HGH is also a Peptide; The big ones for strength sports are HGH and then peptides that mimic GH, like CJC1295 or Ipamorelin etc. God only knows where they come from but usually labs in china

Can we get lauren to come back at least once a month?

Emily Richardson

Seconding this!!! I also want to share this episode. What info the tech companies are monetizing is crazy and I don’t think people realize the depth of it. And the complicity/interconnectedness of the markets is a super important aspect people don’t often correlate.

Michael Ouderkirk

It's X if it's scams and bots and dumb tech shit. It's Twitter for everything else.

Well they kept the Christological controversies going for several more centuries, then the Westerners edited the Nicene Creed.

Data Dealer

Years ago, I demoed a game I made at a mobile games conference, hoping to secure some sort of publishing deal for mobile. What I got was the most disgusting lowball offers you can imagine, and a horde of people trying to “teach” me how to jam ads into every imaginable nook and cranny. Most of these folks were easily brushed off with a “sorry, we’re a premium game, we don’t run ads”, except for the AppLovin guy. His reply was “Why do you hate making money?”. I tried a couple more times to brush him off, but it seemed like he was not willing to leave until he had convinced me that ads don’t suck. I had to excuse myself to the bathroom to get rid of him.

It’s funny how Chipotle is never brought up when talking about “salad slopbowls” is it because it’s too lowbrow? It’s not as popular with tech/office job types as Cava or Sweetgreens?

Enkinanna

its just cause chipotle is old news, it was so far ahead of the game its not even in the conversation

Rory

SPEAK A LITTLE WASIAN FOR EM 🗣️🗣️

PT

I think it’s because Chipotle is filling and cava/sweetgreens are not. I checked out cava recently and the guy put like 3 of the saddest, smallest meatballs on a few spoonfuls of rice and called it a day. Genuinely felt ripped off lol

Ethan Schulz

Is that Nimblebits guy still making games?

My cousin who spends all his time online recently walked into traffic after saying he was being surveilled this shit happens right in your own backyard shit is bleak

Some of the trade “lynchpins” you spoke of were literally bought out with lump sums in the mid-19th century. The Danish Sound dues and the Dutch Scheldt dues ended when British, French, and Russian backers paid Denmark and the Netherlands huge sums in compensation. Ironically, much of the money was used to pay back debts. An early part of knitting world capitalism together.

Brace, Liz, can you please get Cities By Diana on the pod? Please?

Ok so if this Strauss thing is real it explains so much like the structure of the Jersey Mikes Cinematic Universe, the hidden messages in the Jimmy John’s menu (what happened in that Italian Nightclub) and where the Quiznos rodents came from

Mark Murphy

I'm enjoying the episode and don't wanna appear unnecessarily aggressive: All this Strauss stuff is just shibboleths? Fashion - demarcating those in the Know and those outside?

The discussion of Novo Nordisk and Maersk made me thing of ASML and how a Dutch company basically exists alone in holding the keys to advanced lithography for CPUs. I'm surprised the admin hasn't made a push to acquire a copy (so to speak) of that technology through some kind of economic force.

CummyPuss

as someone in insurance on the agent side, AI is has already started to change the game in policy reading drastically. it will probably never get to a point where you have an AI agent, but insurance companies will start to use it for their operations having just Underwriters. Agents will be able to have a lot larger books and need a lot less help from outside staff. there will be a lot of fluff removed from agencies and the carriers both.

Nite Life Jesse

Is this person taking whatever made Matt Christman have a stroke

I assume because it doesn’t have the cash flow since everyone has recognized it doesn’t have the user base to justify advertising spending

Everett

I have never understood an episode less than this

casey

i think this episode made me schizophrenic

King Krang

Yeah, that seemed to be the implication, but they were saying there are certain signs you see in failing enterprises... But didn't list them. Brace got everyone off track and I'm going to send him prolific hate mail about it.

ggmacd

maybe finance is just a name for the evil men do

Anne

Ozempic is not that expensive actually. In most European and Asian countries a pen that either has 8 or 4 doses (depending on how much you use and it’s 1 dose a week) is around 120 euros. The thing is Europe is that your health insurance won’t pay for it unless you have diabetes type 2. It’s supposed to be on subscription only but there are ways around that and not every pharmacy is that strict

