Glad to help! Watching right away

23:54 Yes! I LOVE how you noticed that Professor Snape's first instinct is to help his students. Take care of the affected children first, investigate later. It shows us Severus' real character behind his mean persona. He is a strict and exacting teacher, no doubt about that. But he is also the teacher most concerned with his students' safety. It is his priority number one, which is something that cannot be said about some other teachers like McGonagall, Hagrid or Dumbledore. It's also worth noting that Severus protects all his students, not just Harry. One thing that characterizes book Snape is that he is verbally harsh but always physically gentle. It's one of the main reasons why I love him so much and why I prefer him to movie Snape. It annoys me to no end when Alan Rickman hits the boys' heads with a book or shoves their heads in the movies. That's something book Snape would never do.

Jacqueline Chaiton

1:01:00 as far as I know the only way to watch quidditch is live. I think they're broadcast on the radio but that might be fanon I've just accepted as canon.

sarah4hp

I think you are the first person I have ever heard actually LIKES Percy, let alone considers him one of the best parts of ANY of the books, so yeah... that definitely took me by surprise 😂🤣😂 You shipping Pince and Tonks is amazing as well, and made me laugh way more than it probably should have! I see the "almost a squib" thing as being a "you have so little magic, and you are so useless WITH magic, that you might as well not have been given any magic at all as it wouldn't make much difference anyway" kind of thing. Neville seeing himself in that light is kind of heartbreaking to me.

Hawwah

1:08:43 "Who the heck is deciding on these passwords? Snape? I mean that wouldn't make much sense, would it?" I think it would. Snape has to pretend he's on Voldemort's side, remember? I'm also sure that Dumbledore, being a headmaster, is aware of the password. Maybe he even suggested it as Severus' ruse.

Lady Beyond The Wall

About the Polyjuice Potion rules - I mentioned this in a reply, but I agree with you that MOVIE Barty Crouch Jr is just very good at voice impressions, which is why he was able to sound like Moody, while the children sounded more like themselves. And the Goblet of Fire movie even points towards this, but it's a small line that some people might not have noticed - when Barty Jr, as Moody, is running out of the potion and turning into himself at the end, he says something like "Marvelous dragons aren't they?" (can't remember exactly) in Hagrid's voice. So I think that little line in Hagrid's voice is meant to show us that he could impersonate someone's voice very well, which is how he could sound like Moody. So I don't really count that as a plot hole or anything, because while the "rules" are different in the movies, at least they kept it consistent and showed that he didn't just randomly sound like Moody, because he could do Hagrid's voice very well too. And about the Slytherin password: Yeah that's terrible! Especially since not ALL of the students in Slytherin are purebloods. Harry was almost put there and he has a muggle born mother and Voldemort himself was put there with a muggle father. So there's half-bloods who have to say that password to get into their common room. I'D be annoyed at least! 😂

Garry (Not Jerry)

I think they get house points for winning quidditch matches because it promotes a sense of team spirit - the entire school always comes out to watch the matches. I don’t think their are different “ability levels” for squibs and almost-squibs. Being a wizard is pretty much binary, Neville’s issue is more about self-confidence - as you’re aware, he eventually becomes a very good wizard. And the kwik-spell course is just nonsense - bait for the gullible - squibs cannot learn to be wizards - they are no different from muggles. On Madam Pomfrey keeping Hermione’s being a cat a secret - Someone mentioned it when I made the comment on the first book - on Ron’s “dog bite” which was actually a dragon. It actually speaks to her professionalism! The students need to be able to know that they can come to her about anything. On the topic of Tom riddle possibly altering his own memory - I doubt he will have had to. He is very good at lying and persuading others so there is no reason for Harry to think that he isn’t being genuine in the memory. The reason he looks to be genuinely conflicted is that he is working out how to frame Hagrid. Possibly he might have thought of several options for framing another student and is deciding that Hagrid might be the best option? Your reaction to my comment about Harry just using the invisibility cloak! 🤣 I didn’t mean to just blow your mind like that! It was just a passing thought. It was a little bit easier if they actually ARE Crabbe and Goyle because then they can sort of question him a bit more, but yeah, it was certainly a much more convoluted plan.

Jacqueline Chaiton

I always figured it was the prefects who set the passwords personally, but I definitely like this theory.

S1lm4r1l

I'd imagine they have radio commentary for matches.

sarah4hp

Yes....? I don't understand what you are even asking?

