Do NOT apologize for the book club being late! Honestly, I thought we weren’t going to get this until December, so this is a very nice surprise 😊 Excited to listen today!

Oh my gosh. I'm sooooo behind with the book reviews, and even reading the books myself

PumpkinSparks

Wow, I wanted to write my comment yesterday, but totally forgot... and then I worked late today to get some more overtime in before my operation... oh well... didn't have too much to say though, anyways. I really only have 2 short notes: Hermoine is freaking amazing! The older I get, the more I like her. Like, she had zero ego when she calmly explained to Harry that even if we just look at it from an acaademic standpoint he is better than her in DADA. I love her for acknowledging that without being bitter about it. I adore Harry for daydreaming about possible lectures before he even decided to do the club. For one that is very endearing and shows a site of him we havn't really seen yet. But also I can so relate!!! Also I'm excited. We are now starting one of the story arcs I love most in the whole series (maybe possibly my favourite...) Anyways, looking forward to watching this tomorrow!

My only memory of the Inquisitor from Red Dwarf comes from Robot Wars, where a team named their bot after it. Craig Charles: "Unusual name, Where'd you get it?" Inquisitor captain: "I'd rather not say." CC: "Go on!" I: *cough* Red Dwarf *cough*" CC: "Never heard of it!" 😂 I've literally only just clocked Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds = L S D 🤦🏼‍♂️ I knew it was about drugs, but... 😂

Substitute teachers always called me Carl its okay lol, my mom didnt like the extra letters in Carrie.

I think Rebecca Front too would be a good Umbridge to continue your discussions about Thick Of It; but yes Joanna Scanlan is a great shout, I definitely get the "toad" vibes if she were in makeup as our infamous Inquisitor. I need to look out that nose rinse thing; my bed is next to my window in my room which means I can't have the vent open in the Autumn/Winter months, and so my nose gets blocked and dried up daily, which only then is breathable when I go for a walk. And yes, about Harry, he definitely is becoming more like James son as the books go on, never afraid to speak up and has that talent for getting himself and others into mischief! His seflessness from his mum's side is always there too, but he definitely feels a lot more like James in many book scenes, apart from his looks, in which apparently James was pretty handsome. My Italian brother-in-law loves George & Mildred, and in fact bought the box set of the series in his first year of marriage to my sister, as he always jokes that they are very comparable to G & M! For what its worth, I love G & M and both of their theme tunes are iconic. I also remember them as my dad used to fancy Yootha Joyce, which I never got back in the day, but I see it now as to why he did like her, as though she was far from conventionally attractive, she had something about her. Poor soul she was however...

Same here about the LSD!! 🤯🤦🏻‍♀️

This is a very small detail but in the movie when Hermione says to Harry "Cho couldn't take your eyes off you" you can see Ginny looking annoyed. The films don't really acknowledge her relationship with Michael Corner but knowing that she's dating him I don't think she'd react like that lol

Alias93

You made a good point when reading my comment that I didn't think about, if Fred and George were in charms class when Flitwick got inspected then that means they did pass their O.W.L.s in charms, so I guess that is confirmed. They also had DADA lessons with "Moody" last year so they would have passed their O.W.L.s in that subject too, which isn't that surprising since they had Lupin in their 5th year and he was a pretty competent teacher. I don't doubt that they are probably pretty good at potions, but I just see them as not really caring what grade they would get, they're probably capable of learning what they need on their own (or just making new stuff themselves), and I doubt they would try to impress Snape by getting a good grade. I would have to check to be sure, but I think Harry was aware that Ginny was being shy around him because she had a crush on him (I think Ron tells him in CoS when they are in the Burrow during the summer, unless that's just in the movie?). But at this point he doesn't really care if she likes him or not anyway. In the CoS movie, Hermione said the "fear of a name" line to Lucius Malfoy in the bookstore when he says that Harry must be "brave" or foolish to dare say his name. That leaves the impression that she wouldn't have a problem saying it herself, but then she does in the OotP movie, so that's a bit of continuity error there (I don't really blame the movies for that tbh, it was 3 movies apart with different directors, and when the CoS movie came out the OotP book wasn't even out yet, at least they tried to incorporate that bit of the book in this movie, even if the tone wasn't really there).