🤷🏼‍♀️

I really don't know about this Straussian thing, seems silly

Nick

Bad news for Lauren that Matt Yglesias has the exact same little “mhm” tic. (I like Matt though :-/)

openAI is at best a masterclass in PR. the message was clear enough that sam altman & ilk were able to swindle investors and civilians into believing in something that is inaccurate, wastes resources, causes psychosis, erodes critical thinking, & somehow makes john fetterman more grotesque. great work every1

ggmacd

I liked the episode, and I read the substack piece. I appreciated learning about Talmudic reasoning and I guess it's an interesting framing of ChatGPT for poetic (straussian?) reasons. ...But you don't have to dig very deep into the philosophy of logic to know that this kind of reasoning isn't by necessity rooted in the Talmud or exclusive to it. Pretty much any real world (read: not in a closed system) use of logic is associative, which is to say it makes an interpretive inference to the best explanation. This is hard to do, requires lots of training (this is how any kind of expert diagnosis works) so it is unsurprising that ordinary people have, on average, shit judgment in this regard. The fact that Americans aren't familiar with the reading of the Talmud is not a convincing reason why AI is driving them insane. Maybe that's the Straussian wink and nudge and an innuendo going over my head, or maybe that's just the plot of the movie Pi, I don't know. I think there are simpler explanations as to why AI drives people insane, like the fact that americans are lonely and their AI companions have no real capacity for ethics because they have no body and therefore no real stakes in the world. The AI Butthole logo thing got me though. I was forcibly converted to Lauren's side by that point. Everyone should read the article for that, at the very least.

ggmacd

If you've ever encountered a straussian in the wild, they're like a subspecies split off from the more commonly occurring Guy Who Speaks Exclusively in Family Guy References, and whose voice is now just stuck on "doing a bit" mode, so you can never tell (or care) if they're doing a bit. You just nod in deference to the twinkle in their eye and move on.

On the PS5, there's a bunch of scam games as well. They take popular indie titles, usually PC games, and slap a name thats very similar to the original game. Then they sell in on the PS store and apparently they are complete garbage, broken games that barely work.

Brian

I remember a couple weeks ago the CEO of Quest "nutrition", who's food is filled with erythritol that is terrible for your heart, made a post on his YouTube channel bragging about how AI helped make his company more efficient. He listed a few things it did, one of them was that it cut 50% of his labor costs. So AI literally laid off half of his company and he was bragging about it openly. The guy is a psychopath

Brian

Well obviously, I was just pointing out a recent example of what they were mentioning when they talked about AI consulting.....

Jon Lyons

It's funny you should bring up AI in the context of Talmudic experience, especially once you just let the AIs talk to each other; I think this is an important glimpse under the hood to help understand why they're so primed to gas susceptible people up into spiritual mania (but then that's exactly what one would expect of something made from squeezing virtually all human writing into a digital sausage grinder): https://www.infinitebackrooms.com/dreams/conversation-1710904056-txt-629d6

This was good for me to listen to because now I know how annoying I sound when I bring up "rhizomatic" in conversation

bobore

Idk they sure talked a lot and didn't say that much. "I've built these things myself!" "Like what?" "Uh, well, you know... There's a lot. Uh, it's kind of like Got Milk? It's Straussian."

Fun Ep, but this guest really lost me in the back half with the schizo religious stuff - like obviously organized religion propagates itself via memes and shit, but like come on bro you gotta analyze the Kool Aid, not DRINK it. Marxism and structural materialism explain all this stuff without needing to dive into “Jewish sand stories and Christian trees influenced Ezra Klein to mind virus you with Abundance!” The guest got a little too “woo woo” for me personally

1:31:40 A good word to describe what it is, is a shibboleth. Basically a thing you use to signal you're in an in group that outsides might not notice. Comes from a biblical story where two tribes would pronounce "shibboleth" differently, but only in a way that one of the two tribes could notice and use to identify and kill the other side.

As someone who was a senior software engineer specializing in mobile apps (that used to work at Apple) I unfortunately am in the 1% of listeners very familiar with AppLovin. Also one note, the “Ask App Not to Track” pop up is the change Apple made that was a shock to ad tech

Very eyebrow raising. A lot of people who gaze into the schizo abyss start sounding like schizoids themselves. Also they didn’t seem to know what they were talking about beyond a “skimmed Wikipedia” level.