S1lm4r1l

9:25 As far as I'm aware, that's exactly how the Points system works. Students get points for doing well in class. These are then added to the total number of points scored by their house over the Quidditch season. The Quidditch Cup is awarded to the Team that scores the most points in Quidditch throughout the year (the 3 games they play.) This is why Houses invariably end the school year on 300-500 points. Because their Quidditch teams did so much to boost the number of points. Unless of course we're led to believe all students and all houses are awarded more points than are taken away over the course of the year. Which seems unlikely. Percy congratulates Harry on catching the Snitch worth 150 points, but because Slytherin's brooms were able to tell in the match until then, Slytherin scored 10 goals and Gryffindor 0. So the net points gain from that Quidditch match was +50 versus Slytherin. I think that makes sense! 1:33:00 There are different strengths to Love potions, so some are not as strong as others, Love potions are banned at Hogwarts FYI and you're completely right to think of them as being a bit date-rapey. There's a lot of 'setting up' that takes place in books 2 and 3 if you catch my drift. And yeah, it's all very interesting to see these interactions the film teases us with, but doesn't really show.

VeggieGamer

Haha yeah sorry sarah, I got completely confused at the time! XD I really like how you put the squibs has having 'little' magic!

Hawwah

Don't forget Professor Snape is half-blood himself.

Hawwah

I definitely like Percy more than the twins.

sarah4hp

No need to apologize, being confused is fine. Squibs have NO magic, same as a muggle basically. The saying "ALMOST a squib" refers to magical people who have so little magic, and are very bad at magic, as a kind of insult. You are basically telling them that they might as well not even HAVE magic because they are so weak and bad at it that they could basically be considered a squib. Clearly Neville has been told that many times, and sees himself in that light at this point. He tells the others about his family not thinking he even had enough magic to get into Hogwarts at all in book 1, and how pleased they were when he got the letter that he had a place at the school, so... no wonder he has cero self confidence.

Philipp Schäfer

Don't worry about the little mistakes! It can be a bit frustrating of course but in the next episode it has alwaysbeen explained to you and everything is dandy. Don't forget that most of us have read the books alot more often than once and consume other contnent about it.

Thunderbird

Don’t worry about being biased for the Hufflepuffs 😊 I actually think it is pretty cool that you show this much investment and house pride. And honestly I think everyone that took the house quiz and identifies with his house is biased about it. You should hear me talk about Ravenclaw!

Thunderbird

I don't think it is ever really explained but this is actually how I understood it as well. It makes the most sense to me at least :)

Garry (Not Jerry)

Spoilers! We know that in book 3 sir Cadogan makes up loads of passwords so I kind of thought that in the gryffindor common it was the fat lady herself that made up the password. For slytherin - it’s just a wall that opens up so I can’t imagine the wall makes up the password (then again they do have doors that are just pretending to be doors so it’s not that much of a stretch.) “Pure blood” is way too on-the-nose though. The theory of It being a prefect that comes up with it makes a lot of sense.

Garry (Not Jerry)

There’s no way the quidditch points map directly to house points! What if the seekers just agreed not to catch the snitch for ages so that they could rack up the points? Nah I reckon it’s like 50 points per match won or something.

Garry (Not Jerry)

Oh wait I think I misunderstood. You are saying that they are given the amount of their point difference? That makes more sense (although still somewhat gameable IMO)

Diego Zenhäusern

Yeah, I also take it as being either the absolute points or the point difference from a game of Quidditch that is added to the house points. Because in book one we have Harry saying, that them loosing 150 points for sneaking out cost them all the points he gained them in the quidditch match🤔

Diego Zenhäusern

First off, don't worry about making mistakes/ forgetting things! Everyone does that, it's just human! On the thing with Justin going to Eton: I'm very sure that the implication here isn't that wizards dislike muggle schools in principle. It is just, that Justin telling Harry he was supposed to go to Eton, was basically him telling Harry that he was muggleborn. Because a wizard (half or pureblood) wouldn't be supposed to go to a muggle college but to Hogwarts. Also: I think you're definitely onto something when you state that "bad" people are usually portrayed as "ugly" in these books! I used to gloss over this/ make excuses for it when I was younger. But since Rowling has shown her true colours in the whole trans-rights debate, I've really started to notice a lot of little indicators of her prejudices/ biases in these books🤔. Another example would be how she also portrays obesity as a sign of a bad character (with the Dursleys and aunt Marge). But don't get me wrong here: I still think the books are masterpieces and that Rowling, despite being a person with some problematic world views, is a great author...at least in these book's (I haven't read anything else from her, nor do I intend to do in the future). I also think that the overall and obvious message of these books is still one of love and acceptance! But I definitely think that, after having seen a bit of her true colours, one should take this books with a grain of salt and not just excuse/ explain away every problematic thing she writes. P.S. Since you corrected yourself in the book club reading: My name is actually pronounced DiEgo (like the saber-tooth tiger from Ice Age) and not Digo. But I don't really mind either way, so no worries there🙂

