"Every new invention is just a fart I have to smell for the rest of eternity" is incredible Brace

.

The UK comparison to what the U.S.’s future can look like is spot on and something I’ve been thinking about for weeks. Great guest.

Roman Baumeister

I’m German and I really don’t want a bigger country. I mean getting Danzig back would be nice. Also it was really a shame to loose Alsace, but apart from that there is not a single piece of land I’m yearning for.

Mirjam Dornauer

Lol, since the 50's, there are annual "Schlesien/ Silesia - Heimat ist Menschrecht/ Home is a human right" meetings. In the beginning there were hundreds of thousands in attendance. In 2019 6000 visitors. Last year's banner: "Silesia. Together. Future!"

brendo

"And now that I think about it, the Sudentenland really should be German. And Austria should join us. Oh and let's not forget East Prussia"

Mirjam Dornauer

Mulhouse is nice, too. Just don't go visit on Bastille day( check before you leave from Freiburg), because everything is closed. Except for the train station restaurant, where you could enjoy the worst Salade Niçoise ever! 😂

Until it was explicitly stated, I thought Harper’s bazaar and Harper’s magazine were the same thing. Oops

There are political operatives within the right that are revolutionary figures and have more than half the population voting for them and supporting them. You can look at this vanguard party as Reagan 2.0 to completely destroy any semblance of FDR’s new deal. Which links back to what I said about looking to the UK for America’s future. A restructuring of a unipolar empire, austerity, continued deranged culture and people lapping this shit up because there is no real material uplift offered. This might piss people off and it’s definitely not a 1:1 but there are some Leninist elements within the MAGA movement but from the right in the way they are operating right now. I think Brace or Liz said this on a previous show but I’m absolutely jealous of what they are doing right now. We just want this to be from the left to materially and culturally change peoples lives.

Your Mum

Brace - yes duh Europe is a sick dog getting abused? European institution is SICK and the golden age of beautiful American oligarchy is repeatedly ramming that black leather boot right into Europes distended puppy stomach

Your Mum

Also once again the long arc of our culture bends towards bum fight

I thought the voice at the beginning was a Peter Sellers imitation and absolutely flipped when I realized it was real

Thanks, it definitely was a recent episode when they expressed jealousy which I totally get. That Leninist bit intrigued me.

They got so into the idea of shitting on declining Europe that they seem to think that the US despite undermining its own influence across the world and staking their future on crypto and chatgpt is actually entering the new American Golden age. I don't know how else they can believe that Europe (whose market is actually slightly larger than the US) having a clear stimulus from Trump to actually start becoming independent is actually worse for Europe than for the US.

Que

Of course Europe and the West is in decline, the European colonial half millenia is over and they have nothing left to plunder and they have no way of acting in good faith to trade with most of their formal colonial subjects. The Chinese Century is beginning. Europe and the US should just accept the end of western domination and continue reforesting the lands and establishing marshland they've to mitigate the worst of what industrial capitalism has wrought. Btw Everyone subscribe to upstream on patreon.

ggmacd

Brace, if you want to know exactly what americans do in europe, watch Emily in Paris.

Johan Stefonski

I say this as your loyal and insane fan and supporter: you guys are doing a lot of whining lately, while articulating absolutely no positive arguments about anything at all. It's tiring. There are things that can be done, and people doing them. Maybe stop crying about the collapse of the liberal order, and start articulating a vision of how to fight the inevitable rise of the right. Or better yet, maybe you guys should go do something positive yourselves instead of whining for a paycheck to Lexapro-addled email workers. Just tired of whining. Always leftists whining, never winning. Not even trying.

jethiexoxo

Intro sounds like count orlok

I analyse Latin American politics for work and have to say it’s not all bad here! Sheinbaum/Morena continue to make progress in Mexico and remain immensely popular. The various parts of the opposition remain totally discredited, they’re a joke. There is a wide open election in Ecuador coming up which could see Luisa González, from RC (dem-soc) become president. Just wanted to provide some rays of light in an otherwise appropriately dark ep given the state of the world

Methew

Is young Chomsky gonna get his attitude right or am I gonna have to fix it for him??

CJ

Nick

Uncommon to hear “like” in an English accent to that extent

K H

Why is Amber Frost doing an English accent whole episode?

PT

Is Europe even capable of independence though? I’m a third worlder so I’m outside of this stuff but it’s always struck me as an assemblage of squabbling fiefdoms rather than a cohesive whole despite the EU’s pretensions. I do think Trump/Vance may have overplayed their hand by making it obvious rather than just subtextual to the European public that their status is that of a vassal state to the American Empire and nothing more. But is that enough?

Kevin

Yeah you know, I’ve had you know, like, many… you know like, uh, conversations with like people that like, you know, that like, you know, talk like this, like.. you know? It can be really like, uh, kinda like you know uh kinda like irritating you know? To like listen to when professional people you know like, talk like uh, you know, uh, like this

K H

Usually it goes: 1 protracted battle and a surprising but decisive defeat. 2nd campaign because surely that was a fluke, nope lose again even worse. Empire is over. Slowly rots. Unfortunately there is no reliable way to shoot down a modern missile. The only hope is Boeing engineering is common to all new advanced military weaponry, or that most development is spent on fighter jets and other bullshit that is mostly good for abusing poor people without their own anti aircraft program.

Johan Stefonski

It took me 10 seconds to write that paragraph.

Coastoid narcissism never ceases to amaze me

cowteeth

if you really think about it napoleon kinda was liberal hitler

.

No worries. and it’s not just FDR’s new deal. It’s also some of nixons liberal reforms. This is a highly ideological vanguard party and to do a cliche “late stage capitalism” both economic and cultural. We need something like this on the left if we want to survive. Bernie types ain’t cutting it. I think this is what Liz was getting at but she does a way better job messaging this to people.