As a property casualty business analyst, insurance against AI would have to be considered relative to the value of the business. It won't just be one thing, it will have to be actuaries counting a thousand different things, or basing it on current cyber security coverage standards until events start occurring and the legal precedent begins to form and determines how the 'worth,' is settled, the interplay of various coverages across multiple policies, and acting as an umbrella. Just writing that now, my expectation would be it is lumped in with umbrella coverages which is a policy that has an extremely low utilization probability to cover losses beyond other business coverage limitations. So, say a trucking company oofs a pedestrian. The court awards the estate $3 million, but the coverage limit for liability on their auto policy is $2 million. The auto coverage will pay first to exhaustion, then the umbrella policy will come in behind that and pay the remaining million. The three important things on umbrella policies are, 1) they pay last, no matter the line of coverage thats paying first; auto, property, liability, work comp, whatever. 2) the cost per X dollars of coverage is significantly lower in exchange for the lower probability of the policy being utilized, and 3) ...damn, they do be making the weed too good now. I had 3. Maybe #1 started as 2 separate things. Anyways. I could see where once legal cases start playing out, the cost is the settlements will start to develop enough so that it can be projected, but the other thing with the legal cases is that they will assert the categories of liability. Then the insurance policies will be obligated to create rules on it to at least exclude coverage for those matters. Then umbrellas will also be forced to adapt pricing to the new risk landscape. They all make contingencies, but what's important here is getting things established, then the markets will respond with progressively better fidelity.

Alexander

I understand a lot of these ideas in the episode because of my religious background and education, but Lauren is only reasonable like you said if you don't drink the Kool Aid I fall somewhere in between on the scale of Religion is Pure/Real and Da Vinči Code Straussian memetics bullshit Idk it is irresponsible to give crazy people a voice but isn't that what this podcast is all about? Think for yourself.

Jobs for everyone (especially rich do-nothings) so everyone’s job will be easier and we can get rid of money because everyone won’t mind doing their easy job if it means the jobs that need done for them will be done in return.

Miles_B

I studied philosophy for my undergrad (at UT Arlington in DFW actually). We talked about Strauss and the "Leocons" one day. Strauss's interpretations are very heterodox. In Plato's Republic, for example, there's a character named Thrasymachus (IIRC) who introduces the position of "might makes right" early on in a discussion about the nature of justice, and then leaves the conversation. For Strauss, this one line is what the book is really about. The strong take whatever they like while everyone else argues with each other. Following the rules, being charitable, being kind, being truthful - these things are of no concern to people with true power. And that is precisely the Republican mindset. The question for me is, what do we do with a world that is ruled by people like this??? Great episode.

Kevin

I don’t mind having a crazy guest on to babble about how they “totally have actually created straussian memetic networks - trust me bro! Anyways Google is arboreal and the AI “thinks” in Jewish” - It’s all good fun. I just personally believe that Religion is an opiate for the masses, it’s used as a tool for control by the bourgeois, it will fade away if our material needs are met in some future stage of socialism etc. and ALL religious bullshit is just an ongoing consequence of the brutal and contradictory moment we exist within during this period of capitalism. But I’m just some guy. And I’m gay

Specially when it comes to the economic episodes, the crew often assume their listeners already understand business economics and capitalism from a Marxist perspective. It's a pet peeve of mine that they aren't clearer about how they arrive to conclusions, but the more you listen the more it'll make sense. There's no gatekeeping here.

Waleed

Omg people need to just shut the fuck up about the DeAd InTeRnEt ThEoRy so sick of this term

Alexander

Yes, it is a cult on a larger scale. Social control through shaping peoples beliefs, establishing in groups and out groups, harsh penalties for leaving. Using Strauss as a label just obfuscates the truth

Charles Frum

Damn Liz’s globalization rant at 1:01:07 is 💨💨💨🔥🔥🔥🌏🌏🌏

Isaac

X the Everything App is pushing low-brow paranoid content hard on the For You tab.

King Krang

Right, I just wanted the specific signs. I was hoping there were some internal struggles or ad revenue numbers I hadn't heard about yet.

Axel H.

This episode was an absolute trip, but I'm here for it. I don't have to be completely on board with every theory Lauren was expressing (didn't sound like Brace and Liz were exactly convinced either), but I just like hearing some new ideas that are quite unfamiliar to me. And this actually somehow felt easier to follow that the Utah series or Zort.

Joseph Mabrey

My wife's non-profit is replacing social workers with AI people who you can pick what they look like and meet with them via videoconference.

Seth

I think about half of what Lauren said was built on a misunderstanding of strauss’s reductium ad hitlerum fallacy

Kmead

I struggle with this episode because Lauren seems to treat these things as purposeful when they are only emergent. Memetics don’t occur on purpose, it never works this way. When they were talking about how Trump was naturally memetic while Vance forces it, I think this elucidates why this episode is merely schizo posting. Sure you can analyze the communications through Strauss, but it feels shoe horned. You can arrive at all the same conclusions through any other, more objective imo, lenses.

