The line you’re referring to from the movies is from GoF :D

Annette Elliott

There are a lot more Quidditch games book vs movie. There are spells and potions for things like colds, etc.

Annette Elliott

The whole Norbert issue and detention in the dark forest are a lot different than the movies.

You’re allowed to bring your wand to a quidditch match but not use it, unless there’s a case of emergency. I imagine first years (who are not able to do much with their wands anyway) maybe leave it in their dorms. Hermione probably always brings her wand anyway, because she’s so excited about being a witch and loves an opportunity to prove herself. I don’t know, that’s my best take on it. I agree with you that it sounds off.

Well a SMALL Spoiler - if you continue wth the books, you will get more of the Centaurs (and House Elfes for that matter) as for Pizza NIght - since now all our children (5 of them from 12 - 22) are joining in I need a lot and our oldest daughter (22) is vegan, soe we usually have one home made veagn pizza with mushrooms/peppers/tomatos (and soy cheese). I have two vegetarians as well, so we also have one with tuna / onions / corn and then for the rest I have like three with mixed toppings - one with ham/pineapple one with some sort of bolognese sauce half of it with mushrooms again and one with salami, half of it with pineapple the other half with mushrooms and as a special request we are having one with sauce hollandaise/asparagus and ham My favorite topping would also include mushrooms and then it would depend on my daily "cravings" sometimes I am going for vegan - sometimes I am going with whatever the freezer has in. It has been a long time sine the whol family jas been gathering, since our three oldest already have their own homes. So - thank you for bringing my family together during the week. As I read the books before I have a different approach to Snape. I knew JKR had imagined Alan - and so I used to merge Sape and the "Sherrif of NOttingham Alan". I was sort of dissapointed with film Mc Gonagall, I always imgained her as someone in the end of her 40s/middle 50s - and as much as I love Maggie Smith for me she was a bit to old (still love her anyway). So now I am off to prepare Pizza. Thank you once again! I hope you will have a pleasant weekend (yeah I am early)

In the words of count dooku “I’ve been looking forward to this”🤩

I agree about the wand thing BUT students aren't actually allowed to use magic outside class, like in the hallways. And them being first years, taking the rules more seriously than older students would (the trio certainly won't care about the rule later on), I think it makes sense why Neville would say that. But then again it could just be because JKR was new to the world herself. In the books wands are always described as sort of a continuation of a wizards's arm. One would feel a little lost without their wand.

Been excited for this since I saw the comments were closed on the discussion post. Definitely love the book club feel and this might be the slowest I’ve ever read this book but I feel like I’m paying it more attention as a result. Harry Potter was important to my growth in reading and is the reason I got kicked out of my reading class in 4th grade. Apparently the book was 7th grade reading level so I was moved to the boring literature class where my teacher tried to convince me that the curtains are blue to show the character’s depression. As an author myself, and being friends with several others, the curtains were blue because the author wanted them blue. Looking forward to the last chapters.

You're absolutely right about Filch's line! He says it in the beginning of Chambers when the boys arrive to the school. The term warlock is really more of a title in this world, as well as almost of a synonym for wizard. Not exactly but I don't really know how to describe it. All warlocks are wizards, but not all wizards are warlocks 😅

emmainkeri

I never really thought about the giant hourglasses not being in the films. I have them so clearly envisioned in my head that I almost assumed they appeared in at least one of the movies. If you end up playing the Potter games at some point, you'll see them there :)

emmainkeri

And I would assume they'll be in Hogwarts Legacy too!

Another great video, it really made my day! A few remarks: Ron actually tells Madam Pomfrey it was a dog bite („I‘ve told her it was a dog but I don‘t think she believes me“). Also I think Draco didn‘t go straight to a teacher because he really wanted Harry getting caught. So he was looking for the best opportunity, which he got, when he found the letter. I think he went to McGonagall because she is the head of Gryffindor House and can therefore expell them. Another thing is Quiddich. As far as I understood it, each House plays against every other House once every schoolyear. They don‘t have a final, which is why the points made by the chasers actually become relevant to see who won. I think they just calculate all the points a team made per season and whoever made most won. But I‘m not sure so others please correct me if I‘m wrong. There is a seperate Quiddich Cup but victorys are somehow giving house points too. By the way, I forgot to ask you in the book club what you think about Rons (and everyone else from wizard families) reaction when Harry says Voldemorts name. In the book you really get the impression this is a big taboo and is something very frightening to do.

Garry (Not Jerry)

Ron told Madam Pomfrey that it was a dog bite, but he doesn’t think that she believes him. It was a throwaway line so you might have missed it but I though it was very telling!

Garry (Not Jerry)

I was going to leave a comment about Snape being able to read minds - before I saw someone else had already mentioned it. Throughout the series both Snape and Voldemort both seem to be extremely good at telling when people are lying, as well as doing the opposite (convincingly deceiving people). It is very much related to their abilities at occlumency and legilimency (something which Snape tries - and fails - to teach Harry in Half Blood Prince EDIT: Order of the Phoenix, my bad) You really notice it whenever Snape catches Harry or Harry gets in trouble for something - he always is able to get a good read on Harry. I would even argue that Snape is EVEN BETTER than Voldemort.

Benjamin Hütz

I like my pizza with bacon and extra cheese, thats all :)

Diego Zenhäusern

Yeah, to be honest I just fell like Rowling just did not really have figured out at that point how common it would be for you to just take your wand everywhere and that she wouldn't have written that line at a later point 🤔

Diego Zenhäusern

Yeah, I really feel like it's just the latter🤔! As you said, a wand is basically a part of you...

itsanursething

Yes! And if you do decide to go to Leavesden Studios, you can see them in the great hall. They're beautiful!