VeggieGamer

Oh Rebecca Front is excellent in everything she is in!! I think there are many characters she could big great as!

Concerning outerhouse-relations: we read the books from Harrys POV, who is incredibly narrow sighted. He is an interesting choice as a main character, because he only reacts to what is put in front of him and doesn't seek out new experiences or people on his own. His 2 best friends are Ron and Hermione (Ron happened to be the person he spend his first trainride with and then they ended up in the same house, and granted Hermione grew on him over time). His other people he's friendly with and has a vague idea what they're on about? Rons brothers, his male Gryffendor classmates he shares a dorm with, his Quidditch team mates. Other people he kinda knows? Some same years of different houses and same year Gryffendor girls because they share classes. Other Quidditch players. And that's pretty much it! The only way Harry ever gets to know someone, is if one of his friends or weird circumstances takes a person, shoves it in front of Harrys face, and tells him "yo, this is a person too. Talk!" This is my very long winded way of saying that we kinda don't know how other students relate to the different houses. But it is suggested a lot in the text that they do form outerhouse relations. Ginnys boyfriend is Ravenclaw, so was Percys girlfriend. Speaking of Ravenclaws, Padma Patil is in that house and it is very likely that Parvati would know and at least be friendly with her sisters friends. And those are just the most obvious examples. And that ties in beautifully with the Slytherin question. Again, we only know what Harry knows (which isn't a lot). And sure, Draco and his goons are awful, but not all Slytherins are that! Having ambition and cunning as your main traits does not make you a bad person. I absolutely see a world where Slytherins are friends with someone of the other houses, and even more where a Slytherin is so not happy about how Umbridge teaches. If you read the book willy-nilly it absolutely can seem that Slytherin=evil. But if one actually reads was is written and suggested in the subtext, all the houses are way more complex than that. The later into the books we get, the more I feel that the author got influenced by the perception of how the world was understood. And I feel it starts to be really blatant in this book - even the sorting hats song villanizes Slytherin and disses Hufflepuff as the house who takes the leftovers. Whereas the first books song very clearly highlights the positives of each house!

Just a quick note on Rons reaction to Ginny being in a relationship: I feel her pain! Back when I read this book the first time, that passage was so funny to me. Then like 2 years later on my first re-read it felt very different. At that point I had been to a couple of partys and usually my brother would attend the same party. Now he kept asking me why I'm not dating and stuff, and made me feel that it is a bit weird that I wasn't. But also at these partys when occasionally I met someone I liked the face of and we danced a lot, or started talking intesively in some quieter corner, or made out - rest assured a couple minutes in my big brother (who is a tall sporty dude, and quite intimidating if if chooses to be) would tower over my potential beau, asking what they were doing! Very soon they all saw someone in the crowd they really had to talk to... Yeah, I wonder why I didn't date... Ron, I love that you love your little sister. But just no!

Shiro523

Wow that's a detail I never caught in the OotP movie. Lol I'm going to have to go back and see that for myself. 😆 But honestly I think she'd still look annoyed at Hermione meantioning Cho not taking her eyes off Harry even while she was dating Corner. I don't want to say why because I know Veggie reads comments and he may consider it a spoiler. But it's a line that she says later on that tells me that she wouldn't like hearing Hermione say that.

Madikuma95

Now I'm morbidly curious about Fry's Susan Bones voice. X'D Jim Dale just uses a normal voice for her.

Methanoutput

Yes there were DADA classes before Voldemort!