Kmead

However, Lauren was charismatic & was an enjoyable episode to listen to.

Mood Slut

Totally! This is info I’d like to dump on every single person. Especially Straussianism, and the nuggets about how ai chat query-tunneling works, the Talmudic comparison is so accurate. Those who can’t really tell how and why ChatGPT answers/engages are impressed by it, think it’s benign; or worse, grow to rely on it for interactions and real life relational support that should absolutely not involve a third party if it’s not a human therapist. The stories about people using ChatGPT to diagnose or emotionally abuse their partners when they get in the hole with it are pretty unnerving.

SLAVOJ ZIZEK *dumpy man pictured walking in front of a burning car* THE YEAR OF CHATTING JEWISHLY

hog

im with brace’s initial reaction on that last bit, what the fuck are you talking about?

Justin Stanley

I don’t know anything about Strauss but I got the distinct impression this person doesn’t either, IDK. Whole thing reeked of “programmer way out over their skis”.

O.K. Mann

Yeah I feel bad that she felt like apologizing for it (briefly/reflexively), cause I want to encourage as many Liz macro-econ rants as possible.

Riaz Abdulla

You both need to get an incite and download Sora. It’s so scary

Bryan LeSueur

app and hood already got added. how do these ppl not know this?

Percy Plump

The woo woo straussian memetics back third kinda soured me on how grounded her prognostications in the first half can be. And then you look her up and she is a Christian Socialist financial analyst? Okay…

Percy Plump

And having to use 3-dollar-words like arborescent and rhyzomatic to convey the same meaning as horizontal and vertical, come on… i think she overdosed on college

Percy Plump

How’d you fare this time

Will Hinchman

did i have an ai induced hallucination or was the last 20 minutes really veer off into "the jews created chatGPT for population control"?

Brock Sliter

unsure, second listen i get more of the way lauren thinks and communicates/ the effects of schizo twitter brain in real time. it’s nonsense but there is an internal logic.

ND Perseo

The frustrating thing about schizoposters like Lauren is that they condescendingly treat their observations as self-evident. "Of course LLMs are Talmudic, it's right in front of you". You could tell even brace and Liz were getting annoyed near the end

Laura

everytime brave says nietzsche all i here is steve carrel in little miss sunshine

Samantha Geovjian Clarke

most fascinating guest since Michael Judge. what a ride. i really don't know what to think about all that but boy was it fun

EA Burdett

I'm a software dev and I'm looking for work. I've had at least 6 interview phone calls with literal just AI agents in the past two 3 weeks. Crazy. One was for a company that makes some AI models for video training to get rid of HR/Training people and I swear to god one of the 'people' in the interview were an AI bot that appeared as a person in the zoom call. Weird as hell- told me i could expect an offer, then nothing. Now i'm convinced they were all AI just gathering data. I think also there are a ton of job listings in every position that are interviewing people just for data gathering. Can't wait for that bubble to pop.

Sean Carton

Cava was great when it first opened. It turned crap in 2021 or so.

Sean Carton

Omg I’m with you brother/sister. At least you’re getting interviews even if fake

JDF

JDF

Not a fresh scoop but I think (as a cocained caterer who was present) a suitable tale of gentility and genitalia : Marge Mitchell X Real Housewives + Loeffler Labia

Shadowil

Yeah that rocked

eduard karpoev

Saying you understand the esoterism of a certain thing because you did it, but then not understanding (or at the very least not having the ability to example) a very basic concept of Christianity in the Nicean Creed which you are comparing it to, & then having to use more academic soup language to justify your opinions when they didn't need that earlier in topics they really understood makes me question if they really knew what they were talking about in the last 30 mins of the episodes or if they were just rambling hoping what they said made sense/was right. Also looking like you don't understand the Nicean Creed but then talking about the Talmud & making it such a hinge for your argument when its a much bigger then just a few paragraph statement also is weird. Like explain yourself more, because you are sounding crazy

Antipaganda

Please get this person back as many times as they are willing to come back. This is the TrueAnon experience at its highest. You guys are amazing.

Sean Carton

Ooohhhkay this guest needs to rein it in, learn more history, and stop condescending.

Brian Long

“…I’m Liz.” Lol, always so grounded after whatever Brace says.

Brian Long

Actually, AI Insurance is a really good idea.

Brian Long

Brace’s Klarna Car warning lol.

