After almost 4 years... all the characters, including good and enemies, are rigged, skinned and in engine! All of the riggs are handmade by me and later on animated. And i love every single one of them!
What is rigging and skinning? Long story short:
I use a program called Maya which let me create the rigg which is basically a characters skeleton. This will allow me to bend arms and legs and so on.
Skinning is the part in which i attach the muscles and skin from the 3D model to the skeleton. Deciding which parts to follow the skeleton when bending a joint.
If you look at the beginning of the video you will see the skinning in the form of "painting" areas and "erasing color".
After rigging and skinning, its time to throw that bad boy into the engine!
We use Unreal 5 which i highly recommend! After the character is in the engine and got their textures (made by our very talenter 3D artist John) its time to animate and make them come to life!
I also use Maya for animation, using the rigg I've made. All characters i Gori: Cuddly Carnage are hand-animated by me. That means for this project we decided not to use motion capture. But more about animation later in an other post!
Then I export the movement/ animation to a FBX which i attach to the character in the engine.
TADA! Rigged, Skinnad and Animated character!
Hope you enjoyed this post and i hope even more you'll enjoy the characters in Gori: Cuddly Carnage// Caroline
