The part around 1:10 ish about the poor quality of reports / tips about ICE movements and whereabouts sadly reminds me of being on the overnight watch and security signal channel at our Pro-Palestine encampment. All the same issues applied (uselessly vague tips, hyper vigilant reports of regular people walking nearby, bad sense of direction and descriptions of people), but the fucking RUMORS were the worst. "I heard they're going to break up the encampment tonight." Fucking, heard from who? When? And then the one night in which our local ultra Zionist counter protestors threw a giant metal post into a thankfully empty tent (verified only by reviewing a recording of the school's own Quad Livestream) no one saw anything useful. Eventually only folks who received some level slightly more rigorous training / explaining were allowed to post in that chat effectively filtering out the nonsense. But still. People kind of suck at helping in a good or useful way. God bless em but some of them just don't have enough common sense to no hurt more than help.

I assumed it was because the video quality (both resolution, and the actual camera work) was much higher than most of the videos we get out of these incidents and that he was really in the center of all of it and clearly visible. Great insights on the organizational structure of this movement from Brace. In my own Minneapolis suburb, there are real concerns from admins not only about role and responsibility delegation, but burn out for people who are "in charge". I can't speak entirely to the actions of people in Minneapolis, but I think there are efforts being made to create a more structured organizational hierarchy. I do wonder how willing people will be to accept that if implemented

It stands for Size, Activity, Location and Time. It's an acronym meant to help people give more useful reports. Salute adds "unit" and "equipment." It's an old military thing. It's useful if you can get people to remember to mention all those things when they're making a report, but not easy to get people to remember to do that in the heat of the moment.

Commenting based on my experience in medical emergencies, Brace's observations / comparing to combat experience is pretty spot on. The military is hierarchical and controlled for many reasons, but mainly because poor communication costs lives. And the same applies in medical emergencies. Not saying this is exactly what needs to happen, but some kind of command / control approach counters the fact that everyone is in a state of temporary cognitive impairment. Focus narrows, people cant always see what's supercritical or irrelevant, or they miss things that would ordinarily be obvious. You need a clear communication pathway to a leader who receives reports, can see what's happening from multiple angles, try to determine what makes sense what is probably bullshit, then give orders and make sure they are followed. Its a lot of training, and a real skill to communicate just the relevant info clearly and know it's been received. So, and I mean this with no judgement on the activists, I really do support what most people seem to be doing, looking after their community and also protecting themselves. But yeah, Brace is spot on identifying the limitations of a decentralised structure.

Another thought - if the same thing was happening where I live, and in the absence of formal training, I would be recruiting / hanging out with people who play a lot of team sports, like baseball for example. Sorry if this is a trivial comment, and i hope not to come across as nitpicky. But I really do not see centralized/de-centralized as a "trade-off," as if it is a decision being made by people, rather than a class-historical process (at least insofar as we are talking about large scale mass movements themselves). Moments where large numbers of people are drawn into the street recur periodically. Whether this mass activity itself takes on a centralized or decentralized character has nothing to do with which one people are more sympathetic to, in the way that a small activist group of a few dozen people may be. On a mass scale, it is exactly the opposite: people's sympathies have to do with the characteristics of the moment; ultimately it is a question of maturity. edit: obviously, leftists have to make decisions in this one way or the other, and these decisions have consequences for the movements. my point is just that historical problems (and all mass movements are historical problems) are resolved objectively by elements which concentrate mass experience, or they are resolved by the enemy, and this process takes place from start to finish without being affected by what people want to see happen.

There is no plan for when the libs go back to brunch. None. The unspoken part of all this is that we didn't "care about our neighbors" when they were making poverty wages but they were serving us our treats and getting deported in less spectacular fashion. I come from org theory perspective, and think it's useful to identify the strengths and weakness of particular group structure. To clumsily borrow from biology - structure dictates function: the shape or composition of an object directly determines its purpose or capacity. In an ideal world you would have a mix of mitigation strategies . But that takes time to develop, which obviously isn't available to activists now. And no one movement is the same as another. It's fucking hard and big respect to everyone actually there. I can comment on theory, but that's easy for me to do since I'm not actually there.