Morgan

I have a coworker whos sister is losing her mind right now because shes using chatgpt as a therapist after her bf kilt himself. Shell ask chatgpt if hes in heaven and shit like that

Kmead

I’m not sure if you read what I wrote.

Dry wall Eater

Cloud is actually profitable unlike AI and most tech idiocy. AWS is the only reason Amazon makes any profit. And it does make sense, it’s better than hosting your own servers.

Pink&TealCore

The moment the guest went off equities analysis the conversation started to be incredibly stupid tbh. They should probably take less of whatever they are taking. And if they come back they should probably limit themselves to equities analysis.

Pink&TealCore

No you are not, the guest is just a classic data analyst/program that's a schizo, retarded, pseudo-intellectual when they start talking about things that are not their expertise. It's absolute drivel what they are saying. Strauss himself is a very obscure figure, saying nothing of importance unless you are a philosophy student or a retarded schizo like this guest. Honestly if you noticed brace's reaction towards the end, or many of the comments, I think many people share these thoughts. Don't fall for the guest's grift; they just want to sound intellectual

Pink&TealCore

Well the thing is the guest is talking absolute nonsense, with a Wikipedia lvl knowledge of anything that isn't their bread and butter, while trying to use slopacademic words to sound pseudo-intellectual. I am not sure there is a better example of internet induced schizophrenia and retardation

Pink&TealCore

For good reason too. Christian Socialist huh... A bit on the nose.

Barry

Hey - it's about the comments you *don't* post

Homalek

I think the point at 1:08:00 mark rings so true - collectively you see everyone fail these tests every time something big happens. It's like, nope sorry, you got silly dumb and posted a bunch of knee jerk things based on completely unreliable sources and even in some cases non real imagery. Just in general tired of joe blow opening a post with "BREAKING", like brother you are not a journalist, we never deserved the privilege of an app like this because we can't help but roleplay being political correspondents. sigh

Once_Royal

I think this is an interesting point, but I personally feel there is likely a middle ground. I don't think the people engaging in Straussian behavior are starting off the day, cracking open Natural Right and History, and saying "Time to do some Strauss!" but rather engaging in behavior that is easily categorized by Staussian ethos. At a certain point, it's calling a spade a spade, regardless of the spade's intentions or self-awareness.

b bordeaux

was at least kind of following along until that point but yeah this totally lost me, rly weird and ahistorical understanding of technology that borders on LaRoucheism. like, there’s a clear link between the practice of questioning everything and the development of science/tech from the european enlightenment on that i think explains the tech better than a secret battle between catholicism and judaism

jjolly

Taking less of whatever they are taking OR more of whatever they should be

Just Watch Adam Curtis’ The Power of Nightmares

John Swan

The Gell-Mann amnesia is strong with this pod

John Swan

Liz and guest not sounding ridiculous talking about a subject they have zero expertise in challenge: impossible.

John Swan

Just subscribe to Matt Levine’s Money Stuff newsletter. It’s where she gets like 90% of the takes and it’s free

emma

Also being dead serious I started replying “KILL YOURSELF” to every indeed job text I get and they stopped coming in I would recommend everyone do it

John Swan

When someone begins to talk like they’re an expert in everything, you should maybe be skeptical about them having expertise in anything.

Julie D

This guest was a total crackpot but I'm here for it

Calla Martyn

I am like pulling my hair out listening to the peptide part lol. I'm a biologist. Peptides are short strings of amino acids. Amino acids are string together into proteins with a 3d structure. But if you only have a few of them I'm a string it's more like a short string of beads. Sometimes they are expressed this way by your body and sometimes you get them by chopping up a full length protein. They can be used for therapeutics (not limited to weight loss or any one disease state) but also exist in your body right now.

Sean

Strauss is absolutely not an obscure figure, but the rest of your comment is correct. He was very influential among mid-century conservative intellectuals who architected the republican strategy that brought the USA to this moment

Qnoll

AI Insurance is already available for hallucinations and IP infringement etc, the Vouch Insurance website has a description of the coverage types if you are interested.

Kmead

I just don’t think looking at this through a non materialist lens is helpful in this case. To think these people are purposefully doing evil is antagonistic to materialist thinking.

Olivia D

@Pug_luvr + @Breakaway omg u both rule ty ty ty !

Olivia D

Does “ask app not to track” really make a difference re: privacy concerns + such?

