I used to argue with my liberal mom about this when she was reading White Fragility; the only reason Fortune 500 firms were paying Robin DiAngelo $40k a pop for her office lady struggle sessions is so in the event of an employee discrimination suit they can say "Look, we paid for the most anti-racist training on the market, so either this couldn't have happened or we're certainly not liable". I.e., Robin DiAngelo's only function is to *reduce* the rights of Black workers.

Facebook marketplace has supplanted craigslist for selling crap and FB groups have become the defacto alternative to forums for hobbies as well as a communication method of local IRL groups. Many small towns around the country use FB basically as a homepage and communicate to the public through it. All this sucks and I hate it but it definitely has worked its way into being a utility for people and every day it captures more and more of that utility in many millions of people's lives. This is pretty under-discussed and covered because most of the people who write about this stuff proudly don't use facebook. It's akin to an online Walmart in that it's role in American life is bigger than anyone can ever imagine but no asshole at the New Yorker or NYT wants to cover it because it's a part of society they would rather not think about.

Similar age. I used to live in NYC and before that I lived in flyover country. None of my friends from NYC ever use it except to promote gofundmes or some other kind of donation thing. Fly over friends is a different story, they definitely actively use it. However I don't see much of that since I clicked to ignore every FB friend I have so my feed is just groups posts. The most pernicious use of it is for schools and towns making public announcements. Since there isn't any local newspapers anymore it's probably the most effective tool they have at their disposal but it sure is sad.

DEI departments are, in theory, meant to facilitate diversification of a groups demographics. In colleges, DEI departments work with admissions offices for outreach to non-white communities. In corporations, DEI departments work with HR to ensure that prejudice is not corrupting the hiring process. DEI departments also oversee anti-discrimination training. They also manage community events meant to celebrate and include non-white cultures within the institution. For example, DEI departments may work to coordinate with student affinity groups on campuses to ensure they have the resources necessary to host cultural holiday events. DEI departments also deal with acts of discrimination within the community. They counsel the various disciplinary bodies that are investigating and adjudicating hate crimes or harassment. DEI departments within institutions are efforts to take action towards combatting systemic and interpersonal discrimination as well as to facilitate a culture that celebrates diversity rather than homogeneity. That said, these groups often either serve no effective function and or they are simply used as props to present a certain image about the organization. However, Liz’s loathing over DEI is disheartening. Trueanon, as much as I love you guys, you rarely ever platform non-white guests and you rarely ever cover non-white stories. Even guests who’ve come on to speak about historical events that profoundly impacted, say, Black Americans such as the emergence of white Supremacist terror groups in the US or Cointelpro have been white and have covered those stories to the exclusion of the Black experience integral to them. I don’t think DEI, as it has manifested within our culture, is a good thing whatsoever, since it seems to only have pissed white people off. This is quite frightening, since it tells us that our inclusion, history, culture, presence, and value within your communities is something that “breeds resent” in you. That said. it’s purpose was to combat systemic and interpersonal discrimination. So when you express that you hated it, I wish you would clarify why. As for “breeding resent” as Liz said. What exactly was there to be resentful of and towards? You said “it did nothing but breed resent”. Breed resent for whom? Because when a DEI department facilitates a cultural festival or a workshop on anti-Black racism, the hosts of those events are usually not experiencing resent. They’re experiencing eagerness to share and connect. The party who is bred with resent towards DEI action are always white people. So it seems that our inclusion is to your tremendous inconvenience.

Yes I work for a big corporation. There simply aren’t many people of color employed in the higher tiers of the business where they make a lot of money. Whether you want to call it DEI or not, corporations should be questioned about why all their executives are white men. There should be more women and minorities represented in the c-suite and department managers

Diversifying capitalism is used as a cover for MAINTAINING CAPITALISM while dragging people who think of themselves as Leftists along. I think it's a fair point that TA might need to expand its rather White bubble - and I also know that e.g. BJG has lamented how difficult it has sometimes been to recruit guests other than White men on Bad Faith, not because of her lack of trying, but because many of the potential guests of color and/or women turn her down more often (for understandable, often structural reasons) while the White men are almost always up for an interview. My point is not to refute the critique (Bad Faith does get many more guests of color, which suggests TA could do better), but to caution against reading intent or even (lack of) attempt into the results, because there is always a second agentic person in the mix when looking for guests. A lack of executives of color in a corporation is a *symptom* of a racist culture, but correcting that narrow metric does nothing to end racism (which is an invention of the same exploitative worldview as capitalism, created to justify exploitation as religious arguments were losing sway with declining central church authority) nor capitalism, it masks a symptom of an underlying problem. It's nice for the handful of Black and Asian-American and First Natiins and whatever other non-White executives, and that's it. So as a Leftist, putting even the slightest bit of energy into a materially negligible - and arguably counterproductive - effort instead of attacking a culture of racism directly or normalizing our economy so that C-suite executive is compensated the same as janitor (or less - maangement is real, useful work, and we need to have a broad reorienting of the social valuation of labor utility and compensation) and companies are democratically governend by all workers, so it doesn't matter who is doing the management work and who is doing the sweeping, or data entry, or fab line work, or deliveries, or whatever. I certainly don't want an antiracist capitalism any more than a racist capitalism - if anything, that makes it harder to turn people against it. DEI is a way to try to fix diversity in an institution, as you note; it's wholly irrelevant to people who want to tear the institutions in question down. Careerist, PMC people of color are not Leftists and are not my allies (unless thet betray their class and become comrades) - so, no, I'm not going to give a shit about them being locked out of Harvard's or Raytheon's board or whatever.