Xeph

In regards to the quidditch points and house points thing. They are two entirely separate cups. The points scored in quidditch do matter for the quidditch cup though. Because the winner of the quidditch cup is the team that got the most points and not the team that won the most games. (For some reason, this doesn't make sense, but it's clear this is how it works based on events that come up in the future.) It's never made clear what the 50 house points thing was about. The general assumption people have is that 50 house points are given to the winning team of any game. But frankly I don't think JK Rowling really knew what her intentions were for that sentence, because the house point totals don't really make sense with that.

itsanursething

I wonder if the wizarding world has doctor-patient confidentiality like the muggle world does (or at least in the US it's a HUGE violation for any health care professional to share information about their patients).

Kunzite Blossom

You being confused and a little upset Hermione doesn't go home for Christmas is actually funny because it seems she rarely sees her parents after she goes to Hogwarts. Year 1 she does actually go home for Christmas, and spends all her summer with them BEFORE year 2 starts and even after year 2 she does go with her family. However, after that. Shes always with Ron and Harry for Christmas, whether that be at Hogwarts, the Burrow, or even the Order once that comes around. During summers she seems to go to her parents but then ends up at the Burrow or the Order. I believe she might have went home after year 3 (I can't remember) but it really makes you wonder how much of her life her parents even knew about. Did they know she was ever in danger? I would think they had to otherwise why let their teenage daughter go stay with another family that has a lot of boys in the house?

itsanursething

I think what you were trying to say with the tiers of magic, I interpret more as a spectrum. Some may be talented in all areas some may be talented in one or two, some may just constantly be on the struggle bus, but they all have some magic. On that note, I feel like squibs maybe do have a little bit of magic in them but are unable to tap into it or get it to work. For that matter, muggles too, probably have dormant magic in them as well. How else could super powerful witches and wizards be born to muggle parents? I think it was Goyle's hands that were the size of dinner plates, not his eyes. Although, if he got a face-full of the potion, maybe it was his eyes. Yikes... You made me curious so I looked it up, gargoyles are a form of grotesques that convey water away from a building. I never knew that! To me, the statue outside Dumbledore's office in the movie is a griffin. Once again, love the reactions! I don't care how long they are. You're awesome and I know we all appreciate you doing these :)

Ziro the Hutt

Haha speaking of holograms in Red Dwarf and you mentioning smarmy, Rimmer in that, is the very definition of smarmy!

luckywind

I know it's not related to Harry Potter, but since you mention Danganronpa in this video. I find out a while ago that you had played Danganronpa games but I'm sad the videos got blocked. I hope you can bring it back someday. I'm surprised that you said you had to force yourself to finish DR3 anime. I haven't watch your review video, so I'm going to check it later. Still, it's interesting that I had opposite opinion from you. I actually dislike V3 because it has nothing to do about continuation of DR1 & DR2 story. Also I played V3 first before watching DR3. I admit DR3 it's not that good but I still enjoy watching it because I finally got closure and find out what's going on before DR1. But I still understand if anyone dislike the anime and my feeling was probably biased because I felt bamboozled by ending of V3.

sarah4hp

Very interesting. I guess Percy is more popular than I ever realized 😂

VeggieGamer

Hi lucky! Yeah I will hopefully get them unprivated when I can. I honestly loved the first chapter of V3 and enjoyed most of the rest of the game, but I fully admit that last chapter was TERRIBLE (apart from the fact my fav character survived XD). And for DR3, yeah it started to get very tough for me to get through. It definitely has some great high points though! And I agree the closure was excellently done! :)

H

About your confusion about the Ron/Riddle comment from Frederique Gillespie: Ron joked, as some pointed out, that maybe Riddle got the award for special services to the school because he killed Myrtle. It's a harsh joke, but even though that wasn't what actually happened, there is still SOME truth to it since it IS true that Riddle killed Myrtle (through the basilisk). Great video as always, Veggie! Still think it would be better to watch Fantastic Beasts after finishing the books, but I probably should shut up about that now since you seem to have decided to watch it soon! I think you'll really like it, tbf. Oh, and I think your hufflepuff pride is very funny (even though I'm Ravenclaw), so you should keep it up.