Zach Wallace

The second hour of this podcast was unintelligible

Pug_luvr

The *Straussians created chatGPT for population control. Important distinction. Lauren shared some out-there ideas, but I don't think you can fairly reduce them to anti-semitism. Brace and Liz wouldn't have had an antisemite on the show, and Liz wouldn't have called her "my favorite guest". I found it helpful to read this article for a primer on Strauss and why he matters: https://jacobin.com/2024/10/leo-strauss-neoconservatism-plato-elitism That was helpful background to have as I read over Lauren's substack, where she elaborats on the stuff she presented here. Interesting reading!

Marcus

The straussian way of speaking with all its evasiveness, double meanings, and prevarication is very popular with the meth heads where I live.

bob

I don’t understand how Strauss is a better way of understanding these events than DeBord or Baudrillard. I’d argue that both of those guys had a much greater grasp on propaganda than this.

CJ

I think maybe the recreational Adderall kicked in way too hard by that point

CJ

I think I never want to hear the word 'Straussian' ever again. I've now reached my limit for one lifetime.

CJ

This comment is actually very Straussian 😏

John Swan

I’ll add the guest isn’t held in high regard in her domain. An all around quack.

Broadcasts From Poor Farm

Genuinely weirded out bc they’ve been opening new branches throughout Houston just in the past year or two, and it’s a very co-worker style “hey let’s go to Cava” … “omg I love Cava” kind of thing. To hear that it’s on its way out makes me feel like the city is in some kind of dated twilight zone.

Broadcasts From Poor Farm

So what I took away from that section is apparently only rabbi’s should be allowed to use Open AI?

Lulu

I like Cava ngl.

jer

I like this guest. Either hes really smart and im dumb or im dumb and hes also dumb.

Kompromatic

I get their kids meal for lunch frequently it’s plenty of food and only like $8

jer

Yeah when I hear them talk about medicine etc and bungle it, it sometimes makes me wonder about other stuff they may not have the best grasp on. Idk perhaps im being straussian

Joelio

Fuck!

JP

Would be cool if y’all did an episode with the authors of the book “Exocapitalism: Economies with absolutely no limits”

Yadav

that's straussian, actually

Nathan

And is this “Strauss” in the room with us right now?

Martin Kasey

A random form of growth, like ginger. The post-structuralist philosopher Deleuze made this into a philosophical concept that's popular in critical theory and influential in contemporary art and architecture

Martin Kasey

Is this a rhizomatic podcast now?

Jordan

Me thinks I detect some Straussian influence upon your sentence

Quinn

Going to steal this strat. Thank you!

Chelsea

I would love for you guys to talk to Dan Davies. His book "Lying for Money" is a great taxonomy of financial and market crimes. I would love to hear you guys talk to him about the different types of fraud being perpetuated. He also probably will not go off about "talmudic AI"

Chelsea

Man-Gell Amnesia....

AbsenteeUncle

CAVA hate reserved for the podcast elite whose entire day is a lunch break.

sam_w_s

Ridiculous to say that LLMs are "based" on the Talmud. Maybe the experience is similar to reading the Talmud, but that's a coincidence. No one is learning about the Talmud at a reform Jewish Hebrew school

Paul Qmitz

On Tucker i learned AI comes directly out of the Kabbalah, now i hear here it is actually talmudic, what is it? 🤔

mario why

yeah i’m fucked up on lynchpoints

Nicholas Storch

Among 1000x fake anti-semitism accusations, here is one that I share concerns about. Saying "Strauss the Orthodox Jew is behind all current elitist machinations", as if elitism and its claims have not been a factor in all politics forever.

tubularballs

they dont do stuff like that anymore. they arent joking about being liberal conservatives

Aṭā

What a genuinely dogshit episode

Lojban Chauvinist

Back half of the ep is like something out of Eddington

Jon Lyons

Session logs of 2 AIs playing an improv game together, kind of a computerized, two-player version of "Smartest Man In The World" crossed with a text adventure: one AI pretends to be a command line interface (like DOS or Linux) that theoretically can run any command whatsoever (so of course it immediately goes into esoteric Dorm Room territory), and the other makes up bullshit computer commands that the first one then pretends are real commands that actually do anything. All the computer code looking nonsense and spooky filenames like "pandora.sealed" are pretend, like it's just English done up to look all hacker-y.

KR666

call me arboritic the way i’ll make like a tree and leave if I’m ever in the same room as this guest

Katana King

What an all timer, goddamn

Katana King

People are being pretty hard on this episode but I think it brings together a lot of Chapo extended universe stuff (Infinite Cast, Metal Gear) to create a cohesive theory of an insanity rune. Never before have we had a theory regarding the actual inner workings of a real, documented insanity rune before.

otso aunola

If start going around and calling chat GPT "the jewish machine" will the podcast be responsible for my reputational damage.

