Tom Clarke

A very TrueAnon few days.

Sean Daugherty

Brace was being held in the bowels of a fishing trawler in the Mediterranean

sono

getting this notif while a french techbro was libsplaining syria to me is just divine

Ryan Fox

My girlfriend is gonna hate me thanks guys!

Go'Thrak

Brace truly is Mister East-Meets-West

Blank

Welcome back Bracey 💗

Reece Coren

FINALLYYYY 💗 you guys are the best thank you so much!!!

Michael S. Judge

This Syria shit is so bad. Dog this is SO bad

Michael S. Judge

the "Al Qaeda finally admits it loves Israel" version of Syria, not this podcast, which is good (I assume, I'm only 5:02 in)

Rufus Blumpfoch

Curious that "The Ghost of Aleppo" found his way back to New York only after rebel victory was assured 🤔

Mango Bolsonaro

Post-Assad Syria. Brought to you by the creators of Post-Soviet Afghanistan, Post-Saddam Iraq, & Post-Gaddafi Libya

Ben Clarkson

The future is failed states at your border. Lol. Buy my book.

Reece Coren

all i can think of is adam curtis in hypernormalization saying bashar al assad was never supposed to become president

Demented Avenger

Yes! Everyone wants to be Macedonia so bad that they won't let Macedonia be Macedonia!

Tristan

Macedonia did take all of it that one time

Blank

Thanks for this analysis! At the risk of sounding annoying, I can imagine going over this stuff brought up a lot of stuff for Brace even though he doesn’t show it much. Hope you take care/YC and Liz take care of you 🫡

shante

Mama a gay girl in Damascus behind you

Tim O'

This might never have happened if America had elected Gary "What Is Aleppo" Johnson in 2016.

Chachi uday

Turkey and greece should merge and name the new country greasy turkey

brace where did you play in altoona? lions den? aldo’s? someone’s backyard? i was born and raised in altoona, moved to pittsburgh in 2010 but i’m back often. thank you 😎

Theo

thank you very much, i needed to figure out how to explain this to my wives

PineBat Jo

I can’t wait for the episode on Luigi Mangioni. The first man to unite the American working class against the bourgeoisie

Ben Peltz

My girlfriend is Kurdish and from Istanbul. She's gonna love this one

Sam Zeng

The Kurdish oil rights was secured by a American firm called Delta Crescent. Wild insane bull shit if you dig into it. TA should do a segment on the dark oil business of the US. Talk about seizing Iranian oil on the open ocean and murky dealings of small oil firms across the world, with the explicit support of the US state of course.

TrueAnonPod

Episode 93 “Syria II” is about this; however the Delta Crescent contract never went through.

Chris

What happened in Syria? I was to busy talking to beautiful woman

MC

I can’t recommend enough Batatu’s “Syria’s Peasantry” which goes into the struggle of Land Reform in Syria from independence up until the 80s/90s. An excellent book that also illustrates in detail the political and ideological struggle during that time. Seale’s biography about Hafez is also great and worth reading.

Tim O'

At 4:10, when Liz said "We have much to discuss," I locked in so hard

JK47

White Helmets! Everyone remember the White Helmets?

Tim O'

"French techbro libsplains Syria" is a scenario that sounds horrifying beyond my darkest imagination.

Gallo Altanero

First time I went to Syria I also was with Red Crescent guys. But that civil war started in Lebanon I believe and spilt over. I was up for the Nahr el Bared conflict in 2007 and it had just finished. But to my luck I ended up with some pretty insane although kind Sunni Jihadist guys who had their wives get us tea. And was shown video after video of them shooting grenades into their neighbors apartments in Tripoli. So my out was saying I just came to see the beach. “Sure I’ll take you….just hide these bullets in your towel for the check point.” Goddamnit. The ocean was insane and I surf but went through with it.

