I’m a high school teacher. Out of my 50 or so students maybe 7 of them are illiterate (by no fault of their own.) All of them have borderline indiscernible handwriting. They spell words in SMS language “u know, cus, wut, gonna”, but none of them can sustain enough attention to read a full chapter of a book. To be honest, I was a total fuck up as a kid, so I get it. But what’s striking is that I also teach Chinese students online on the weekends, and middle school Chinese students can read high school American literature and can write 3 page book reports with MLA citations. The future is red.

This doesn't matter. Most beer bottles are reused. There are weird sizes, but whatever is around is usually a brown size that the local Budweiser distributor does. They boil them and the label falls off, then they reuse them. I lived above a beer distributor in Bushwick. You might recognize these in the green plastic palettes. If you work as a barback (me long ago!) they make you save everything possible, so you get a good deal from the distributor. Many bespoke IPAs are in Budweiser bottles. They can't afford to make their own. Maybe the Anchor Steam experience is a little different. Those are weird bottles, iirc.

Also the stuff about what they call the "West Point Conspiracy" is pretty compelling, how the Union army leadership was sabotaging itself to preserve "the Union as it was" (slavery). I'm super late to this, but thought I might chime in. Long time listener here, I was a deb at the most exclusive/secret ball in the country (in the last ten years). Not writing to try to glorify it, I did it because my family forced me to and I was still a kid that didn't fully understand the history. Happy to talk about the crypto-romanticism of the antebellum south as it exists today as I experienced it. As long as I can keep it anon. This stuff still very much exists, it's just even more secretive than you think it is. (If you are wondering how secret, the date each year is secret, and they have a strict no-phones rule. Photographs are frowned upon and I'm not supposed to acknowledge it exists.)