Let me throw this in here at the start, I actually have grown to really like the one chapter per video format. That's what the Super Carlin Brothers podcast does, so if you are worried about that don't be :) My company has an office in Milton Keynes, never visited as I haven't been to England since Jan 2007 but that was my first thought when you said where the arcade was lol. Hit enter before I was ready, will add notes as I go. I do love the movie montage of her inspecting the classes, Snape's moment specifically. Makes me laugh every time, and the music is just *chefs kiss* in the moment he whacks Ron in the head. I love McGonagall in the book though. As for her having an argument in front of students, based on how she reacted to Trelawney in Azkaban it is definitely out of character for her. But that's what Umbridge brings out in people. I think because we have less time with Umbridge in the movie, her taking so much joy in what she's doing, i.e. humiliating Flitwick, is meant to just show her character more, both literally and her intangible character if that makes sense. I wouldn't be surprised if people are actively avoiding the DADA professor role, honestly. Speaking of Keira Knightley, have you listened to the PS audiobook yet? Obviously she's not in it but I do like it so far. Also, this occurred to me recently. Why isn't Fudge the Prime Minister? Why the Minister of Magic? It makes it sound like just another department in the Muggle government, which I think may have been the case before the Statute of Secrecy was a thing. If Lucius is 41 then he's 6 years older than the Marauders era characters, so he would have been in 7th year when they started. I was not a fan of school and didn't do particularly well either, the public school system is not great for neurodivergent kids. I can't think of any teacher who would call students dunces when I went to school, but for sure some who would think it. I think we were much more aware of learning disabilities as a society when I was in elementary school, and were starting to get more accommodating. By the time I was in high school I'd been diagnosed with ADHD and so the school accommodated that. I'm in Canada though so idk what it would have been like in Europe. I never thought about it but it is nice that not wanting to disappoint Hermione is Harry's reason for working hard. I don't think losing points is appealable but this one in particular does feel like something you should be able to challenge. There 100% is fanfiction where Aang shows up in Harry Potter. Lots of it, probably. I've had some English candies recently, there's a store in Mississauga (greater Toronto area) that sells English/Scottish/Irish things are I am a bit obsessed with the Simpkins travel sweets. And I think it was Walker's English Cream toffees? I still see Maggie Smith whenever I think of McGonagall, I can't help it. I think she was perfectly cast. I can 100% imagine that inspection scene with her if it had been in the movie. I dropped science before it got to the point where we would be dissecting animals, and it only would have happened had I taken biology. "I packed up my stuff and right" the sigh I just sighed. It's Hermione's idea in the movie too, she says they need someone who will teach them and then there is the ominous crash of thunder, lol. I love that Harry being modest, for lack of a better word, is explaining exactly why he should be their teacher and not even realizing it. I appreciate that Hermione points that out, and gets over her fear to say Voldemort's name. I have to go do work things so I will continue with the next chapter in a bit. Steve Kloves really butchered Ron's character and I will forever be angry about it. It's kind of crazy that all of this has happened in the first two months of the year when you think about it. I don't think Filch is being tricked, I think he does it willingly. So many *stare at the "camera" like I'm on The Office* moments in this chapter. I forgot Zacharias Smith was in this scene, and just ugh. Not a fan, even as a fellow Hufflepuff. You're definitely reading him correctly. There is definitely an Ernie/Hermione ship out there, Hermione gets shipped with pretty much everyone. I saw part of one episode of the show where Mark Williams is a priest, I was at my grandmas house, and I was like "That's Mr. Weasley!" out loud. She laughed when I explained who Mr. Weasley is, lol. Hermione lost 50 points in PS when they got caught after delivering Norbert to Charlie's friends. I'm also pretty sure she lost points in POA when she gave Neville the right instructions to brew the potion that Snape was planning on poisoning Trevor the Toad with. So not the first time she's lost points. Regarding the "Fear of the name increases fear of the thing itself", Dumbledore says it at the end of PS and Hermione says it in the bookshop at the beginning-ish of the COS movie. Overall I agree, I like the book version of these moments better but the movie did have it's moments.

You talking about strange songs from the 70s made me think about the Ballad of Bilbo Baggins that Leonard Nimoy released in the late 60s. Have you ever seen that music video?

Mary

I love your Umbridge prediction! I picture her as Annette Badland (she’s very good at switching between evil and sickly sweet). I also picture the actress that played Cilla Battersby in Coronation Street (there’s a random reference for you) as she was quite a ‘nasty’ character at times. I think Imelda Staunton was too likeable lol

VeggieGamer

I actually never got around to seeing the Bilbo Baggins song! XD