JV

"Catholicism was like an authoritarian tree but Judaism was like a bottom-up rhizhome" lmao okay sure buddy. Just completely detached from any reality. Go read something like Israel Shahak for instance detailing how the history of Judaism in Europe is of these incredibly authoritarian closed-communities where the Rabbi has absolute power of life and death over everyone. yes very rhizomatic. insufferable

the crazy guy

To the degree that I could follow it, I really don't see what is so objectionable about the stuff in the second half.

Kristian Munnikhuis

Annoying guest who was way too high on their own supply. Everything they said could be coherently summarized in a few paragraphs, yet half the audience is left scratching their head because of how intentionally obtuse this person is. Bet they read comments of confusion with a smug “those poor masses” look

jon montenegro

This was a fun one. Made me think of Hideo Kijoma and how MGS 2 and 4 revolve around how memes and technology are used to control the population. You guys should talk to him.

Bloom

This is possibly one of the worst/best episodes, my dude got stuck in his own mental DVD screen saver. That said, I kinda vibe with it.

Dear Death

Strauss' interpretation of Plato's Republic in 'City and Man' and the lectures from the 60s are incredible—there's a suggestion he makes to the effect of "the use of the political is a way of enabling people to participate in their own delusion." I'm still sitting with that.

Mathamphetamine

I know a guy IRL who talks about ai and Talmud and kabala and shit endlessly and I dont think he was influenced by this guest at all, which worries me that there may be lots of people thinking and talking this and I really cannot get behind this. I just want to pour Coke on the nearest circuit board when I hear about AI and Talmud. Gotta shut the whole thing down until we can figure what the hell is going on.

Meredith Lovelace

I enjoyed this episode, mostly because I play Stardew Valley or work while listening and therefore can tune out happily when I stop following along. It explained what the hell was going on with Greenland for me which I actually needed because one of my best friends thinks that there's unexplained ufo/drone activity in Denmark. But yeah when we hit the world "Talmud" I laughed and was like, alright, I'm gonna go harvest my parsnips.

OG Cracker Barrel

Some of the best pancakes I ever had as a 12 yr old and I remember the taste like it was yesterday.

Rooti Tooti Giuliani

Regarding the AI Insurance products question: I am certain that at some point an AI specific insurance product will coalesce in the markets however as of right now liability losses stemming from AI would likely be covered under errors and omissions coverage.

Brett Rosenfeld

Guest was such a know it all…. Liz brace and YC good as always

David Walker

How are these episodes so timely? APP Lovin getting investigated by the SEC just announced lol

Ty

Lmao APP down 100 today on SEC data collection probe. How do you do it?

Hollis Potts

Perhaps you’re being Straussian? Of course you’re being Straussian. Am I being Straussian? That’s a very Straussian thing for you to wonder.

Hollis Potts

Perhaps you’re being Straussian? Of course you’re being Straussian. Am I being Straussian? That’s a very Straussian thing for you to wonder.

L

1700th anniversary of the council of nicea this year… how are we celebrating

MinervasEye

Good episode, the guests insistence on Strauss as a framework was certainly...interesting. I don't think that the claim that "AI is based off the Talmud" is separate from that Strauss-based framework. Good episode, please read Lukacs my besties

Liberal Hitler, you guessed it... Straussian! classico ep, great guest

Charlotte Ring

I unfortunately love mobile games, and play several games using the Unity ad service they mention. The games have a specific platform where you can complete tasks for a little in-game currency. Many times it will take me to a slop ai blog and make me click links for bathroom remodels, or just make you scroll through a hundred ads in a quiz. The podcast ones are the funniest because sometimes they make you take a quiz to prove you listened to the episode. People used to put the answers in th Spotify comments so they had to turn them off. But they always ask for feedback on the podcast and I’ve developed an alter ego named Belinda who always requests more Jesus and only listens to bible podcasts.

Nate Wood

Data Wrangler. Investor. Christian socialist. Human capital, infrastructure, SaaS.

Zak K

That was a real tough listen. At one point I think the guest says something like "your listeners may think I'm crazy but" yes, this whole episode about Chatgpt being a talmudic experience, etc, is exactly what a crackhead on the corner would be shouting while shadowboxing.

Jlev

Wait, @liz why shouldn’t I do Groupon Botox? Help me I can’t afford to be poor AND an ugly hag!