Big Problem

Hearing brace describe Deir ez zor as the Wild West is really funny to me as someone who’s first time in Syria was about a year after brace and who participated in those operations. I’d describe the operation itself more as a Three Stooges skit set in the Wild West where Larry moe and curly all get stuck in a saloon door desperately trying to get to a plot of land with that good old Texas Tea in it. Basically was just a mad dash to grab as much land from the SAA as possible. Lot of people got injured or killed from mines. The unit I was attached to at the time even pushed into a sandstorm and got ambushed because we were in such a hurry. Looking back on it and reflecting after all these years makes my feelings on the SDF pretty complicated.

Lilian

Give ur girlfriend a little kiss from me (also Kurdish)

if we formed a coalition of people who hate turkey at this point: china, russia, iran, kurds, armenians, greeks, some arabs, we got well over a billion people, we could totally take em out. your days are numbered!

Matthew

finally…… classico etc…. ya love to see it

TrueAnonPod

Yeah Deir Ezzor I think was a signal things were getting weird. The mines man--killed way way more people than I think anyone realizes. Lots of three stooges all down the line, it's just everyone's lucky that all sides are three stooges.

Brent

Brace, when you say “interacted with” the regular Syrian army… ?

Chachi uday

Yeah why not. Turkey greece can power your silly hippie car.

Greg Kestenbaum

New word unlocked for Brace: “appreciable”

Special Adeline

Any fans of "us, judging your assadist asses" around here

Doug Cartel

"Then he shoved his fingers in his-in my mouth, and fell asleep to Kurdish rap blasting at full volume" - Brace, Chapo, 2016 or maybe it was 2017

square coats

Jolani said they're down to work with "israel", Hamas made a statement directed at the Syrian people, not at Jolani/HTS, and Hezb was kicking isr's ass so badly they called uncle aka so-called ceasefire

SlamPig

EVERYONE for the love of God please Google: "Altoona style pizza"

James

The way Twitter and the Syrian Civil War broke my brain in 2013... war is hell

James Staub

I was really waiting for the Gary Jonson "what is aleppo" soundbite

Norbur

I'm glad you think you'll be here in 3-5 years

Nathan Wijnja

Any good book recs on the conflict?

TrueAnonPod

Khaled Mashal has made a pretty forceful statement in support of the new Syrian regime. Julani hasn't afaik said that explicitly but his people have been quite clearly avoiding the topic of the Israeli incursion.

Alex

As a socialist with Greek heritage, TrueAnon is the podcast for me

ResilientBastard

there was the PDPA for sure, and the Soviets decided to provide it support, but it’s weird to consider Afghanistan at this time “Soviet”. Like the other regimes you mention, the Khalq was an Afghan phenomenon, not some sort of puppet state. That’s basically neocon propaganda.

big cheese

what’s the song at 23:45

Pigeon

I can’t get over how he was the LEAST stupid, most normal Libertarian candidate. And he didn’t even know what an aleppo was

Big Problem

“The three stooges but they all love shitting on the floor” is a pretty succinct way to describe your average QSD tabur now that I think about it

Adub

vile

Major Pisano

I’ve always imagined when AQ or ISIS does a “franchise” , it’s kinda more like a biker gang (motorcycle club) having other funny off shoots like how HA or other funny bikers do. Affiliates so to speak but still rock their HA vest on ride days, kinda thing.

Niko

jolani sounds like a syrian gerry adams

Zach

Twinks can be tall but Bashar is an otter

Antipaganda

It's like Indiana Jones, he had to screw a beautiful Syrian colonel to get the blue key so he could open up the YPG level.

Natalie

me listening to this episode and also pretending to be a girl with scoliosis: welcome back brace

Chapo Bath House

Gonna have to come back to this in 6 mo on the right ratio of edibles and Dexedrine to try and make sense of this. Peace

Chapo Bath House

I'm still thinking about that Guardian op ed about the tragic Aleppo pepper shortage

Haroun Haroun

How to talk to Girls like Yossi from Hertzliya at the PsyTrance rave at Ocean Shores. 'Hey girl, do you like to f@ck real Sabra men, not the Woody Allens from Balaclava, the emetz men? Bohenna!'

