real power, and who then proceeds to put herself and her friends at risk with her 'do as I will' spell; the same Willow that almost ends up getting Joyce resurrected as a zombie by pointing Dawn in the direction of a certain book, and then straight up lies about it to Tara; the same Willow that essentially goes on a potential suicide mission against a hell god, and lies about her intention to Buffy. That Willow, that's who we're talking about? Yeah her behaviour in season 6 so far is so out of leftfield I have no idea where it came from, except for all of those other times that were clearly leading up to it.

Just to clarify, the whole witch aspect isn't the reason at least I don't like Willow anymore. She's become selfish, manipulative, lazy (fixing everything with magic instead of just putting effort in), etc. Her personality is what I don't like.

Merry christmas, Veggie !! Hope you and Woozle have a wonderful holiday <3 I don't have too much to say about this episode that hasn't already been said, though .. I feel like i'm somewhat in the minority with Willow- I've always had a bone to pick with her, so her flaws being put under the microscope in these episodes is equal parts satisfying and frustrating. It's a small detail, but I like that Spike continues to spice up his blood with yet another ingredient (we've been told about quite a few so far !) And the Xander stuff is just really hard to watch IMO. It's painfully realistic to be overwhelmed by the reality of taking such a huge step (especially when it's made "more real" by telling everyone in your life about it ).. But god it's rough. In a way I'm glad Anya didn't really clock any of it- Xander visibly deflating and disconnecting so much is such a heartbreaking reaction to what I would've hoped would bring him so much joy :(

I don't think the season destroys Willow's character, but I do think there is a case of mixed metaphors (that's all I can say without spoilers) that devalues the character evolution.

When this episode rolls around I'm always left wondering how often Willow has performed this spell on Tara that we haven't seen. Because she had plenty of the flower/herb at the ready, and knew what to do right away. It makes me wonder whether she used a spell on her to get her to agree to bring back Buffy, since she was so against bringing people back from the dead earlier.

Calling Buffy insane and a disgrace is quite harsh! While at the same time finding all kind of excuses and justifications for Willow’s behavior until it’s absolutely unavoidable to acknowledge that “she” is the disgrace.

It wasn't about the decorations, that may seem like a harmless spell and it is, if it was a once off or even a once in a while thing. That's not the case, Willow is using magic for everything and anything, especially things that are easily done without magic, that's the problem. Being powerful has always led to abusing that power and Willow is doing that. The constant use of magic makes it seem like it's nothing of consequence and leads to her using it as if that's the case all the time. As we saw, shifting people to another dimension, were that could easily go wrong, she didn't even pause for a second to consider it. Now she's using it against people, just cause she finds them inconvenient. I've never liked Willow, I've always thought she was putting on the innocent geek act, by her own admission she was horrible to people like Cordelia, spreading nasty rumours about her. Yes, you can argue that Cordelia was mean to her first but at least she is upfront and says things to your face. I can respect that a hell of a lot more than Willow pretending to be the put upon good girl when she goes behind people's backs. I think she's pathetic and I wouldn't put anything past her. I've always thought she might have done something to Xander, back when they were cheating, to make that happen. While they had a slight moment once before when she was the ONLY girl around him for a summer, they almost had a hormonal episode. Other than that Xander has never shown the slightest interest in her, she had been using magic for a while by then and she was jealous. I'm not saying she did spell him but I wouldn't be surprised if she had.