Who else thought the Davos clip at the beginning was a joke at first?

MCL

If you really think about it Hailie Selassie I is God

nope

I think - in the abstract - yeah, in a genuinely multipolar world Europe could/would unite on a host of issues independent of US vassalage in a way that would fuck and paralyse the US metropole economically and geopolitically - it's a bigger market, it's well integrated, has a more diversified economy, well set up to work with China on post-fossil fuel economic order. Will it do it? No, absolutely not, are you insane, have you seen us or paid any attention to the last 1500 years of European history?

nope

The CDU ghoul about to run Germany did signal a pretty aggressive shift that I didn't see coming and you can never rule out Macron's impulse to spontaneous wile out - so maybe they suprise me and get something off the ground. But 99 times out of 100 I think it still ends up being run by Belgian guys who still jerk off remembering the time an American PE guy took them to a stipclub at SXSW 15 years ago and honestly, given ww2 etc, maybe that's for the best

nope

Totally independent of whatever point you are trying to make brother, I must soberly inform you that you are schizoposting

nope

You're 100pc right but on some level it's aesthetic or tonal - idk quite how to put it - but they share a total disrespect and reverence for the extant norms/institutions which feels relatable because I too would like to debase/demean/dethrone the United States....but wokely

nope

Yeah - I worry far less about what a rearmed Germany means for Europe than I do for the 2nd gen Turkish-german guys whose parents came over with the guest worker program

harpy

when are you going to continue il polpo? pls i need more

Brooke

We on the left in the birthplace of McCarthyism and the children of a generation that experienced an all-out assault on any leftist organizing and resistance to Capital are thoroughly miseducated. Where I am, all we can do is go underground and reeducate and ground people in theory while trying to preserve any semblance of a safety net long enough to at least give political education an opportunity to take root. The black community is in shambles. So that is where I am. I am not alone. 🖤

Thom Main

“Dude it’s a podcast” really is the only response we have here huh

TrueAnonPod

I want to tell this now: be careful what you wish for

Johan Stefonski

Yeah pretty much. Hope it was fun typing it into your little phone .

i found the ilaria alpi movie (the cruelest day). i'm going to upload it to youtube where people can watch it with english auto-subs. i will post the link in comments of the next il polpo episode if i may.

I love Brace’s rant at the end. So true, man.

I was like the death/funeral lady also covers Davos? Oh, that's Caitlyn Doughty

Sebastian Moller

You guys should do an episode about crypto AG, which was a Swiss technology company that sold tapped technology to trade information with West Germany and the US

Michał Smoleń

Can anybody indicate how Grayzone this episode is on the scale 1-10?

DoItForTheGramsci

Your solution to leftists winning is whining about it on a podcast patreon lol who really disillusioned and misdirected here? Be aware enough of your local orgs to participate in something and not bitch on a podcast that isn't going to vanguard for you and never said they would lol christ man

Matt Jolo

That paywall whining was such a good impression of me.

Anybody watch “Industry” on HBO? Most recent season (3) had a Davos-ey climate conference in Switzerland… if you have a kink for watching the 1% consume shit against gorgeous scenery, don’t miss 🥵

Gonna ask all the pretty ladies I meet, “things seem bad, no?”

Korey Samuel

Loved the guest and the pod - thanks! Only thing is I think Corbyn did have quite a imaginative and bold manifesto in 2019 (renationalisation, regional public funding outside of metropolitan hotspots, free internet, energy/transport caps, green energy etc) so I don’t know if I agree that we were pedalling a sob story on doorsteps

Johan Stefonski

I ask this genuinely: can you see the string of reply comments under my initial comment, or does this useless app not show you those?

Natalie

I assumed it was AI for too long

I would love to hear TrueAnon report from the WEF. Next year in Davos...

Optimism of the will, pessimism of the podcast ☯️

Friedrich Merz, the leader of Germany's newly elected centre-right party, has called for a detachment from the USA as one his first statements after his parties victory. He is an ex-Blackrock guy, so he will get along with Macron very well, who has the same ambitions. Merz even questioned the use of NATO at this point. Some things might actually happen.

DarylBarenziah

Y’all I really want you to have professor Eliot Jacobson on from climatecasino.net I think all of this in correlation with the environmental catastrophe going on is absolutely a want. The Marxist movements need to regain their revolutionary fervor and I believe that can come from the fire of climate change lit under our ass. The villification of the USSR and McCarthyism has led us to this moment in the left that y’all speak to in the last minutes of the episode. How can you build revolutionary passion without a history so destitute as one to forget philosophical powerhouses like the bolsheviks under Stalin, or the CPC under Mao. We have no history but the one the new left villified and that is why I believe there is atrophe and stagnation.

The Marvelous Meredith Marks

Liz can you plz cover the HouseInHabit. She’s currently spiraling over “the Epstein list” which she somehow believes Exists outside of what we already have and that it also doesn’t have Trump on it

For what it’s worth: “We are in a comfortable Dark Ages of the inventive mind; institutions change but little, and that by gradual evolution rather than revolution; scientific research creeps crablike in a lateral shuffle, where once it leaped in great intuitive bounds; devices change even less” From Dan Simmons’ “Hyperion”

Great ep. Hope she comes back on. Want to point out that the only growing economies in Eurozone are Italy Spain and Portugal and it’s all from tourism which everyone there hates. Pretty bleak

gocka

Class collaborationist nonsense

k

Can't speak to Italy and Portugal but growth of Spanish economy isn't solely attributed to tourism (6% in 2024) manufacturing grew 3,9%, forestry&fishing grew by 7%.
