Fuck fuck fuck. I can’t believe we’re here. Last 6 episodes are about to go hard. Congratulations on making it this far. You’re in the endgame now brother.

Man this episode is soul crushing and so well crafted and paced. Not only is it a genius writing decision on how they managed to intertwine the lawyer plot and the cartel plot at the end of this ep so seamlessly and making complete sense (Lalo thought of Saul when he spotted the cockroach, because that is what he refered Saul as to Kim in Bagman), but it makes Howard's character and conclusion the most tragic one in this universe imo, the only one that comes close is Mike's conclusion in Breaking Bad and I remember you getting really affected by that scene too. Howard didn't deserve any of this... he got caught between two brothers' feud where one was his career-long colleague which used Howard as Jimmy's punching bag and the former went along with it because he didn't want to ruin Jimmy's and Chuck's relationship by keeping the truth from Jimmy; that his brother is actually the one who means everything Howard tells Jimmy. Howard also thinks he contributed to Chuck's suicide by forcing him out of HHM and even paying him out of his own pocket so Chuck gets his share of the firm's money. In 4x1 Jimmy even shoved his guilt onto Howard after the latter admited that he feels guilty, and says "Well Howard, I guess that's your cross to bear." Howard goes to therapy for his guilt, depression and marriage issues, he has debt, and on top of that he simultaneously has to deal with all the shit Jimmy and Kim throws at him: bowling balls, hookers, drugs, embarassing him in front of colleagues and friends, etc. And one might think that after all that, Howard would walk the same path as Chuck (suicide), and he even said the same thing Chuck said in Chicanery: "I'm not crazy!" (which I thought was a really cool reference, showing that Jimmy and Kim ruined them both). Despite all that, Howard shows how mentally strong he really is to Jimmy and Kim and tells them that he will be okay and he basically vowed to dedicate his life to making sure everybody would know the truth. Howard was a man who never gave up despite the wind not blowing his direction. Unfortunately, Lalo had to enter the apartment and kills Howard in such a brutally real and unceremonial way, just because Howard was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Top 5 of the show imo.

I remember starting this show and wondering which of the new characters (not seen in BRBA) would end up dying, and Howard was always on the very bottom of that list. He's basically the face of the "law show" side of BCS and seeing him get killed by Lalo felt like a crossover episode. It was the last thing I ever expected to happen and I'm in awe of how well it works.

This is the one everyone's been waiting for. "Plan and Execution." What a name, what an episode. This is the climax of the show. You could write a book analyzing everything they did but I would just like to point out three details that I think about every time I watch this episode. The trick Howard shows the intern at the start, spinning the can so it doesn't "pop" is mirrored in the way Lalo puts on a suppressor in the end to lessen the sound of the pop when he shoots Howard. If you remember in the Bagman episode, when Kim meets Lalo and expresses how she's worried about Jimmy, he says "He's like a cockroach, born survivor you know?" - seeing the cockroach in the sewer reminds him of Jimmy and this is why he decides to go to their house. My favorite one of the lot has to be the fact that, even though we know that Lalo is a stone cold killer and has killed like a dozen people by this point, we've never actually seen him take a life on screen, not even in his assassination attempt really - so even though we know how dangerous he is, we're still hoping that it won't go down the way we fear it will. This show is so good at making you gaslight yourself. You know how it ends, and it somehow makes you pretend you don't. I don't think I'll watch a better written show than this in the rest of my life.

It's so crazy how Chuck's presence is felt throughout this episode. He is watching over Howard as he has his own meltdown where he sounds completely insane but we know every word he's saying is true. Then his dead body hitting the table reminded me of when Chuck hit that counter.
