Brace when you diagnose modern Judaism as Holocaust Judaism, this reminded me of what Rabbi Shaul Magid called Judeo-Pessimism: the belief antisemitism is eternal and there is nothing we can do about it. I grew up in a modern orthodox religious Zionist environment and I will absolutely attest to both of these descriptions as being accurate. The more I’ve learned about the history and development of Judaism, the more I’ve realized that the way we were taught to think about all this stuff as kids is actually a pretty recent invention as far as the ~2500 year history of Judaism goes.

I’m the kind of elder zoomer who was alive for 9/11 yet I don’t remember it (even tho I was 4 and probably should?), but I do very much remember watching the “war on terror” everyday on the news with my parents. I can remember the feeling of being a kid who was learning about the American civil and revolutionary wars for the first time, at the same time I was watching these “wars” that we were supposedly fighting in on tv everyday, which was confusing for a kid because ur learning in social studies what it was like when the US was at war, but we’re also at war now? But it doesn’t seem like we’re at war but also I’m just a kid so maybe I wouldn’t know? And then the wars never seem to end so this is just what being American is like??
