####### EPISODE SPOILER REVIEW BELOW! APPARENTLY SOME OF YOU ARE WATCHING FOR THE FIRST TIME ALONG SIDE ME, SO PLEASE DON'T READ BEYOND THIS POINT UNTIL YOU HAVE SEEN THE EPISODE YOURSELF! ######

------

This was so good! Definitely reminded me of something else, but this did it in a unique way! I genuinely thought Willow was dead at one point. XD

Really haunting episode. It's great to see that the show can still have these kinds of phytologically breaking stories, even in Solid Side-Quests!

I love how Dawn being taller than Buffy, something I have mentioned several times, is now a plot device. XD

Bloomin' Hank!

Hope you guys are having a great week!

As always, if you click the video just after this post, you may need to  download it first.  This should be fixed in a couple of hours!

Personally not a fan of this episode because of how it handles Joyce. I feel like if we were ever going to find out about Buffy being in an institution it would have been back at the end of season 2 when Joyce found out about Buffy being the slayer. Fun fact: Joss Whedon ended up as the writer on the 'Astonishing X-Men' comics and had one of the characters mention having a cousin in California in a mental institution for years because she insists she's a vampire slayer. It's a very good comic run, I recommend :)

I know what you mean about this season not having structure, but I think it actually has the most out of all the other seasons. It's just more subtextual. Every episode feels like it's building on the previous ones imo, which is something I don't think I could say for the previous seasons. The last time we saw Hank was actually in the penultimate episode of season 5, but he was only in Buffy's mind. The ending doesn't necessarily mean that Buffy is actually in the hospital because she hadn't yet had the antidote. As for why they ended the episode that way, I think a big part is to make the audience question what's real of course, but I think it's also symbolic of the fact that even though Buffy chose to live in the real world, the temptation of the alternate reality is still there. I think you're feeling exactly what you're supposed to be feeling about the Trio because it's how Buffy feels too. Just as the doctor said in this episode, they're just three pathetic little men, and yet somehow Buffy can't seem to best them.

Lime Pie

Unless Buffy only remembers being in an institution because of Dawn. For instance, perhaps the monks had Buffy tell her parents she was the Slayer because they needed to have Dawn find out too and the memory of the institution came from that.

Absolutely love Red Dwarf and absolutely love Back to Reality " Dwayne Dibley!? "😅 Andrews reference : 8 more guys make 11 (Oceans Eleven) lol SMG was so good in this episode.

VeggieGamer

I should have guessed it was Oceans Eleven! XD

As far as I’m concerned, that ending confirms that it’s completely canon that Buffy is in a mental institution and all of this is in her head. 😆

When it comes to the episode you “didn’t like” - I don’t know. You reacted exactly how you are supposed to react. The trio thought it would be “so cool” to make any woman into a sex slave, kind of like a boyish fantasy, but then hearing the “R” word suddenly changes everything. You’re supposed to feel uncomfortable.

Jake M

LOL, at the start you said "Future Xander" ruined Terror's life, instead of Anya XD

Jake M

Absolutely you can have a bad taste for the trio...I may have mentioned a few times why I don't like this season (*cough*, 7 so far, *cough*) and they/their toxic masculinity is a part of it. I know we're supposed to hate the Big Bads, but surely not in that way?

Madikuma95

I actually kinda like how 'mundane' their evil is, in contrast to previous big bads. Like Umbridge, they're bad people who you could meet in real life.

Janis Hope

Not saying you're wrong but don't forget that Sunnydale Buffy still hadn't drunk Willow's antidote when the episode ends....

Garry (Not Jerry)

But she wasn’t conscious for that interaction. How could it have been happening inside Buffy’s mind if Buffy herself didn’t even experience it?

Janis Hope

We saw a few scenes in Sunnydale that Buffy didn't experience - with the Trio and with Xander and Spike hunting the demon for instance - and that makes me think that Sunnydale was the reality and not the institution. The episode was deliberately left open to interpretation though. Maybe it's one of those situations where there is no right or wrong, only opinion.

Garry (Not Jerry)

I mean yes you’re totally right that there’s tons of stuff that happens when Buffy is not there. Even scenes in the regular show, where she is literally unconscious and stuff is happening around her (or dead…) exactly like in this scene. So no, it doesn’t make that much sense if you want it to be completely logical. I guess my only argument against that is that Buffy is an entire tv series with tons of backstory, whereas this other world where Buffy is in a psychiatric ward is only focused on for this one episode, so I put a lot more stake in the logic behind it, since it is a lot more intentional.

Steven

Thats a good point that I haven’t thought about before. It still leaves a bad taste in my mouth with this being how buffy says goodbye to Joyce. The episode is really well done though

Raven Dark

My interpretation of that ending scene has always been that both realities exist. At the end, we're seeing an alternate dimension, one which Buffy was slipping in and out of throughout the episode. Which means, in another reality, there is another Buffy for whom being the slayer is a delusion, she's trapped in an institution, and she is now catatonic.

Diego Zenhäusern

Uff, I didn't even think about that angle...that would be devastating😭!

Swearie Faerie

I remember having to sit with that idea for awhile. I was a fairly depressed teenager.😅

Raven Dark

Nicole, so was I. I guess our state of mind when we see something like this can really color our perspective.

Raven Dark

Diego, IKR? Oddly enough, that's what I like about it. I love endings that make you think and stay with you.