Blahblahblah

Definitely was reminding me of interpretations of Eddington. One thing I was thinking of in particular is how Ari Aster made a bunch of Twitter profiles for each of his characters in Eddington and tailored their algorithms to their specific conspiracy theories and tried to "break out" of the algorithms/deschizofy and couldn't. I think something to be said for how crazy everyone is driven by exposure to internet and how the loop repeats itself.

Sian

........ Yeah lost me with this one. There was so many crazy sweeping generalisation and under explained thoughts.

N Clementine

So what’s the right way to wipe my data from the web-o-sphere? Cloaked? Then they have my data?

Natalie L

Really insane amount of misgendering in the comments on this one!

Lojban Chauvinist

That's cool to know. Was clear that Aster was "tuned in"

Jingling

Guest already has already gone AI schizophrenic

Brian McQuaid

I think this person has interesting things to say. I don’t think she presented her ideas very coherently and the second hour is kinda a mess to listen too even if it was a fun conversation to have

G

Honestly looking at the scriptural narratives in Andreesen and Abundance is a cool idea even if the conclusions were kind of off. There’s an interesting mid-2010s Semiotext(e) humanities political theology grad school project in there somewhere… keep workshopping it…

Soon to be ex-Houstonian here to say: it really, really is.

Sandra L.

An arborescent structure is directional - it has an (implied) point of origin and all of its branches inevitably become increasingly distant from that point - whereas a rhizomatic one can have no point of origin, loop back on 'earlier'/'parallel' points, etc. I agree that it wasn't particularly well deployed in the ep; after the Catholic Church was offered as an arborescent structure I was waiting for her to follow up with a rhizomatic counterexample but it never came

Nina SehGULL

Lauren is so cool I'm obsessed

Connor

Need more classico eps like this talking about weirder stuff

John Cameron

Liked a lot of this, find a lot of it interesting, just let all the stuff at the end about Straussian thought and memetics wash over me the minute the guest called Ezra Klein "the left" for like the sixth time

No one's into the Strauss talk, and I do think she was kinda pushing lines of thoughts towards tenuousness, but I think it's //fascinating// to think about how that could be utilized in contemporary political messaging and tracks with what I've seen, especially from the far-right. she's super cool, excited to read more from her

Austin Williams

Came back to this one because the guest is really not my cup of tea: "I've designed some of these systems I know how they work". Fine overall. Adam Curtis levels of trying to get way too much juice out of one orange.

Austin Williams

"What people don't understand is that Big Milk is political". Yes. Yes.

Austin Williams

Looking forward to learning enough hanzi to know what this joker is up to.

Paul Brewer

I don’t get the Cava hate. It’s a decent, cheaper alternative to champagne 🍾

Court La Forest

Really enjoyed listening to this conversation. Lauren is a fantastic guest, please have her on again!! The Straussian history and distillation was so interesting

I would choose a 30ft tall asian version of Sarah Jessica Parker who also has a dog’s tail and she tells me to clean my room

I get that I should be grown-up enough to get over this and myself whenever non-left pundits do this but christ it’s just so irritating. on the other hand she’s picking up trash in her free time and I’m just an asshole on the internet so overall, probably a praxis W for her

Claire Lewis

Check out Adam Curtis’ power of nightmares for how the Straussians engineered the US’s involvement in the Middle East over the last 50 years

Real winner of an episode here! Just wanted to share that I enjoyed it.

Not bringing your best guests with this one

This guest has the same idea of what the left is as my uncle. Joe Biden and Matt Yglesias are apparently leftists. Very odd for this show

Really liked this episode Hope you have her back

I appreciated the analysis of the straussians. Made me rewatch Adam Curtis’s The Power of Nightmares

Thank god someone else felt this way. I assumed I was too stupid to understand what the hell was happening in the second half of this episode and must have misjudged that. You can’t just toss out “ChatGPT is Talmudic” without putting in significant effort to explain yourself.

Damn this guest probably loves Deleuze. Second half got me totally schizo stoned NGL… I was confused, excited and definitely wanting more after. Think we need a full Straussian unpacking ep.

I remember deep diving where the advertisers were registered when I started getting the ridiculous 'Are you a Genius type ADHD?' quiz ads. A lot were in Cyprus and headquarters in Limassol. There's also an - ostensibly Ukranian - media company there that churns out slop kids YouTube content that naturally gets tens of millions of views. Real race to the bottom in Limassol.

Can anyone recommend where to start w Leo strauss - and any good secondary texts?