Diego Zenhäusern

To be honest I think the fact that Pomfrey does not further question it really speaks to her competence🙂! Because I feel like it would really be better if the students felt like they could come to her without being asked akward questions. So they would not try to hide injuries etc. and then get serious damage because they didn't go to her🤔

Diego Zenhäusern

I definitely feel like your complaints about there being a little too much coincidence in Draco finding the note in the book are valid! After multiple re-reads of the series it kinda feels to me like Rowling knew that she wanted Harry to get in trouble and send to the forbidden forest (and probably also that she wanted a dragon to be involved) but did not really manage to find a really good way to make it all happen. And that's why there is so much coincidence involved and Draco's behaviour is kinda strange🤔 And to be honest, I think that's okay! No book can be perfect in every regard and that doesn't mean that it is bad🙃

emmainkeri

I love Pomfrey! She needs more praise for the important work she does. I agree with Diego.

Annamarie schwirian

Charlie graduated several years before Ron and Harry started school.

Hilde

*Order of the Phoenix, but yes to all of this!

Rini

I am sorry, but can Veggie or anyone else explain why Veggie thought Harry cheated during the quiddith game, and that Hufferpuff should not have lost. I actually went back to read the book and listened to the audio, but can not understand this comment at all. The game, apart from Molfoy-Ron fight in the background was very straight forward. Harry spot and caught the snitch very quickly. What’s wrong with that? 🤨

Garry (Not Jerry)

It’s all just a big joke, because VEGGIE is a Hufflepuff and therefore bias! 😉

Rini

Oh! Thank you. My bad then. May be because english is not my first language, I thought he was completely serious. Hopefully, when this is up on ytube, peoples will get his joke. I would not want peoples who don’t read book take it as true info, believing that Harry cheated.

Garry (Not Jerry)

His sense of humour is very dry and British. It can be confusing for other cultures too. Even native speakers!

Maria

Hello there, fellow star wars quoter! :P

Dara Jeeling

@Rini some people have a very dry sense of humor (not only brits do) - but I cand efinetly see why Veggie thinks the Gryffindors cheated *snorts * I mean... whenever Slythering is baout to win the house cup Dumbledore awards Harry points for breathing...

I always saw wands more like for training as students then more for help? We know stronger wizards and witches can use magic without the wand, but there are plently of wizards and witches who will seem to always need their wands. It seems to me its more of being able to focus the magic where they need it to go and keep it controlled. I feel like if you aren't strong enough, some spells may go out of control. Similar to the Fiendfyre in the deathly hallows that Crabbe started (At least I believe in the book it was Crabbe) Even with a wand he lost control.

Katie

According to Google the definition of a warlock is 'a man who practises witchcraft; a sorcerer' and in the books I think it's always used to describe an old man who is a wizard.

Michelle Linardis

Mind my late comment - Have been following you on Youtube since the start of your HP venture, and have now (finally) joined you here on Patreon. Loving these book reactions! Severus Snape is by far my favorite character - I was a fan of him before Alan gave him further nuance and made him more human. He is interesting, flawed, and snarky, but damn...He has such a fabulous arc. Keeping in mind the books are mainly seen from Harry's POV, whereas the films give you an unbiased view. And there are reasons people become who they are - this delves into quite a deep and dark territory. Something to keep in mind when viewing Severus in the books. We only see what Harry sees, and what the author wants us to see.

Kunzite Blossom

You mentioned Neville playing a much larger part in the book and its true. Not really sure it's a spoiler since you've met everyone, but Ginny, Luna and Neville are known as the "silver trio" amongst fans. While Harry, Ron and Hermione are the "golden trio" Also as for the crowds during the game, as you said yourself. Luna has gone to the Gryffindor section to cheer them on when they play against Slytherin but to me it just shows you don't have to sit with your house. If your house doesn't play you can root for which ever team you want so you could go sit with that house. However Draco only does it to make comments and piss off Ron. I don't really think theres any rules saying you have to sit with your house, there is no regulations. Nobody guarding each house section. You can just walk and sit where ever. Also, you mentioning how you feel Dumbledore is somehow overseeing this whole thing, i do strongly suggest once you are done with the books, watch the Super Carlin Brothers "Dumbledore's Plan" series on youtube. Their theories are amazing and really help you understand so much. Even though it is just theories and none of it is proven (at least not all) really helps you fill in questions about why or how some things happen that don't get explained.

Kunzite Blossom

You know, thats something even in the movies. Harry would always say Voldemort and people always flinched or snapped at him to not say the name. It's something not many people comment on. Would be cool to see more people actually react to that bit.

aliennin

Dumbledore definitely has an air of always knowing what goes on in his school. He's not brand new after all. I always suspected the portraits liked to gossip too lol

Xeph

Werewolf bites transferring the curse is one of the more common traits of werewolves, but like pretty much every werewolf trait, it isn't present in every version of werewolves.

Lovegood

I actually think the reason Draco doesn’t immediately tell Filch that Harry and Hermione will be walking around at night is that he did it once before when he set them up for the duel. So there’s two possibility’s: 1. He told but he wasn’t believed (boy cried wolf effect) or 2. He didn’t tell because he wanted to make sure they actually got caught this time. How he was gonna do that I’m not totally sure.

Amanda Levy

I find the fact that Draco borrows Ron's book with the letter easier to believe than Hufflepuff losing a game 🧐💛🖤💛🖤

Elizabeth Mann

What Ronan said about the innocent always being the first victims - predicting Cedric maybe?

Ashley Faith Reacts

So glad you commented on how often Neville is mentioned! There may be a reason for that...
