In the final scene (flashback), you can see something drop into the ocean.

Cuz this was 2008, people were speculating that this might be a 2nd attempt at an American Godzilla remake (after the box office bomb in 1998)...not totally wrong since that ended up happening just 6 years later. "Clover" (the monster's name) was an attempt to make an American kaiju, which had not been done in years. Or at least to great success like "King Kong"...other monster films like "Q: The Winged Serpent" is more of a cult classic kaiju. I think there are conflicting origins for "Clover". I think 1 writer or the director said it came from the ocean & it suddenly woke up...also it's apparently an infant which explains its erratic movement. However, that object that fell in the ocean in the last scene where Rob & Beth are happy might indicate it's from space. Matt Reeves who directed this also recently directed "The Batman". And Primate, you might recognize Hud (actor T.J. Miller) as Deadpool's unofficial sidekick Weasel from the "Deadpool" movies. Also those things that fell off "Clover" were likely parasites...it's like if ur fleas fell off & attacked other creatures their own size...not the 1st time this happened in a kaiju movie: when Toho partly rebooted Godzilla in the '80s in "The Return of Godzilla" (released in the U.S. as "Godzilla 1985"), the 1st monster that appeared in that movie was a similar parasite that presumably came off Godzilla onto a Japanese fishing boat, gruesomely killing the crew.
