SPOILER ALERT! - If you have not watched the show before, don't read the following review until you have! :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wow, this was an episode like none other! It was fascinating (and I'll be honest, a lil scary) seeing Zuko's earlier years.

And we definitely learned so much important information on Iroh... gutted for him.

This is clearly inspired by old westerns, and I think they did a brilliant job with it. I love Zuko's story so much.

Hope you had a great week, guys!!

"An episode without our protagonists" Are you sure? I guess it depends on how you define protagonist, but I would make the argument that Zuko could absolutely be seen as one. While he was introduced as the main antagonist in book 1, that quickly was taken over by Zhao and now Azula (basically a personification of the war effort and a more active foil than Ozai) Zuko and Iroh then became kinda a third party in the plot, with the objectively good (the Gaang), the objectively bad (Ozai and and war effort), and then those two being very very complicated... If we accept that the protagonist is not just Aang, but everyone in the Gaang, then Zuko absolutely qualifies! I don't want to go into essay territory, so I'll make this as surface level as possible. But if we put our "let's get real nerdy and dissect this b****"-glasses on and look at the definition of protagonist: -Protagonists make key decisions and influence the plot, propel the story forward, face the most significant obstacles - that is absolutely Aang, and that is Zuko! - If there is a subplot, there will often be more than one protagonist. Obviously each of the Gaang has their own character arc and story inputs, but Zukos story influences the overall story on a way bigger level while it technically could be standing alone for the most part - making it way more subplot territory - They will usually have an antagonist. I would argue that Aangs antagonist is Ozai (big story) and Zukos is Azula (subplot/more condensed issue) So in conclusion, obviously Aang is THE protagonist (hero archetype), but Zuko is the secondary one (antihero archetype). On a very different note: The backstory is so freaking gut wrenching! There is this opressive trapped feeling they give me. And every scene with Ursa has this lingering sadness about them - I can't really describe it, but it's so well done and leaves you just feeling bad... What do you think happened to Ursa? Also you're way of saying Azulon sounded more like Azulamon, which made it sound like he's a Digimon 🤣

You're kind of posting spoilers...

Kael Johnsen

Hey veggie and and everyone else do not read/explain the unclear stuff happening with zuko, as the show will explain it later.

Madikuma95

This episode was one of my faves as a kid 'cause I had a huge crush on Zuko. 😆

Embran

Zuko´s Tenacious knife never shown again. He likely continues to use it for survival. Though maybe sparse. To fine a blade as just a chopping tool. Even if it´s just one pony tail and a top knot as we´ve seen. ^^

Shadowwolf21687

This episode is my least favorite episode. I tend to always skip this episode when rewatching the series. That little kid always annoyed me.

LouShirley

Definitely Spaghetti Westerns 🤣 I need to go rewatch The Dollars Trilogy for the 100th time

Rold

I've never given books a proper try so Im down for the Avatar book club stuff! Also that fighting game is coming summer of 2026, there was a closed alpha with 4 characters that just ended (UK wasn't included :( ) and it looks amaaaaaaazing! The combat has so much depth but can still probably button mash and soo many moves and it looks epic as hell. Can't wait. You can watch it, no spoilers except maaaybe some win screen character lines, the only character you haven't seen is the Korra character you already saw. They confirmed it will have 12 characters on release, and tbh thats insane with the showcased depth of the 4 characters...

i dont know why, but I expected the next episode... what a nice surprise. This episode was great. When I was a child i did not understand the whole backstory fully if I am being hoenest. This is why ATLA is so great, it ist just so complex. I am so hyped for you to enjoy the greatness of the series in the following episodes :) Have a great week Veggie!

I remember watching some of the voice actors in an interview, this is the only episode the Aang voice actor didn't watch because he wasnt in it lol. I was like damn he missed a good one than. The turtleducks are one of my favorite creatures in ATLA, so cute I want them so much. The backstory on zuko and azula and how their mom disappeared is so sad. I am glad zuko said who he really was at the end of the episode "zuko, son of ursa and ozai, Prince of the fire nation and heir to the throne", reminded me of simba in the lion king, zuko being simba and mufasa being his mother, "you have forgotten who you are and so you have forgotten me, look inside yourself simba, you are more than what you have become. Remember who you are, you are my son and the one true king"

loftypenalty91

The dagger we see this episode is the same one that Zuko and Iroh used to cut off their ponytails in book 2 episode 1. There's so much more I'd love to talk about, but I can't without verging into spoilers. In my opinion, this is the best written episode up to this point.

