Hello everyone! =D

Victor here bringing you some more behind the scenes stuff.

This time (as I said last time) I asked William to show off either some kind of sound or music. And he made this little video on how he sampled and used a guitar riff for a song in Gori =P.

To accompany this I asked William some questions about the music for Gori that I hope are interesting.

What are some of the main inspirations for your music in Gori?

- One inspiration source I listen to and watch a bunch is Mick Gordon's work, mainly the things he did for DOOM. Like he did a talk on GDC about how he created the music and some interesting techniques he used. Savant is one of my favorite musicians so maybe I got some more melodic stuff from there. I also listened to a bunch of Panda Eyes for some of the dubstepy notes xD.

How do you start your music making process, what's the first thing you do?

-I noodle around on the midi keyboard finding some nice fitting cord to start from.

Do things you make for Sound also end up in your Music?

-Yes, but it also works both ways. Sometimes I make things for music that end up in sound as well. Like I made some drum fills for the score screen. I now use those drums in the music too.

What sound effect engine do we use?

-FMOD Studio

On a very simple level, what is FMOD xD?

-It's a kind of middlestep between... programming and Sound. It's a tool to implement sound into a game with things like acoustics, spatialization, dropoff, effect etc. without the need to actually program everything yourself. It's like an interface you might say, just like most other things in Unreal that let me work more without a programmer / better together with one.

Between Music and Sound which of the two takes most of your time?

Sound. Both in design and implementation, you know you have to make the sound and then tweak them to feel good. And then you have to put them into the game and make them work the right way and yeah back and forth.

Could you tell us a funny behind the soundz thing?

Frank's hoverboard sound is a train driving by sound, modulated into a hoverboardy space sound. And the Unicorns is a mix between Caroline making one liners, John's mom's cat  and a broken toy horse. Here's cool image:

Do you have any tips for people with a music background where to learn a bit of the more technical aspects for things like FMOD?

Start by maybe start to make your own sound's from scratch and start tweaking synths to get into sound design. We learned most of FMOD from School so... xD I don't have any specific tutorials. But look up some tutorials on Youtube and set up a simple project and start playing around with it, set up scenarios of like something that might be in a game etc.

What's your favorite Color?

-~Green~ (=O Did you hear that people!?!? OMG!! What a scoop!)

So that's about it for this time =P. As usual I hope this was interesting for you people xD. And I know this is kinda glancing over a lot of terms and topics, I'm planning to maybe do some more technical deep dives with William to further and more closely show off what he does =P. If you people wanna hear more about this stuff of course xD.
Anyhow, that's it for me. Next time I'm gonna show some thing's about pickups and my 3D Worklfow =P.

Cya all laterz, and continue having an awesome summer! (still too hot for me xD)