eduard karpoev

I'm Russian so I was a Wagnercel for a bit while also being a YPG fan because of Brace and the Rojava stuff. Every side of this war always has intresting stuff from Wagner sticking a gun in there SAA generals mouth telling him if they lost Palmyra a 3rd time they kill him themselves saying he was on occupational hazard. Our favorite nonpolitical journalist Mr. Pisspiggrandad. The weird cult of the "Lion of Damascus". White Helmets. "Moderate Rebels". Etc I abhorr HTS & Turkey, but hope for the Syrian peoples sake they can find lasting peace

Pash Vlahov

Can you do this but for gay guys

Clammy_Damp

Can somebody who edits videos please put the Isis Nasheed over the Dwarves from the hobbit singing Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold?

Kiel Cone

So are you taking back western Anatolia and its lowlands or not?

Kiel Cone

Forgot The Balkans

Gabby S

i don’t have a car whiteboard so i’m writing this all directly on my windshield. running out of space. can’t see.

SHD

Brace B - your sharing of that very personal anecdote did not go without notice (or appreciation). Thank you for being brave enough to share it. My heart breaks for you and for those you lost.

Gallo Altanero

Also word of advice for any listener. I had to go to I think every Palestinian refugee camp. Meet the PFLP leader or ask for them. Also learn Arabic.

Hank Horchatta

It's crazy that after 13 years of new factions entering the war, the SAA has been the only one to be fully eliminated from the conflict.

Blake

He would do that

Tristan Cannon

I'm gonna use this horrifying knowledge when I get back on dating apps. Anyway, I think this is worth unlocking because a lot of what's going around online in wake of the regime collapse has been very reflexive. It's valuable to hear someone on the left who has personal stake in Syria's future, so thanks for that.

gocka

Thanks for making this, i feel much more confident mumbling to women at house parties about the Kurdish struggle now

fugitivedocument

My fam comes from Dersim. I also hunt keklik on my spare time.

Christine Mourani

You should unlock this!! The people need to know 👂

Quinn

Why are you talking to French people?

Tim O'

In the Libertarian presidential primary in 2016 or 2020, Gary was the only candidate who was in favor of requiring people to have driver's licenses in order to drive cars. He got booed at their sad little convention for saying it.

pq

strong cold open. hardest I've laughed since coindexter.

Sikander Khare

Amazing he went through the whole episode but scarcely any mention or explanation of the alliance between SDF and the US/Saudi, the decision to allow the US to take the oil in SDF occupied territory, why their alliance with the US has not prevented attacks from US/Turkey backed groups?

pizzapope

Forgot already since I read it back in January, but If We Burn also references the Gay Girl in Damascus right?

billbo

True anon rule number something. Always pay your troops. Why's it confusing because it's been over a decade of just mercenaries fighting each other.

sono

unfortunately challenging to avoid when living in france

Michael S. Judge

There's gonna be a new race! The kids are gonna start it up! They're all gonna mutate! The kids are saying "Atatürk!"

Richard Cochnar

Periodic reminder that the schemers at TrueAnon are planning an April Fool’s podcast. I will not be fooled AGAIN next year.

TrueAnonPod

We covered the oil issue in its own episode w Matthew Petti but we’ll probably do an episode once things change w Turkey/HTS/etc and AANES

Ivana

You said Russians have "numerous" military bases in Syria. They have exactly one (1) airbase and one (1) refueling dock on the coast, but call it military base if you want. That's two (2) in total. No mention of US occupation of Syria's oilfields and wheat fields. Very CNNish but I'm sure it'll impress numerous girls.

Luis

Call them....Grurk

Tan Tan

They got me good last year, then I started listening to the intro on this year's and remembered what day it was.

Ryan

Great episode, any good books on Syrian civil war to read and dive in a little more?

Tan Tan

Hezb (like usual) managed to get their licks in during the IDF's half-hearted ground invasion and repelled further incursion, but the extensive air strikes did a huge number on them and also just the thousands of Lebanese civilians. I wouldn't exactly say they were kicking their ass, as much as i wish that were the reality.