Alex Hopps

When its time to shoot, shoot, dont talk

Jake M

I think you mean "Mick Foley from US Robot Wars", that's all he's famous for right? XD

Cinnamon troll

Omg same. I was so sure it's going to be "the chase"

Embran

Never watched the US version, but I vaguely recall Foley being co-host. Worth watching?

Jake M

Honestly, not fully seen it myself so can't recommend either way XD

Jake M

"Everything I've done, I've done to protect you" Not sure I like his mother's Bryan Adams cover. It feels like we're building towards Zuko's redemption/character shift... We've just added Earth Toph, I wonder if he'll join the six pack next? We do need a friendly Fire Nation after all... (Watching first time too so no spoilers please!)

VeggieGamer

Hi Pumpkin! Sorry if I don't address everything in the comment as it is late here, but you use the term 'main antagonist', and that isn't something I have felt about Zuko for a long time (since Zhao stepped up in power). But he does 'antagonise' our protagonists, and has the entire time. I don't mean he is the main villain, the main villain to me in the Fire Lord. But Zuko is trying to capture the Avatar, just a few episodes ago he made that clear. That is his soul intent at this point (remembering, I don't know anything that happens in his future decisions). I wouldn't say that Aang is antagonizing Zuko. Please remember that I ONLY know what has been presented to me in the epsiodes, I don't see how Zuko isn't antagonising Aang. Again, please remember I have not seen future episodes. I want to be able to enjoy this show as naturally as possible. At this point, I don't see how Zuko hasn't antagonised our heroes (antagonists can be completely lovely people, as I am sure you know, but they work against the ideals the heroes are aiming for).

Jake M

That discussion at the end sealed it- after we've finished Buffy, you NEED to watch Firefly. It's a Western in space!

VeggieGamer

Thanks Kael! I do feel I am trying to be told stuff I shouldn't right now..

VeggieGamer

Weirdly, even though I absolutely loved it, I can actually see why you would feel this. It was an episode like no other, and it felt brutal. And I can understand you seeing Lee as annoying. But for me, it was total character building, in a really good way. But again, I can totally see this episode not being to everyone's taste.

VeggieGamer

Only seen G,B&U. I really should check out the others! :)

VeggieGamer

I THOUGHT THAT WAS THE KNIFE!! I wish I had said it! XD But that is cool that is appeared earlier on.

VeggieGamer

Oh, I mean, ok. I guess I can cross that out of note list.

LouShirley

Absolutely! They're some of my favourite westerns. Though, any western with either Clint Eastwood or Dean Martin has my vote XD

lavender 🪻

I completely forgot this was episode right after tophs introduction It's so good. Zuko focused episodes are always so fantastic. Dante Basco does such a phenomenal job as him

PumpkinSparks

Oh, I totally only talk about everything that we know so far and what remember feeling/thinking when I first watched it! In my attempt not to spoil anything and not to write a 10-page essay, I might have erred on the side of becoming too vague... When I say that Zuko was introduced as the main antagonist, I mean that during the first couple of episodes I thought "okay, so that duo is the people we're gonna fight for however long this show is gonna run". And then very quickly I started to be sympethatic towards Zuko (and love Iroh) and kinda wanted them to get a win, but obviously didn't want them to win. And then Zhao got introduced (and Ozai was teased) and my brain went "oh, so THAT is our main foe!" And then for the rest of book 1 Zuko (and Iroh) was in this weird antagonist/protagonist/neither space, and my teen mind had a very hard time pinpointing what they are. And when book 2 started I was pretty much set on the idea that Zukos story is obviously the subplot and he is its protagonist. Also protagonist does not mean hero! It's a term for the person who drives that story basically. You can totally have a villain protagonist (Clockword Orange come to mind for example). And you can absolutely have the protagonists of each storyline be antagonistic towards each other. The beauty of Zukos story arc so far is that he can double down and become one of the main villains, he can go on a character growth journey and become one of the heros, he can realize that he just wants the quiet life and fade into the background, or any combination of these - and all of them would make sense! So yeah, just looking at the story so far, I'm gonna double down on the argument that Zuko is a protagonist. I also acknowlege that how my brain applies certain terms, and the way I read and think about stories might be slightly different than most people, since my father studied to become a german and history teacher and my mother studied germanistic and linguistic. And while neither of them work in these fields, they taught us from an early age to read critically and discussed what we read together pretty early on.