Rebecca May

Really enjoyed the book club Veggie, as always! Just sad that I missed out commenting on this one since I was away on holiday. As an extension to your point about "bad" characters being described as ugly (which is a very valid point, and something that makes me a tad uncomfortable in these books, no matter how much I love them), it's funny how readers who hate Severus will swear up and down that he's described as ugly in the books... but he never is. Sure, you could argue his characteristics as they're described might not add up to someone being conventionally attractive, but that's a matter of perspective. That being said, there are actually not many characters who are marked out as being specifically "handsome" or "beautiful", either, which sort of balances out the whole thing. Off the top of my head, I can only think of Fleur, Sirius, Cedric, Lily and Gilderoy being described in completely flattering terms. And, interestingly, Tom Riddle.

Benjamin Hütz

Your thought about dark wizards have something against well educated muggles got me smiled. Its not about that in that scene. Justin said it was planned for him to go to Eton, which means he is muggleborn and therefore "mudblood" like Hermione... in the eyes of dark wizards he dont belong to hogwarts

Garry (Not Jerry)

‘“Fifty points will be taken from gryffindor” “Fifty?” Harry gasped - they would lose the lead, the lead he’d won in the last quidditch match. “Fifty points each” said Professor Mcgonagall. We can’t really gain any insight from that comment because all we know is that 50 points would have made them lose their lead. Not lose all the points they gained from the match. ‘A hundred and fifty points lost. That put gryffindor in last place. In one night, he’s ruined any chance gryffindor had had for the house cup’

Loveinthehat

I agree it is messed up but the thing is tho, the bad guys are either ugly or extremely good looking. So there’s both like in real life, like the worst villains who do the most horrible stuff in the series are good looking.

Loveinthehat

Also bellatrix as well is someone known as really beautiful but her time in Azkaban ruined her looks a bit. I understand it’s uncomfortable for bad guys to have ugly traits but Tom riddle and bellatrix, who are some of the most awful people in the series are good looking.

Rebecca May

I did forget Bellatrix, my bad! I do think Rowling's writing isn't as straightforward as "ugly = bad" or "beautiful = good" (hence my comment above), but she does have an unfortunate tendency to sometimes ridicule certain characters for their physical characteristics, when their actions should be the focus.

Diego Zenhäusern

I mean, which of the bad guys are really good looking? If you're refering to Voldemort as a kid/ young adult: Yeas, that's true! But Rowling is also making a distinct point of him getting increasingly ugly and even inhuman looking. And while I actually quite like the idea in this one instance (Voldemort basically destroying his own body and soul by getting deeper and deeper into the dark arts) I definitely think it is problematic when most of your main villains/ unpleasant persons (e.g. Umbridge, Snape, Voldemort, Greyback, the Carrows, Crabbe and Goyle, Sirius for the time he was antagonistic, Mundungus) are ugly (and most of them not because they were dabbling the dark arts). But as I said: I don't think the books are horrible because of that, I just think it is important to acknowledge such tendencies when they emerge🤔

Ghost

Veggie, I'd love to see your reaction to the Trailer for the Hogwarts Legacy game, if you have done a vid on it I think I may have missed it.

Annette Elliott

Tom knew he'd go to the orphanage in the summer. He just doesn't want the school to close due to Myrtle's death and be stuck at the orphanage permanently.

Rebecca May

He has done one, it's on YouTube :)

Katie

Lockhart is described as good looking and he's a bad guy and Slughorn is overweight and he's a good guy. I'm sure there are more examples just can't think of them right now

Diego Zenhäusern

I mean, I personally agree with you that Slughorn is a good guy. But he has also many character flaws (manipulativ, collects people, prideful etc.) and knowingly witholds important information from Dumbledore. And I actually know multiple people that don't see him as a decent/ likeable person (even though I personally don't dislike him). So once again obesity/ ugliness is paired with an, at the very least, quaestionable character. However, I can't really argue against Lockhart's case, you got me there! That said, my argument isn't really that Rowling only portraits bad guys as ugly and vice versa. It is more that there are certain tendencies that can be observed and one should be wary of. But I think the fact that all of us in this comment thread don't seem to think that "ugliness" and "bad character" are linked in real life also goes to show that the overall message of this book series is still clearly one of equality and acceptance🙂 So I definitely don't want to suggest that the books are horrible/ try to hammer home such a message at any cost! Just that there are definitely some problematic aspects, that I used to ignore/ overlook in the past but came to notice in the light of recent events.

Mordimer

The thing that you think movie did better - I think it did worse. I don't think Ron and Hermione would be scared of Harry. They trust him completely. They know him for a while. They've all risk their lives together before.