Richard Cochnar

They’ve gotten me every fucking year they’ve done one.

Gallo Altanero

I keep commenting but I do recall trying to get out of Syria and had no money (I still have a lot now probably useless) * and walking around looking for a hotel or something to get back to Ramallah and some jewelry shop guy was like: why are you running around, and he got me money somehow through the sanctions in Damascus. I left the next day and the Syrian border guard who didn’t let me in 3 times was like…oh you made it in.

Vincent

All these allusions to "The Belden Plan" and CHK-CHK sound effects and now extra judicial executions are bad all the sudden.

Vincent

My first thought was "What a fucking idiot" but then I remembered that the exact same thing happened to me.

fugitivedocument

“[G]et out of Deir ez-Zur, get rid of the Americans, and focus on what you’re good at fight the fucking Turks!”

TrueAnonPod

The Russians have a ton of bases in Syria but we may be using different definitions of bases; they have two permanent installations. We covered the U.S. occupation of the oil fields in Episode 93 and talk a bit about them in this episode but mostly it’s about HTS/Assad. I think of important note too is the relatively isolated U.S. installation at Tanf cause those rebels linked up with Southern Front & “took” Damascus

wailing ken jennings

can anyone tell me if brace got the cameo i sent him from michael rapaporr? ive been calling the tip line for days.

Christopher Price

yeah, they had an amazing ground game, but couldn't protect southern Beirut from the IAF, so lost a lot of legitimacy from that.

Ivana

Yes, definitions are important. The US also has a unique definition of freedom and democracy, also of human rights.

christoph.s

Thank you so much for that episode! My coworker and friend here in Austria is Syrian he came in 2015 (on year later his wife and kids) He is Sunni, but from Latakia (where they are not the majority) He hates Assad ( he was a grocery store clerk and the secret police knocked all of his teeth out after a protest he was in) When the offensive started he gave his remaining family there, all the money he could so they will be ready to move. He does not trust the 'Rebels' one bid. Although he is relived Assad is gone.

Lulu

That Nasheed went hard - shukran brother YC.

Sarah Rea

Yo. Can I claim the artistic rights to that rom-com? Obviously it will NOT be romantic if it's a man explaining Syria to a girl but damn, I recognize how horrible it is that this is how my psyche works but just mix-o-match the movie Before Sunrise (Juli Deeply and wank face) with the dialogue of this ep...

Axel H.

As someone who was actually 10 when the Syrian Civil War started, I appreciate the detailed overview in this ep. Best Syria breakdown I’ve heard so far.

Emry

Appreciate you guys for covering this ❤️ dinner conversation over the holidays with my girlfriend’s Lebanese father about to go crazy

What’s the deal with the drones

Michael Barrett

Proposal for two more Patreon tiers: 1. Brace deep cuts on Syria/Kurds and 2. Liz's NBA takes (we can only choose one of the two)

Lotte Mitchell Reford

Did anyone catch the name of the person Brace said who has a good article about the KPP in the Bekaa Valley in the 1980 Lebanese Civil War?

Your Mum

Hey guys love from Aotearoa!

Haroun Haroun

Can someone help me add these Podcasts to my Pdocast Republic app? Copying the link dont work.

Jolani was actually born in Saudi Arabia because his family was displaced from Golan Heights i n 1967, his family didn't return to Syria until 1989

sne

glad the mine didn’t go off i feel like the world really needs racial jake

utolso

brace fought with the Syrian Democratic Forces in the syrian civil war in the 2010s

Chapo Bath House

My Polish grandmother was a single issue voter, and that issue was hating Macedonia. No one knows why.

projotce

Was good and painful to listen to this episode. Half the leftist guys (exclusively guys) I knew were thinking aloud plans to go to Rojava/DAANES for about two years and then everyone including me forgot around the time you mention the bloodbath in southern Syria. We're so fucking lost.

projotce

It just feels bad cuz there's only so much you can do, if anything. Hearing you talk about what you realized would happen before the 2019 campaign helped with that feeling even though it sounded like it hurt to talk about, thank you for this

Lars
