So, I've had repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) which involves sending magnetic pulses into the brain to stimulate nerve cells. And I'm incredibly grateful and lucky, it completely worked on my long-term clinical depression and I absolutely recommend it as a treatment. BUT it was one of the weirdest things I've ever experienced. Like, it's crazy to be completely sober and have you mood change so fast (over a few weeks). And "bad" side effects for me were minor (mostly fatigue followed by some insomnia). But I did feel like someone had gone up into my brain and rattled things around a bit. Not in an uncomfortable, but still surreal. And I came away thinking that, it's fantastic when a doctor who has good, curative intentions is using this thing, but people should be really fucking careful about messing with their brains. The shit you can do with magnets and brains is wild.

Feeling so vindicated about my feelings toward my neuroscientist ex-bf…….he was working on AI and it would bug me out to hear the claims that were being made among his fellow researchers. Thankfully a lot of them were majorly and egregiously hyping their shit up, which is something we really have to take into consideration. I can’t reveal how much I know about some of the people that trevor mentioned but…some of them are kind of capping. Not entirely lying but definitely overblowing their results and massaging their data to make shit seem insanely advanced and breakthrough. Today I had 2 passengers in my shuttle talking about what they do for a living. Older man said he works in Washington in cyber security, he's visiting his parents in the college town that I'm delivering these people to. Young woman is a PhD student in genetics. Old guy starts talking about how she must be having so many breakthroughs in her work because of ai and how he hears they're already making designer super soldier babies in China. The woman said they don't really use ai much here because of ethical complications/HIPPA rules. Old guy asks if she's used grok, he says it's the most fact based ai in the game. She hasn't used it, but she says she sometimes uses other ais, but you gotta be careful because they hallucinate a lot. I drop off the old guy, and out of curiosity, ask the woman what she uses ai for in her work. She says it's faster than googling for looking to see if there are any papers on a particular topic she needs to research. She then reads the papers herself, but sometimes it'll just invent a fake paper

I think about that too, I have no good answer. I think she’s just very invested into the online world, which gave her everything, like her career from a blogger to becoming a NYT writer. Online activism, friends, etc. It does remind me of when I was rude teenager in 2018, and told permanently online people on discord, that all their friends aren’t real friends, if they never met them once irl. They would in a similar way become defensive about the internet.

I genuinely think the last bit - about people living in their own meme worlds - illustrates the value of studying philosophy, because philosophy is able to account for the kinds of counter-intuitive, mystical insights that drive people crazy, while, at the same time, making those insights cohere with normal, everday reality. Most of these people seem like they just need to get into Plato, Kant and Marx, in some combination.