jolt45

Fantastic episode of course. There is one detail I notice a lot of reactors don't mention, but becomes clearer on a 2nd watch. Zuko is being influenced in the present by his memories. The obvious example is him repeating "Azula always lies", but my favorite has to do with his mother when she says "never forget who you are". Zuko seems to channel this memory when he announces his name, title, and heritage. I'm not so sure that's what Ursa meant when she said it but I think Zuko feels the need to announce it more for himself than the crowd. I think he is reminding himself of who he is because he is afraid he might forget...

VeggieGamer

Hi guys, please try to avoid giving me info I haven’t been given in the show yet. I want to enjoy the show as naturally as possible, but I also want to be able to read your comments without fear of being hinted at things. I love this show and I fear I may have to stop reading your thoughts, which will be like a nightmare as reading your comments is my favourite part of doing these videos. I am so tired right now.

Embran

Don´t worry, the dual swords get plenty of screen time still.

Kimberley Azula

A whole episode about Zuzu. Urgh. And Ursa is just so annoying. At least it showed how Iroh showed weakness and let his emoions get the better of him. It showed he wouldn't have the strength and ruthlessness needed to be a good firelord. Azula also doesn't always lie. She just knows what to say and how to say things to get what she wants. And that often is to get under someone's skin.

krfix

If you want a Western to watch, I recommend Rango Excellent animated movie, was really underrated at the time of release, has the coolest villain

Madikuma95

Oh yeah I really love the villain's design in Rango, it's *inspired*.

James McCarthy

I third this idea, i do not usually like westerns but Rango is an excellent example hiting all the right boxes but still feeling unique thanks to the animal characters and animation style

Hannah G0123

I think it’s important for himself that Zuko announces his identity after saying “it doesn’t matter who I am” and use his mother’s name before his father’s name, even more significant bcuz of his father’s title. It’s so risky & not pragmatic, but it’s motivated by his emotions & the memories he feels connection to. Zuko sees himself as his mother’s son even though his journey has been so heavily shaped by being his father’s son. He is also in a way opening himself up to shame for his identity, he’s not responsible for what his family has done but he is still a part of both his family & the Fire Nation. The episode with the girl whose leg was burnt (forgot her name) was critical for Zuko to get to the mental place he’s in now. He has matured enough to understand why Lee has such anger for him & that the kid has a right to judge him, but it still hurts his feelings. Zuko is allowing himself to recognize what’s going on internally & externally more. Even tho they had a sweet connection, these boys also exist in a world where Zuko’s family & people are persecuting & devastating Lee’s family, people, and land. There’s so much nuance in Zuko owning his heritage, identifying more with his mother, and still being defined by his father. PS. It’s interesting we can tell that Zuko is a lot closer to his mom directly from the episode, but that also means that Lord Ozai is likely the parent closer to Azula & that’s shown more indirectly. Ursa is understandably disturbed by her daughter but not questioning *where* that behavior is being learned. It’s probably typical ‘parental oversight’ bcuz she’s more focused on her son to make up for the lack of attention he gets from Ozai.

Logical Dreamer

Zuko Alone is my all-time favorite episode of Avatar. It's so good.

Goblin

I think I've commented it before, but huge, HUGE agree with the folks suggesting Firefly !! It is an incredible take on the western genre, and I genuinely feel the writing (especially the banter & dialogue style) is second to none. Also this episode is such a standout, isn't it ? When I first saw commercials for this series I would have never guessed we would get this kind of atmosphere & storytelling. I love that we get to see snippets of Zuko's past as well, and finally a look at his parents ! I also adore that it not only holds a magnifying glass up to how/why Zuko is the way he is, but also we see more of Azula (including how early she befriended Mai & Ty-Lee, even if it was mentioned in passing before) Also some Iroh backstory !! It's wild to think about the weight even the tiniest scraps of info carries when it comes to these characters (Again, not something I would've ever expected even from the first episode..) ATLA truly is something else <3
