First, this is a good episode. Whenever Ukrainian nazis are mentioned, it’s viewed as Russian propaganda, which it obviously is not. Second, I’m really looking forward to the day you guys do an episode or two on Turkish fascism and leftist militant organizations in Turkey, and other parts of West Asia as it relates to Kurdish nationalism.

I'm biased, but Ukraine should be broken up. Southern & Eastern sections that speak Russian & Orthodox are just Russian. Central Ukraine which is Orthodox but speak Ukrainan is Ukrainan. Lastly Western part that speaks Ukrainian and is Catholic are Galician.

Yes, an episode on the activities of the Ustaše in Australia would be interesting. They did a few bombings in the 70s and there are still some parts of the Croatian diaspora in Australia that celebrate Pavelic and the NDH. In some cities there'll be two Croatian clubs - the Ustaše one and the non-Ustaše one. Some of the Četniks made it over here as well.

Re: SS Blutgruppen Tattoos One could get the tattoo if one spend time in a Waffen-SS field hospital. There were a number of German servicemen who had never served in the Waffen-SS, as documented by their Soldbuch (Wage booklet, detailing where you served), but received the tattoo when they were treated in Waffen-SS field hospitals which were also responsible for tattoing new Waffen-SS recruits. You would hwoever not be able to get that tattoo unless you served in the Wehrmacht in some combat capacity. Also not all SS members did have the tattoo, only those operating in some kind of combat position (lots of bureaucrats in the SS; none of those would have had the tattoo).

Ukrainian Canadian here: my family always spoke highly about a relatives vague struggle to “escape communism” in the 30s and how he went on to become an important figure in a “community organization”. Did some cursory googling at 14 and got a big surprise (yes, he has his own article in the encyclopedia of ukraine).

I just began the episode and I am absolutely aghast that ante pavelic is the first person that’s discussed. There are a number of letters from both Nazi officials who visited Croatia and the Yugoslav royalists (četnici) who talk about him keeping a jar of eyelids of some of his most choice victims. Also, sorry to be a stickler but it’s not the Nazis that separated Yugoslavia, the king made a pact with Nazis that they could have free reign of the country when the axis basically invaded or was about to invade. The king was then overthrown after a revolution on march 27 - I don’t know the palace intrigue of the coup, but in my Serbian history class we were told that it was by “the people” Croats decided to collaborate anyway so they split off and their faction is called Ustaše. They deserve their own expose cuz of the sheer brutality that I won’t get into more here. The rest of Yugoslavia was conquered by the Nazis and two factions of resistance formed: the četnk group, who were loyal to the disgraced king and were trying to reinstate him. They dabbled in Nazi collaboration. The second were the partisans, led by Tito, who was responsible for pushing the Nazis out of the territory and was then rewarded by being yugoslavias “benevolent” dictator until his death in 1980. One of the justifications that Serb nationalist paramilitaries used against the Croats in the 90s was that the Ustaše were still around and would kill the Serbs (the Christian orthodox population - religion and alphabet are the only difference between Bosniaks Serbs and Croats) in Krajina.

Its 1/2 a joke 1/2 serious. Ukraine is in a strange situation of being mixed religiously, language wise, & geopolitically. This is only worsend with the early Soviet Union redrawing the borders to add traditionally Russian territory into the Ukrainian SSR, and the political power Western Galicians have over the rest of Ukraine in directing the countries politics. Ukraine as a state *could* be one that if handled like Kazakhstan or Lebanon coexistence could've been found eventually in a prewar environment or like the US or Germany were denominations are mostly irrelevant to politics. However due to NATOs wants to pull Ukraine out of Русский Мир, and then use it as a sink for Russia it made the stakes to high for Russia to ignore. It isn't about religious denomination, but instead the geopolitics behind it. I assume that we won't see Russia cross the Carpthians anytime soon so a Ukrainian state will still exist after this war. Its just more what will that state look like when it begins to run into difficulties.
